First of all, can we all agree that you're crushing the thumbnail game?? Haha I love them all!!!! Also wow. What an absolutely incredible list of people to have known and worked with over the years, and collection of training experiences in different places. I'm dying to make it back to China once travel restrictions lift and would be elated to have even a fraction of similar experiences of my own! Cant wait for more stories!!!! (Including the one about how you got started in wushu, like you asked about in the beginning). Jiayou!!!

Actually, there are so many topics here that I'd love to hear more about - how you balanced your job with your training, your perspective on traditional influencing modern, and even just your experience making genuine friends in your not-native-language.... So much to know! Looking forward to more videos!!

THANK you! I actually did an analysis and watched a bunch of videos on how to make better thumbnails so I really appreciate you saying that. (You have awesome thumbnails too, btw.) And yes, I am very lucky to have had these experiences. Luckier than I deserve, I think. But also very appreciative that I could go through these things and be able to share them with all of you guys. I will definitely add the story of how I got started in wushu to the queue. :-) Thanks Rebecca!

@@RebeccaChinn I literally just added all of these ideas to my list. lol. The one about making genuine friends is a great topic. I have a slightly different take on guanxi that I think would be interesting to talk about. (Or maybe my take is totally not different at all since I may have a skewed perspective anyway. lol.) The job/training balance is something I used to get asked about all the time. I'm not sure if my experience with that is "normal", but I have thoughts on that too. Come to think of it -- I have no shortage of opinions. lol. Thanks for the suggestions. Keep 'em coming! It means I don't have to wonder what you all would like me to talk about. :-) Jiayou!

Haha ... well, it was during a time when I was putting out a LOT of long videos last month so I totally understand if it slipped under the radar. BTW, I really enjoyed your latest video. I wanted to watch it again and pay closer attention before I commented on it, but really nice work! I can't wait for the next one. :-)

@@WushuAdventures Thank you! Yes I guess some videos maybe are not select by the algorithm when we post too many? However again thanks for sharing, you have an amazing wushu experience. What I value the most is that your love for wushu hasn't fade, or even if it might had at some point, it's back! Which is something I love to see 🙏

Loved what you said at the end about the friendships youve made. I can firmly say that 90% of my friendships today were either forged by or adjacent to wushu.

Awesome, loving the new start on the channel, would love to see videos of your current skill and back then when you were in top shape!
@WushuAdventures
@WushuAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! My current "skill" is definitely super low. I mean, like ... SUPER low. hahaha. I was watching a video from last week's training earlier today and it was very cringy. I mean, I'm still walking with a cane right now, so my lack of mobility is to be expected, but still ... I don't have the range of motion to really be pulling off any decent-looking wushu. BUT ... I guess if I don't work on it I won't get any better, right? As for when I was in "top shape" (which honestly, was never that high either) you can see a lot of those here on the channel. Probably 2010 Xi'an training footage? I think that is the last time I posted up decent footage of myself. Actually, I admire that you put up videos of you working on your Kanji study through light novels and games on your channel. It takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there like that. I'm on my own Kanji journey as well working (or re-working since I restarted my list) through WaniKani. 漢字はちょっとめんどくさいですね。でも、まだ面白いです。lol. Ugh .. my Japanese needs work ... ANYway ... You will see some wushu stuff (barely) on tomorrow's video, and then I will be posting up the Week 2 recap video on Thursday. After that each Tuesday will be the weekly recap of my training so you will (HOPEFULLY) see some progress as time goes on. :-) Thank you so much for your comment. I really appreciate the support.

Didn't know you also learned Hung Gar! Thank you for pointing out that you've grown to appreciate the traditional aspects of Chinese martial arts, and how traditional training really feeds into the contemporary training, and enhances your ability to to modern Wushu much more effectively (there is a certain commentary here I feel that can be said about the way Wushu is being practiced and viewed by its own practitioners, and how it should be). Even though I'm also a Wushu guy and will never truly be a traditional Chinese martial artist, I've found that learning traditional has educated and enhanced my own Wushu practice, and I feel this is something that needs to be explored more for Wushu athletes. "There should be a good relationship between traditional and modern wushu. They should have more interchange. This could lengthen the competitive life of modern wushu. It could increase development and provide more room to grow. You need two legs to walk: one is modern wushu, one is traditional. You cannot give up one of them." -Zhao Changjun, Kung Fu Magazine "Where Wushu Went Wrong."

Thank you so much for the comment and insights! Yes, I studied Hung Gar very briefly, and a little bit of Wing Chun as well. After I realized the benefits to my Nan Quan in learning traditional southern styles I became more interested in exploring the movements and applications a bit more. But my understanding and experience with them is very rudimentary. I definitely wouldn't say I'm a practitioner of those styles. More of a tourist. lol. After the comment from Rebecca Chinn, and now you, I started putting together some notes on a future video talking about my thoughts on the whole traditional vs. modern thing. My views have definitely changed a lot since I started wushu back in the day. And hopefully they'll continue to evolve in the future too. I love that quote by (Xi'an's Number One Wushu Son) Zhao ChangJun. The part about equal legs reminds me of one by Baha'u'llah that talks about the equality of men and women: “The world of humanity is possessed of two wings: the male and the female. So long as these two wings are not equivalent in strength, the bird will not fly. Until womankind reaches the same degree as man, until she enjoys the same arena of activity, extraordinary attainment for humanity will not be realized; humanity cannot wing its way to heights of real attainment. When the two wings . . . become equivalent in strength, enjoying the same prerogatives, the flight of man will be exceedingly lofty and extraordinary.” Indeed, there needs to be equality and balance between the yin and yang of all things, whether they are men and women, traditional and modern, left and right (don't tell my za quan! lol), internal and external, etc. Thanks again for the great comment and thought-provoking insights. I really appreciate it. :-) Jiayou!

I always thought it fun how you didn't smoke in Shanghai, then we needed a taxi that day, so I lit up a smoke and one came belting around the corner. You were like "How did you do that?" Hahaha. Did you ever work it out?

Nope. I still don't know how you did it. But, I haven't really spent too much time pondering it either. lol. nice new vids from SSH you put yup. Did you get that from some Russian wushu friends? (I think I'm hearing Russian?) 1997 was such an interesting year -- very transitional from the old style to the new style. Great stuff! Thanks for posting it up. BTW, you came up in a conversation during the EWC in Stockholm. I was chatting with CDQ's wife about some of his students and your name came up. Hope all is well with you. I got to watch Kehan compete, which was fun since he was just a baby the last time I saw him. I imagine your kid is getting up there in years now too! Take care!
