I read some years back that as a percentage of GDP, Versailles was the equivalent of what the USA spends on an aircraft carrier. What time-range that was, I don't know - initial cost under Louis XIV, I suppose. You have to remember that France was by far the most populous, powerful and wealthy nation in Europe for most of Louis XIV's reign. The culture and language of France spread across Europe and the rest of the world - to the point where hundreds of years later we are watching virtual renderings of it on the internet, and then commenting on it. A strong argument could be made that Versailles made more money for France in terms of exports of goods (art, textiles, porcelain, etc.) and tourism than it cost, but we'll never know. Can you buy influence and advertising like that? Yes, but only if you are a decadent French monarch.

@@BlackRose85789 yeah well the story indeed is a bit more complicated, but basically Louis XIV thought that the king had to be transparent and hide nothing to his people (see the Fronde during his childhood). That and his will to decrease the power of these pain in the ass lords who he kept in this wonderful castle, close to him and in the finest luxuries ; all of this allowed him to strengthen the power of monarchy (not so much a dictatorship but the State). Louis XIV and Marie Thérèse had a normal royal marriage: arranged for the procreation of heirs and alliance of two countries. Yes, the Grand Trianon was built for Louis XIV as a retreat. But the Petit Trianon was built for his grandson Louis XV and will later be used exclusively by Queen Marie-Antoinette, wife of Louis XVI. On the grounds of Versailles Park, she had a hamlet built just near the Petit Trianon, called the Queen's Hamlet, a small rustic farm built like a Normandy farm and mainly designed for the royal children to get acquainted with farm animals. It has also a pond. The hamlet has been recently entirely restored. Vegetables are still cultivated on the property and given to charity soup kitchens. Worth seeing too.

The gardens were much more interesting and enjoyable, and they and the Trianons make a great day out. If you can't get too far out of Paris and the Loire Valley is out of range, I'd also suggest Vaux le Vicomte, where you get a real Versailles feel (for reasons I won't bore you with here), or Chantilly.

Unlike in our hot lands structures do not degenerate over time. Such royal places of Europe are pleasant to view. The mighty French revolution overturned everything and appears to have modernized the medieval minded society in France and also sent most powerful blasts of freedom, equality and fraternity to all the then existing western world and later to all awakened eastern societies and other regions of the world..

Nobody: Really nobody: Me: What happened to the fountain on that terrace when the terrace was replaced with the Hall of mirrors? 🤔
