I'm waiting for FNF's full release after its successful crowd funding campaign. I have respect for the first couple of mods like Tricky and Static and the original songs, however everything I liked got ruined by fans. The original game, intended to have dirty origins, was polished for preschoolers. Mods stirred more drama, tumblr OCs, more mods for kid gaming trends than anything worth playing, and rhythm game tryhards than fun. Newgrounds became a host for the FNF fandom rather than a revival. And streamers highlighted and catalysed all these problems. If you want to still enjoy this game, ignore the "fan"dom.

the saddest part about fnf's fan base is easily how it was literally never meant for kids in the first place. You have bright expressive cartoon characters and slightly edgy situations and scenarios; it attracts this kind of fanbase. You see it all the time with stuff like FNAF and sonic; it acts as a gateway to explore these darker themes and ideas while still having a cutesy "safe" base in the form of cartoon characters. You would have to be severly sheltered to just never come across this stuff at this point. What's changed nowadays is that Discord, being an unregulated chatting tool, makes it easy to kids who don't know any better to come across and interact with people that don't have the best intentions in mind, and harder still to keep records of.

My fandom interests are from the old media: DC Comics, Star Trek, and Doctor Who and you can still dip a toe into those and come away relatively unscathed. Fans there can still be fans of those things and not make them the center of their identity. That doesn't mean there aren't still weirdos though but they're easy to avoid. Sports fandoms are the least strange of all. The MMA fandom is probably the least toxic of all; probably because we're watching even the people we don't like getting kicked in the face. I remember joining this fandom once it was still starting out and it was relatively small at the time. I'm still stunned at how dangerously chaotic it has grown. Five chapters worth of so much drama covered all in one video, jesus that isn't even the half of it once you open up the can of worms that is the Sonic.EXE mod. I try my hardest to look on the positive side of the fandom through focusing on the coolest mods releasing. But man, I'd be lying if I said these situations don't bring my faith in the fandom down. I just wish people are able to never repeat this degeneracy so that we can go hack to making mods on whatever we liked and be chill. It's getting exhausting to see this game get bombarded by negativity because of these kinds of rotten apples that are almost everywhere in the community. Fandoms are really toxic, and also mostly lurking with degenerates, creeps and weirdos. When FnF started to blow up, I was like "hey, this game kinda dope and also a tribute to the NG community of which I used to play several games on there when I was younger", played trough the game, downloaded some mods, watched some youtubers play popular mods at that time and then after 4 months I generally forgot about it since I saw it for what it was developed as initially. Over these years I did hear of certain dramas going on but never bothered to look deeper since I never partake in actively participating in fandoms or online communities in general. And god damn did the community twist this game harder than an alligator with its prey. Since I'm also part of gen z ( 19 years old ), I'm honestly concerned what these kids may be exposed to on the internet ( yes, I also did see some shit on the internet as a kid with unsupervised internet access, but at least I wasn't groomed or taken advantage of since I knew from that age that you never know who's truly on the other side of the screen ) in these days, especially on social media. I literally feel more like a boomer by the day, it makes me think what will happen with the newer generations in this increasingly rapidly changing virtual space, since there's so much shit going on at the same time that you can't be bothered to see it all. Also for those that plan to have kids in the future, please always be careful and monitor what your child is doing on the internet, and when he gets old enough make sure to teach him how to easily identify attempts of grooming and exploiting ( and the consequences of them ) on the internet and to never share critical personal information, like his full name and/or adress to potential weirdos and creeps online.

As someone who plays a lot of fnf with severe epilepsy myself, first time I heard about the really happy thing and what happened im like “It can’t be that bad yea?” I had a friend hop on call with me, of whom I don’t speak to anymore, and I had to actively look away from the screen or I would in fact have a seizure right in my chair at that moment. Looking for the creator and seeing that community post was disgusting. He seemed to not even know or care about the serious issues that came with such a thing and instead of trying to fix it, actively dug a deeper grave by making it worse. It genuinely made me lose hope in some of the mods being produced for fnf, and just showed how bad people can really be if they don’t know what they’re doing.

As someone who was genuienly invested in the development of FNF and got to whitness most of these incidents as they happened in real time, watching this video was just depressing. FNF went from a chill community to a toxic and pedo infested hellhole within like 2 months. I despise the community for all the awful things they have done and continue to do, but even then, just seeing this was just as soul crushing as it was hilarious (for some parts). The fanbase started growing up a little bit I think and as newer stuff came out, the kiddies migrated to that instead although an impression was left on the franchise ever since then that the games should appeal to children for some reason (despite the dark premise) so that's ruined it a little bit in my eyes. The thing about these fanbases (coming from personal experience(regrettably)), is that they usually are made up of outsiders or people who struggle socially and often times, that means young teens and preteens who don't fit in or don't know who they are yet. These people latch onto things that they enjoy and have growing communities so they can fit in and be part of a larger space that they can interact with and meet people that share the interest. The issue is that if they can't find anything like that IRL then they become obsessive about it and since they don't have much of an identity yet, they start basing their identity on that community and interest. Criticism on that thing become attacks on them as a person, they become sheltered and sensitive and it's just a slippery slope. Many grow up and out of that mentality and if they choose to stay a part of that community or interest then it just becomes a thing that they like rather than a personality-defining trait. FNF's community is in that same boat right now. A couple years time it may change.
