Interesting test! So I just came back from a week long intensive video production with multiple 30min interview takes throughout the day during a very hot summer week and I never had any overheating warnings. But I was also using an external recorder and never filmed 4k 60p. Only 4K DCI 25p 10-bit 4:2:2. But I have shot 6K for 25min with the camera being in the sun with 37° celcius temperature and there was also no issue. One time I even filmed a 1,5 hour long guided tour (in three takes) on a gimble without an external recorder (4K 25p) and no issues there as well. I think your results would have been very different if you would have either flipped the screen out or turned the LCD off. For me the X-S20 proved to be a camera capable of working in demanding situations if you treat it right (meaning you use an external recorder and turn off the LCD, turn the camera off when not needed and so on). So for me perosnally there is no overheating issue at all.

@captainspirou

Thanks. I wondered if there was a difference with an external recorder and that seems to be the case. A lot of the heat generating issues is probably from the processing necessary to save the video, which doesn’t happen if you just stream through the HDMI port. Equivalently if you configure the camera with live streaming (Twitch, Zoom) I also wonder how long it would last
@larrydiaz7156
@larrydiaz7156 Жыл бұрын
So you are saying you need to use a 400$ external recorder (600$ if you want to take advantage of the camera’s 6K open gate feature) in order to avoid overheating? Because mi X-T3 can record several 20 min, 4K@60 10-bit, 200mbps clips back to back for 80 mins before the battery died. No overheating at all. With an external recorder it could do ProRes 4K 4:2:2 10-bit without having to press record, so this hardly reads like a compliment. It’s absolutely outrageous that the camera meant to compete with the a6700 and provide next level content creation capabilities has worse thermal performance than a 6 year old camera.
@SamuelStreetlife
@SamuelStreetlife Жыл бұрын
@@larrydiaz7156 I never had any overheating warning so far with and without external recorders. And I shoot in 6K open gate and 4K 10-Bit 4:2:2 360mbps a lot. But that is my personal experience. You are comparing a tiny entry level camera body to a bigger camera with less demanding codecs. For people who want a small camera with pro specs, the X-S20 is a win.

Despite your test and statement about the Reddit forum, claiming that people are overreacting, this is a major issue for me. I've just bought this camera and was navigating the menu, taking about 20 photos when the heat warning occurred. I was at home in about 23°C. Your test was on a tripod, but when handheld, you can definitely feel that the camera is getting hot. For me, it is not acceptable that semi-professional equipment has such drawbacks. Many people with the same issue are also on the official Fuji forum. The support response was to invest in a dedicated cooling system or to set the camera in power saver battery mode... really? This is not a budget camera. I think that this issue is a game-changer regarding choosing different gear.

No problem whatsoever thereafter. 6.2K, 4K, HD 30/60/240p, all buttery smooth. All because of, may be, I shoot at max 20-25 secs in bursts. The camera is excellent I felt. The setting was on normal though... I have changed it to high and no overheating sign since then... but the camera gets warm pretty quickly and I fear that could become an issue, should it shut down at the wrong time... Recently I borrowed a friends XT5 as a second camera for an indoor air conditioned environment and the overheat results were very similar as yours. XT5 shut down many many times all day and I lost some of the shots. Was recording 4k 60p 422 Long gop. Couple weeks ago we were filming outside with XH2s and weather was 38C something. I was outside all day without any shade with same settings I wrote above. Never saw any warnings or anything like that. My back-up cam (X-T4) recently overheated at 16 minutes of 4K25p on a paid gig, inside about 26-7C. I used it on a tripod with the screen flipped out as 2nd angle, and I was like WTF? 16 min at 25p? It's a brand new body, temp setting set to high and utterly unreliable! I went for the X-T4 since it was on sale, has redundancy recording and in my budget, but now I do regret not getting the X-S20, as it seems more reliable.. I just ordered the 2nd version of the ulanzi fan, hoping I can prolong it to 25-30 minutes, as that is the longest period I'd ever shoot anyway with the B cam. The funny thing is, even after watching a sh#t ton of content on the X-T4, I don't recall people reporting the poor thermals.

I own this camera. The overheating of the camera depends very substantially on the ambient temperature AND air flow. The issue is how quickly the heat can be dissipated from the camera body. I found that the fan can make a massive difference, but again, it depends on the ambient temperature and air flow in your room. I shoot in 4K 60fps, and without the fan, the camera will overheat and shutdown in roughly 15 minutes. With the fan, it never shuts down and recording length is determined by the battery and memory card.

Thank you for letting us know, that’s worse performance than the X-T3, which can last up to 80 min without overheating while recording 4K@60. It makes absolutely no sense to me to have worse thermal performance, no matter how much certain users go out of their way to hide that fact: it’s not good performance. And It’s unacceptable for it to be so lacking compared to one of the brand’s very own camera from 6 years ago.

@@maikelsatya I don’t know.. we both live in different climates. Indonesia is hot and humid.. here in the algarve it just gets really hot and dry… and it was fine during my use..it seems like the people who are affected by this the most are the people living in and around Asia..some other people I talk to don’t have this problem. I’m Hoping fujifilm can address this in a firmware update.

May be late but I did tests on both the XS20 and the A6700, the A6700 overheats easier. In a room at 28 degrees C filming at 4K30 The sony overheated in 1hr 11min and the XS20 lasted until the battery dies at 2hr20min. I'm still deciding but leaning towards the SX20.

I have not the best or latest fujifilm x-t100 which released more than 5 year ago. Nothing at all. Never saw the overheating sign. Is that a standard for cameras for now? What should I do? I just bought it :(
