What a lovely man. It hit me when he said he was the life and soul of the party and then he'd go home a cry. I used to do the same and now haven't drunk for 4 years. Best decision ever.

Drinking is forbidden in Islam. Do you know how many crimes, murders, accidents, problems that happen because of drinking around the world? Too much! But guess what? It is forbidden for a muslim to drink but God promised it in paradise! Allah says in Quran [the English translation of the arabic meanings of Quran] : (The description of the Paradise promised to the righteous is that in it are rivers of fresh water, rivers of milk that never changes in taste, rivers of wine delicious to drink, and rivers of pure honey. There they will ˹also˺ have all kinds of fruit, and forgiveness from their Lord. ˹Can they be˺ like those who will stay in the Fire forever, left to drink boiling water that will tear apart their insides?) chapter 47, verse 15 And a fact that The wine of the hereafter is much better than the one of this world!

I quit drinking alcohol over 18 years ago at age 50 even though I'd been a regular drinker from the age of 18. I didn't quit because of the reasons that were mentioned in this video by these two brave people, i.e. I didn't have liver or any other medical problems and could take it or leave it and didn't have to drink every day. The real reason that I quit was because I used to suffer from horrendous hangovers and I used what I refer to as my own 'Mr Spock' form of quitting, i.e. logic - if I didn't drink alcohol in the first place then logic dictates that I wouldn't suffer from those same hangovers afterwards, would I? After all this time I can't even stand the smell of alcohol in any of its many forms never mind the taste and I avoid pubs at all costs and the same goes for any other venues where I know that alcohol's going to be served. The daftest thing about this is that between the ages of 18 and 45 I worked in several pubs and clubs both here in the U.K. and also in Canada and I could've attended those same places on my nights off and have a tab running where I could drink booze at greatly reduced prices to my heart's content if I wanted to. No matter which drinking establishment I worked in I never took advantage of that fact. Most of my drinking was usually restricted to the evenings and nights before my days off to give me ample time to recover on the day or days after when I didn't have to attend work. In my last job which was in an office I was expected to work on Sundays therefore boozing on a Saturday was strictly off limits because I had no desire to be at work the following day suffering from a hangover. Fridays were okay because our offices were closed on a Saturday therefore we could all go out and socialise that same evening and night without any problem. Even though I'm such a longstanding non-drinker of alcohol I've tried over the years not to moralise with others who like to drink and keep my opinions to myself on that subject. It's never plain sailing when it comes to this because I often get dirty looks from people whenever I venture into a pub merely to use their toilets if I need to - most of those same dirty looks come from the members of staff who work there....if by chance I happen to stay in any of them I make a point of sitting outside in their beer gardens if they have them but that doesn't stop any of their regular customers or staff from either giving me dirty looks or making snide comments. It's a no-win situation as far as I'm concerned therefore that's why I avoid pubs. As I'm a single man and have lived alone throughout most of my adult life I have no problems with any of these lockdowns, shutdowns, restrictions etc because I've been used to them for well over three decades - in fact the only significant difference between now and March 2020, i.e. since the start of the pandemic, has been that I only go out once a day to my local shop for essentials if I need them and if I don't then I stay at home. If this makes me sound antisocial or like I'm a hermit then that's completely untrue - like anybody else I enjoy company but as with most things in the U.K. there just seems to be one word missing from a lot of peoples' vocabularies and that word is 'moderation', isn't it? Drinking booze to excess just seems to be another example of people trying to compete with one another, doesn't it? I often remark to friends of mine - both drinkers and non-drinkers alike - that the real reasons that people drink to excess is because they're either a) drinking to remember, b) drinking to forget or c) drinking to lose all inhibitions and make complete tw@ts out of themselves and not being able to remember what they did the previous night.

The alcohol companies in this country are very powerful, I notice on the radio how its normalised everyday by the presenters laughing and joking about having a few or one too many, the media even subtly convinced a nation that Amy Winehouse overdosed on drugs instead of drinking herself to death. Governments view their citizenry as economic units. We consume and we create. We push it all around and, if they're lucky, some will fall off unnoticed. Alcohol is quite good, for governments, because it is a consumable and it is also a means of keeping us in the dark about the reality of our situation. I'm sorry about your brother. I hope you can find a way to save him in time. I wish there was one thing, that you could say to him, that would snap him out of his path to oblivion. Refreshing to hear someone vocalise why government is reluctant to even recognise the problem, never mind address it. The alcohol industry and the relevant bodies that represent them have far too much influence on policy, and far too little (self) regulation. Also, 4+ years sober. Not an example of how it should be done. Just evidence it can be done, and offer encouragement to find a way that works for the individual.

Alcohol is a massive earner for both Govt and wealthy share holders. The Govt has to spend tax payers money on treating the patients and chrine brought about by abuse of alcohol. Meanwhile the share holders laugh all the way to the bank. Not quite right is it somehow. The industry needs to act more responsibly and square up to its responsibility for the damage it does to society. Why should it be tax payers paying for the damage caused. The NHS and our police have enough to do already.

Think it's a good idea, but it won't help with its miss use. Every place in the world where alcohol is accessible or can be brewed, it's essentially miss used. There are so many reasons for doing so; an escape, feeling social acceptance, lowering inhibitions, just the buzz itself, a lubricant for a good party, even a lubricant for mating, etc. We are very insecure beings - and that's not about to change.

@TheRange, I'm in the enviable position of being completely teetotal and I never celebrate that Festive Fiasco, I'm neither a Christian nor a hypocrite therefore I see no point to celebrating it. As to your point about Christmas advertising - not just for booze but for everything else as well - unfortunately it's unavoidable between the end of October and all the way through tot the following New Year for all of us, isn't it? Fortunately for myself I don't own a television set because where I live I'm unable to receive any terrestrial channels as I don't have either a connected aerial or a satellite system so I can't receive any of their signals but I can still quite legally watch all programmes online without the added expense of having a television licence. Coincidentally I just renewed my status with TV Licensing earlier today so I don't have to fork out any money for the next two years for that unnecessary piece of paper. The beauty of my situation is that I can still watch all of the programmes that I want to watch them without the nuisance of advertising ( I mute all ads ) including those provided by Netflix, Britbox, All 4, ITV Player, My 5 because I have accounts with all of them. Funnily enough and despite the fact that I don't celebrate Christmas I just received an extra £10 bonus on top of my ordinary State Pension today. When I first retired over three years ago I was talking to a lady at the DWP and she told me about this Christmas Bonus thing of theirs and I told her that I didn't celebrate it and she said that "....it was so I could have a couple of drinks on them...." - I told her that I was completely teetotal and then told her that I'd probably buy a couple of large jars of coffee instead. We both had a good laugh about it.

One of my first drinking experiences at the (then legal) age of 18, was to get drunk on about a half of a fifth of Southern Comfort; I was nauseous and sick for nearly a week. I was so traumatized by it, that to this day, I have no desire to drink, and I am welcomed company and feel at home amongst Welsh Methodists and (American) Southern Baptists. I'm not going to be too sanctimonious about my abstemiousness however, as I had a weakness for Coca-Cola and drank nearly 12 cans a day for about 8 years; I made my dentist rich......

BC Liquor stores were allowed to sell booze in the early phase of Covid19. The medical system couldn’t cope with illness from alcohol withdrawals and Covid. AA and NA meetings were allowed to reopen in the later part of 2021 as the need for continuos peer support and help with staying off of booze and drugs. I was lucky to have a core group of 6 people who met out in the open on ranch land, public parks and personal property. We lost many addicted people during Covid19, their hopelessness and future questions about living safely with Covid19 were unanswered for a long time. It isn’t a surprise to see the total deaths around the world due to alcohol and drug addictions

As a sober alcoholic for more than 40 years in Alcoholics Anonymous I can assure you AA began holding Zoom meetings at the very start of the Pandemic. There are now members who have been sober via those meetings for more than two years. There are no dues of fees for AA membership and no one there is selling anything. If you want to drink, that's your business. If you want to quit, that's been the very successful business of AA for more than 80 years. Millions of people have been helped into sober and productive (and happy) lives because of it.

Should put on bottles big pictures of people dying of liver disease as they do with tobacco. Instead alcohol is publicised as a refined way of celebrating. Also the recovery model is not suitable mainly because it’s massively underfunded. Addiction is a response to trauma and suffering and detoxing is not enough. Stopping drinking is doable. Staying stopped is the real challenge.

People have some idea of alcoholism but usually think that as long as you are not in the gutter from it you are doing ok. People realize it is not healthy but don't realize what it does to a body, how quickly damage can be done at what amount of consumption, and the ultimate consequences. If people really knew the majority would not drink on a regular basis. That information which should be a part of regular education, is largely kept from people to support the industry and it also helps government subdue public rage.

Women need to be made aware of the dangers of drinking in pregnancy. Alcohol ( a toxin hence the word 'intoxicated') passes through the placenta and may cause a range of physical and neurological disabilities in the developing child. These lifelong disabilities are called Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) - the symptoms of which are ASD, ADHD, learning disabilities etc. There needs to be a public health campaign to highlight this issue.
