Version française : • Versailles, de Louis X...
🌍 How did Versailles look like before Louis XIV? How did the small hunting lodge of Louis XIII become the largest Palace in Europe? What embellishments did the young Sun King want in his Palace of festivities and amusements? Did you know that the Hall of Mirrors was originally a terrace overlooking the gardens?

I read some years back that as a percentage of GDP, Versailles was the equivalent of what the USA spends on an aircraft carrier. What time-range that was, I don't know - initial cost under Louis XIV, I suppose. You have to remember that France was by far the most populous, powerful and wealthy nation in Europe for most of Louis XIV's reign. The culture and language of France spread across Europe and the rest of the world - to the point where hundreds of years later we are watching virtual renderings of it on the internet, and then commenting on it. A strong argument could be made that Versailles made more money for France in terms of exports of goods (art, textiles, porcelain, etc.) and tourism than it cost, but we'll never know. Can you buy influence and advertising like that? Yes, but only if you are a decadent French monarch.

@Gappie Al Kebabi Yes. In fact he did. And believe it or not, but people would be ordered to follow him around so much that they even had to watch him take a shit. Talk about no privacy. I don't know about the bedroom. But he was paranoid beyond belief about losing his power that it gave his servants closest to him, no time to plot or even find time to meet anyone to plot against him.Literally he knew when you first woke up, who you fucked, who you fucked before you married, and got fucked by when become his servant to the state. It's not like he wasn't smart and wise to keep watch over his general and stuff, but really? You couldn't find one......not even one pitiful loyal soul to spy for you and report back? Even Cleopatra was able to manipulate the people and state without losing some of her dignity in the process.

@@BlackRose85789 yeah well the story indeed is a bit more complicated, but basically Louis XIV thought that the king had to be transparent and hide nothing to his people (see the Fronde during his childhood). That and his will to decrease the power of these pain in the ass lords who he kept in this wonderful castle, close to him and in the finest luxuries ; all of this allowed him to strengthen the power of monarchy (not so much a dictatorship but the State). He built the modern French State and administration and left it stronger than ever. Versailles was a mean to this end, and also the demonstration of both the strength and the genius of French people and its king.

@@MauricioRomanov , many of your “facts” ( especially the names) are mixed up. @DiamondCalibre, by “falling apart”, what do you mean? Louis XIV and Marie Thérèse had a normal royal marriage: arranged for the procreation of heirs and alliance of two countries. The queen never really learned to adopt French customs or even learn the language fluently, and was a very dull person, so it isn’t as if she was ever going to be Louis’ ideal or equal. Still, she never did anything to cause scandal, she was treated well and with great respect, and Louis never flaunted his mistresses in front of her. Likewise, she never demanded he give up his mistresses or gave him a bad attitude.

Yes, the Grand Trianon was built for Louis XIV as a retreat. But the Petit Trianon was built for his grandson Louis XV and will later be used exclusively by Queen Marie-Antoinette, wife of Louis XVI. On the grounds of Versailles Park, she had a hamlet built just near the Petit Trianon, called the Queen's Hamlet, a small rustic farm built like a Normandy farm and mainly designed for the royal children to get acquainted with farm animals. It has also a pond. The hamlet has been recently entirely restored. Vegetables are still cultivated on the property and given to charity soup kitchens. Worth seeing too.

My favorite palace built by my most favorite Absolute Monarch, Louis The Great! I have learned so many interesting things about his court and the country, and the ways of its people lately and I have to say, that if I could go back in any time, and be with any one from that time, I'd go back to 1660's with louis ruling and building Versailles!

If you're planning to visit France and see some history, spare yourself the dreadful never-ending tourist queue that is the visit of the chateau de Versailles, ang go visit the castels on the Loire river.

Having been through Versailles and many of the Chateaux of the Loire, I have to agree. Versailles is crowded, noisy and very much like a series of stage sets - which I suppose it was, really. The gardens were much more interesting and enjoyable, and they and the Trianons make a great day out. If you can't get too far out of Paris and the Loire Valley is out of range, I'd also suggest Vaux le Vicomte, where you get a real Versailles feel (for reasons I won't bore you with here), or Chantilly.

Versailles castle park is bigger than Manhattan ... The gardens at Versailles has 55 historic fountains, of which up to 32 currently plays during the musical fountains show. Louis the XIV had to pump the water mechanically. ... The king of Denmark observed, in what was probably an understatement, that the water pumped to the fountains cost as much as wine. Water for Versailles was taken from the Seine, raised, and distributed by high stone aqueducts and pipes

J Lord Yeah the king was very unpopular but I think is wrong to say that the nobles caused the revolution it was a burgher revolution and you can see that since the rights granted afterward were all about freedoms and imply a passive posture from the state rather than an active one no to mention it was the third estate the one that started the revolt
@JD-ey9gw
@JD-ey9gw 5 жыл бұрын
J Lord that’s very through and the fact that they were not taxed and used their power to remain that certainly contributed to the flames but to say that they used their power to cause the whole thing is incorrect, and certainly the cost of the wars waged by his predecessors needs to be factor in
@JD-ey9gw

J Lord yeah well I think for the revolution to happen you need such a weak king and indeed there was a very weak one I don’t think he was evil per se but rather very incompetent and unpopular not to mention the rumors that his wife was the one in charge

It' bizarre how they can make such a palace with such intricacy when they had no computers and no advanced machines , while modern day houses are literally just pieces of squares.
