Every time I see an opening ceremony for the Olympics with all the countries gathering together in goodwill, I wish that everyone on the planet could get along with each other every day like this.

Will not happen until dividing factors such as religion and the concept of "races" rather than just the human race, disappears. Until then there will always be "us" and "them", somewhere.

@Puro Admirable sentiments but I don't really agree. Having pride in your country, your religion or even your race is a good thing, (although I personally find it strange to have pride in your race). The problem is not respecting the affiliations and pride of others. I don't want some sort of homogenous, one world govt. type of world. Our differences are a good thing. What would the world be without such things as African American music? Blues, and jazz, and r&b, and rap? Or such simple things as Mexican food or Indian food? Think of all the beautiful Christian art and churches. The Sistine Chapel. The philosophy of Zen Buddhism has influenced millions in positive ways. The key thing is appreciating our differences or at least adopting a live and let live policy. Otherwise we are all just Communist ants.

Plus its just not realistic. People from disparate races and cultures often are quite different from each other. Have you ever met someone from a culture and race, maybe half a world away? The differences are often quite profound.

My dad and I camped with a tent during those games. The last night, before the 50km, we skipped the tent and used only our sleeping bags - in order to be closest to the race. That night it dropped to minus 33C, and guards woke us several times to check upon us. At 6am an endless line of people started moving through the woods. It's estimated that more than 100 000 spectators surrounded the track. The coldest weeks of my life, but still worth it. No question asked. 😊

As a norwegian it is really fun to watch this again. So many great memories, and some bad ones as well :) Weirdly enough, my two best memories isnt even norwegians winning. Its Vladimir Smirnov on 50 km cross country skiing and Dan Jansen on 1000 meters speed skates. Two really well deserved victories, and both athletes were rated very highly in Norway for their skills and personalities. Thanks for the upload.

penny miller one of the most heartbreaking sports tragedies of all time. But to be fair, when Greenspan shot this film, they had no way of knowing what would happen... there were so many great stories to focus on, and the GG story only became so historic after he died. Their first win was the most impactful, as far as Olympic History goes ...but maybe for us skating people, the second GG win has been more important, because it was a more beautiful skate & program.

I always thought they should have let the North Koreans host these things. They're good at marching in formation and singing grating songs there. Also, every time I see Harald speak in public I become more republican.
