"Remember the French Revolution to which it was we who gave the name of 'Great.' The secrets of its preparation are well known to us for it was wholly the work of our hands. We were the first to cry among the masses of the people the words 'Liberty, Equality, Fraternity.' The stupid Gentile poll parrots flew down from all sides on to these baits, and with them carried away the well-being of the world. The would-be-wise men of the Gentiles were so stupid that they could not see that in nature there is no equality...." Protocols of Zion No. 7., No 1 "On the ruins of the natural and genealogical aristocracy of the gentile we have set up the aristocracy of our educated class headed by the aristocracy of money. The qualifications for this aristocracy we have established in wealth, which is dependent upon us...." Protocols of Zion No. 3

That's right. She probably didn't, and the clip doesn't say she did. This saying was *attributed* to her by the commoners. The importance of this sentence is in understanding how the people viewed the monarchy and specifically Marie Antoinette.

Very well done, unfortunately historically incorrect. The declaration of the rights of man was signed in 1789 after the march on Versailles. Which lead to the signing of the new constitution of 1791 which was based on the American Declaration of independence.

@harrylinnell9092
@harrylinnell9092 8 жыл бұрын
The revolution in Les Mis is actually from the 1820s, after all of this, when the royal family was reinstated after napoleon. However all of French history is very interesting, and there are a hell of a lot of revolutions to keep track of (the current French Republic is the fifth!)

SO inaccurate. The peasants weren't influenced by enlightenment ideas or the American revolution. There was a bad harvest for several years, and they were just hungry. The king wasn't a bad guy. He continually tried to reform France and its broken tax system, which was unable to handle the debt left by his predecessor Louse the IVX. The nobles, however, kept blocking the king's attempts. The popular view at the time was to have a constitutional monarchy, and the king's beheading was carried out by a group of extremist jacobins. Go to crash course for more accurate history.

Check out the history behind the Blue Libraries. Traveling salesmen who went through France and sold watered down Enlightenment texts. While you are correct, most of the lower classes would not have been influenced by the Enlightenment, some were. It was a factor in the start of the French Revolution.

Just one thing: the Independence day / 14/07 celebrations actually do not celebrate the Bastille day, but they commemorate the Fête de la Fédération, 14/07/1790, in which representents from the whole country gathered and the king declared he would support the newly formed People's Assembly. It felt like reconciliation was possible, and it was that date that was agreed upon in 1880 as a National Day for its symbol of hope and community rather than war.

The French Revolution brought greater ideas to the people, that all are created equal but unfortunately, due to the rise of an ideal very radical, led to the rise of the Bourgeois Capitalists, that lead the world and the economy later on, worsening economic depression, that eventually will lead not revolution, not war, not events but the annihilation of mankind, worst than the last, that we question ourselves, what does freedom mean?

You are right Ryan, but the script doesn't say that she did, rather: "Queen Marie Antoinette's *supposed* response upon learning that the poor peasants had no bread". This sentence which was attributed to her by the angry French public demonstrates their perception of the royal family and the queen in particular as spoiled and detached. That is why it is worth noting, even though she probably never actually said these words.
