@Starburstnova2 ай бұрын
@@aazhie This is a big part of why I love this game so much. It makes more logical sense for Mae to hang out with Gregg, rather than awkwardly trying to rekindle an old friendship. But Mae and Gregg are bad influences on each other (Mae encourages him to slack off and commit crimes, jeopardizing his plan to leave Possum Springs), and Mae and Bea are good influences on each other (Bea helps Mae grow up, and Mae helps Bea have a little more empathy and gets her to relax and not have such a pessimistic view about everything), which is part of what motivates you to choose Bea for hangouts instead. I love both their routes, but I find Bea's much more satisfying for that reason. I kind of wish you could do Gregg's hangouts THEN Bea's all in the same playthrough...maybe not all at once, but it feels like the most natural progression would be for Mae to mostly hang out with Gregg then once the Donut Wolf hangout happens and they realize they both kind of need to grow up a bit, Mae could start trying to bond more with Bea.
@bipolaron2149 Жыл бұрын
A surprisingly common take I've seen is that Mae coming back screws up Bea's life and ... I genuinely don't know where people get that from? At the start of the game, Bea isn't just unhappy with her life, she thinks she's doomed to be unhappy forever and consequently can't bring herself to try and change anything. As disastrous as the Jackie party winds up being, if you decide to hang out with Gregg that day instead, Bea just ... doesn't go. She loses her nerve and stays home. Which to me at least is infinitely sadder. Bea is TWENTY YEARS OLD and she truly believes her life is already over. Mae can be impulsive and inconsiderate, but she gets Bea to consider the possibility of a future where things get better. I think that's where the "Best Available Friends" thing comes from. They're not the best POSSIBLE friends - they get on each others nerves, they fight, they frustrate each other - but they're also good for each other in a way no one else in town is.
@owlbatross9187 Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the awesome comment! I've heard that take as well and I'm right there with you, I don't know where people get that from either. Your point about the party is a great one, I was unaware that she didn't go at all if Mae doesn't go with her! Great catch! Losing her nerve and staying home instead of going, even though it doesn't turn out the way she hoped, is definitely sadder! Very well said about them being the Best Available Friends! Sometimes, especially in a place like Possum Springs, a friend like that is what you need the most.

I hung out with Bea the first time I played the game. I actually didn't like Gregg all that much but I've since warmed up to him too. Mae and Gregg are amazing friends but they're extremely bad for one another and bring out the worst in each other. I was especially angry with Gregg during the last hang out when he more or less blamed Mae for almost destroying his relationship with Angus and making him go off track ("Mae, you have to let me change") when doing crimes, smashing lightbulbs and stealing things was his idea, not Mae's. Gregg seems like he can't take responsibility and I personally have only the worst experiences with people like that. I guess he triggered me in a way.
@owlbatross9187 Жыл бұрын
I totally understand where you're coming from! Given that you've had personal experiences with people like Gregg, it makes sense that you'd have that reaction to him. You're not alone in feeling that way either - over on my Gregg video, I've had other folks say similar things about him. It's a point that I hadn't really considered, so it's good to see a different point of view on the Gregg VS Bea dynamic. Even before I started making these videos, I felt pretty strongly that the Bea route was where Mae grows the most, and the more I dive into the topic, the more confident I feel about that.
@aazhie Жыл бұрын
Gregg feels like he is damaged in his own way for sure. While Mae is nihlistic and scared of it, Gregg seems to have a slightly healthier nihlistic view. But that kind of viewpoint can still be scary when it isn't balanced by thoughtfulness! Angus and Gregg are really good at balancing out each other, where Gregg is perpetual motion and Angus is the anchor that keeps him slower, so he isn't destructive.

So, I had a little bit different of an interpretation of the whole thing with Mae not remembering that Beas mom died. I think its not that she forgot, it's that she didn't really know. If Bea and her drifted apart after middle school, then maybe they were in different social circles during much of high school. And maybe her mom got cancer and died after Mae had her whole killer episode, so Mae being in recovery from that could have made her less aware of what was going on outside her more immediate friend group. Just an additional thought.
@owlbatross918711 ай бұрын
That's definitely possible! Mae very well could've been caught up with everything going on in her own life, and anything that might've come about as a result of the Killer Incident, to the point where she really just didn't hear about what happened. Mae's also fairly easy to distract, which makes all of this even more plausible lol.

i actually haven't yet played through gregg's route in all my years of loving this game because because i feel like mae and bea need the time together more than mae and gregg do. the only mae and gregg hangout i pick consistently is their woods knife fight outing because it feels like a "mae's and gregg's greatest hits" all rolled up into one event with some touching dialogue at the end (it also has my favorite track, "cycles"). it reminds me of the times when my own best friend comes back to town from school and we go out and catch up, reminiscing about the past while looking forward towards the future, even though we're on different paths in life now. bea's route feels like a painful but necessary growth for the both of them. gregg's just feels like he and mae are enabling each other to recapture the destructive chaos of their youth, and it makes me kinda sad :(
@owlbatross9187 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the awesome comment! You raise some really great points. The knife fight outing is definitely a bit of a "Gregg and Mae's greatest hits" type thing, that's such a great way to describe it! As you said, Bea's path is full of painful, but necessary growth, and I really do feel like both of them benefit tremendously from spending that time together over the course of the game. Bea's monologue before the final about Mae being like a sister to her really drives that home for me

I mainly focused on Bea’s hangouts and her overall route in the story and it was pretty damn sad & heavy, ESPECIALLY the talk after the party you mentioned. I can honestly see & understand why a lot of people canonize Mae’s hangouts with Bea as the true storyline, because Mae and Bea go through growth together, re-bonding their friendship into better levels. So once you beat the game, you’re like “wow! I just did all of that, I helped my friend and she helped me!” Truly felt rewarding. In both of my playthroughs of NitW, I mix n matched the hangouts. The first time, I went with Bea-Bea-Gregg, and that kinda feels like the best possible combo, because Mae is mostly a helpful chaos gremlin right up until her disaster at Bea's final hangout. The second playthrough, I did the inverse, Gregg-Gregg-Bea, and I call that the "Mae Ruins Everything" run. Cause relationship strain with the guys by enabling Gregg's worst impulses! Hang out with Bea once and get into a heated argument about her life! It really felt like seeing Mae at her most... I dunno, unstable, compared to the first route I took. The two routes feel like opposites. With Bea, Mae is the impulsive, wacky one, who both brings some light into Bea's bleak life and is gradually being pushed to be more responsible for herself. With Gregg, Mae is more or less an anchor on his own development as a person, simply by being down to go back to their old ways. Similarly, how the person you don't hang out with develops is markedly different to me; Gregg seems largely fine if you hang out with Bea more, because he has Angus as a companion, but if you hang out with Gregg more, Bea has nobody. Her isolated despair gets bad enough that, by the end of the game, Bea mentions she's getting the same Black Goat-caused astral dreams that Mae was through the game.
@owlbatross9187 Жыл бұрын
Well said, thank you for the awesome comment! I like the idea behind both of those paths! I definitely agree that your two routes are peak chaos gremlin for Mae! The two routes definitely feel like opposites! That was something that really stood out to me when I replayed the game to get footage for my videos, along with what you said about Gregg being fine if you hang out with Bea, but Bea struggling if you don't spend time with her. Our sweet boy greg is a comrade. He understands the animal nature and rejection of autheoity that is mae intrinsically- but neither sre able to grasp what to do with their energy in effective ways. Theyre both tough and sturdy physically but are truly psychologically lost. Greg has angus, whos calm- very philosophical guide allows both of them to move forward towards a very hard goal. Bea, in this analogy, is a peer who's comradery you earn through blood. She challenges Mae's views and has a more principled-rigid view of their situation. When the two work together and have these talks (always in good faith) bea's view is softened and mae's is put into clearer focus. They have very adult conversations where the conplex nature of their situations challenges both women to confront realities they's been ignoring. As mentioned in the video, both kinds of friendship are integral to rock solid friendships and i only wish we could bring the group even closer together and hang out as a unit more often.

Just found your videos, you don't know how long I've been waiting for someone to do a lengthy analysis of Night in the Woods (esp since it seems like the hbomberguy video on the topic isn't gonna manifest) First time I played Night in the Woods I took Bea's path, largely I think because of that blow-up in the car. Bea is quite abrasive, but Mae screwing up like that made me really wanna make it up to Bea, which of course Mae screws up again and again. But there are worse sins than Mae being a screwup. A lot of Bea's character is, ostensibly, "doing the responsible thing" but I actually think she allowed it to manifest toxicly inside of her. Even if it seems like Mae screwing up is 100% Mae's fault and She Should Just Stop... a large part of it is a problem because Bea *makes* it a problem. She is so rigid and so certain that she's got everything solved that Mae being an optimist at her seems like an insult. (I may be overstating; the fact that Bea sticks by Mae despite it all does mean that Bea considers that she may be acting unfairly) The Responsible Thing has made Bea's life a nightmare of drudgery and she knows it, which is why she's secretly looking for an escape despite the fact that she tells Mae that she can't escape. Mae's presence isn't just a matter of "Bea needs to learn how to loosen up!" in a flippant way like you might see a teen comedy do to a tightass nerd character. No, it's *critical to Bea's mental health* that she learn how to loosen up because she's clearly at a breaking point.

I don’t really like Gregg’s route because it always feels like Mae is a third wheel between him and Angus. They already happy together and Gregg knows many people to do crimes with. I feel like Bea is a one and only true friend who can actually affect on Mae and make her understand that actions has consequences

I’m sorry but I never liked Bea she blames Mae for things happening in her life if she was really her friend, she wouldn’t be toxic to her let me explain in the first encounter with Mae Bea says I see you’ve returned from college “ she says to her and Mae says to her yeah and she responds “and why is it your not still there “? throwing shade at her not once have they had a good encounter Bea constantly walls Mae out in the game over the fact she left so please explain to me why she’s your favorite character again

Hey there! Totally understand where you're coming from. Many of the things Bea says to Mae are pretty hurtful. I've spoken with a lot of people since I've posted this video who feel the same way you do. For a lot of folks, her comments are just too mean spirited for them to look past, and I definitely get that. I wouldn't say that Bea is my favorite - that distinction is reserved for Germ - but I do prefer her path over Gregg's because of the growth Mea undergoes by taking it. By hanging out with Bea, Mea is forced to face a lot of difficult truths and come to understand why Bea treats her the way she does initially. And by the end of, they've become really good friends. From a narrative perspective, I prefer playing through something like that opposed to the alternative.
