HEAT shells can actually shatter without exploding IRL too. It's designed to explode once the fuse gets hit with enough force. But if you hit armor at a steep angle, it can cause the fuse to bend rather than to dent, causing the fuse to literally break and the round to shatter into a bazillion pieces.

My friend just wait until you get to the Leclerc and see how terrible it is compared to other 11.7 tanks. No armor to speak of at all.
