I remember the first time I read the Silmarillion and got to the part of Nar and Azog speaking at the gates of Moria and actually got a little creeped out by the depiction of the scene. Azog just standing in the darkness unseen like a disembodied voice threatening Nar and the Dwarves while Nar is standing over the decapitated body of his High King tossed just outside the gates to get Nar's attention. Azog probably was one of the best users of psychological warfare among the Orcs and Goblins in the stories and it was effective on the reader as well.

I really enjoy your new channel. Your voice is infinitely listenable and sounds more mature than others in this field. Perhaps it is a failing of mine, but having a mature voice reading Tolkien lends gravitas and experience to his work. Do you plan on discussing whether balrogs have wings?

Apart from being a raw material used in the manufacture of war equipment, what could lie behind Sauron's interest in Mithril and his desire to collect it?
@bobblack499610 ай бұрын
The fact that he is a smith by training. He does value beauty; in a rather warped sense of the word and he is Covetous of power; with mitheral representing the material power base of the dwarves at their pinnacle.
@TarMody10 ай бұрын
@@bobblack4996 Sauron is a pragmatist character. I don't think he would have any interest in something where he doesn't see any metaphysical benefit.
@Owlr4ider5 ай бұрын
Mithril was the most expensive mineral in middle earth. Basically the equivalent of gold throughout most of human history. These days there are materials even more valuable than gold but gold has been the symbol of wealth throughout history. Gold did exist in middle earth of course, but was less valuable than mithril which was only found in the misty mountains.
@billfred94112 ай бұрын
Its the best metal in existence so it shouldn't be a surprise someone like Sauron who is a smith would want it. Keep in mind a Mithril has been used in the creation of powerful artifacts including Galadriel's ring of power. Certain rare magical material can be turned into objects of world changing power if they fell into the wrong hands. This even ties into why it was so shocking to the elves when Galadriel gave Gimli some of her hair. An elf named Fëanor who is also a smith that makes some powerful artifacts asked for some of her hair and was refused because Galadriel knew he was just going to try and make an artifact out of it because it's rumored her hair holds the power of the two trees of Valinor. She freely gave it to Gimli because she knew Gimli's intention are pure and he was just going to turn it into a locket as a sign of peace and respect.

Why would Narvi and Celembrimbor call it Moria when it wasn't called Moria until much later, after Celembrimbor died during the War of Elves and Sauron?
@michaelnp23233 ай бұрын
Exactly. I always wondered about that. It is specifically mentioned that Moria was not the name given to Khazad Dum before after the desolation of the balrog. Moria meaning the black pit. Yet Celebrimbor and the dwarves applied the name at the height of Khazad Dum
@KSkrode2 ай бұрын
"Moria" originally referred only to the abyss at the bottom of Khazad-dûm, the Black Chasm, but once Durin's Bane was awoken and the dwarves lost the mine the entire place took on that name

Stuff in Moria is often some of the most "how did this detail fit?" in LotR. The Orcs looted the place, yet valuable items, like Durin's Axe, and Helmet, were just there, to be found. They discovered Balin's Tomb, but it hadn't been defaced, or desecrated. The book was there, and hadn't been lugged off for fuel. Moria was the greatest, and started by the First and Father, yet Durin, alone, had no wife. Who were the other Dwarves there? Eventually the two western Dwarven kingdoms fell, and their survivors came to Khazad-dum, but it was already big before that? What other Dwarves left their communities, and Clans, to journey to KD, and become Durin's Folk? It's mostly just me whining petty, but it still always left me with questions. I also wonder if any of the Gwaith i'Mirdain could have fled there, and taken shelter, after Celebimbor was slain, and later the Door was shut?

While BvS was obviously quite flawed, it was a film made by someone who knew what he wanted to do, but then the fans got so angry about certain parts of it that the Josstice League just ended up being this wet fart of a film made by committee
