I think the pink goo has more in common with "The Stuff", a horror movie from 1985 about a strange goo that is sold and becomes a favorite treat, it's addictive and turns those who eat it into "zombies" who only crave more of "the stuff". I'm sure the pink goo from the ABC article played a part, but the movie is the clear inspiration.

i think you're right for the most part but one point against this is that eating the paste has no negative effects (that includes being turned into a zombie :P). so my guess is its origins were "the stuff", pitched as "lets do something like the stuff!, okay but we can't turn the player into zombies, okay well there was that news article about pink slime) etc etc etc...where the finer details were pulled from the abc expose(pretend there's a fancy , above the e...). but that's just my guess... maybe its zombie turning powers were lost with time lol.
@toatahu20037 жыл бұрын
Well, you only get 21 pieces of pink slime, and the kids ate it for weeks without turning, so given that it may be addictive, it might turn people over the course of months of a diet solely of pink paste. Your character will never get any negative effects from it because you don't eat it for a long enough time. Kind of like how your character never gets cancer from all the radiation they absorb...

@J Lafo There's no need to be an arsehole about it, and if you'd bothered to pause and think before trying to sound like a smartarse you'd know that we were referring to the question of why all the Pink Ghouls were Adult Sized, in addition to the lack of Child Skeletons. The "Third Theory" I was talking about was that the ghouls in question weren't pre-war, but Wastelanders that arrived at the school in the years following the bombs being dropped, in addition, the school may not have been in session, due to it being rather early in the morning when the bombs dropped. Correct me if I'm wrong, but most school-based activities, sports and what have you, do tend to occur at times that are reasonably within school hours, despite taking place on the weekends, I could be wrong on this, but in my own experiences, this was the case. Again, there's no need to be rude, and you raised a somewhat valid point, even if it wasn't extremely well thought out.

@@jimmyriley2709 Brain damage plus the trauma of being a ghoul creates a Feral. It seems like aggressive ghouls seem to be more likely to go feral than passive ones, because becoming feral is a psychological thing. And as for the zombie thing, you’re right that they’re not undead. Their body doesn’t rot, it’s just that the radiation wrecke their skin and leaves exposed muscle and bone, and burns and chars their skin. It’s likely that ghouls who experience a larger dose of radiation in a short span of time are probably more likely to go feral, due to the trauma of it. The grinder INSIDE the facility made me suspicious, so I went back to some research I had done a few years back on what could have influenced the creation of the wendigo myth of Native American origin and found a couple things. 1. Human flesh apparently has addictive properties in its chemical constitution in similar levels to those of pain medications 2. The consumption of human flesh causes psychosis and increased hostility in those who eat it I also remembered that a study done to test food for astronauts looked into the concept of blending or liquefying the food into a shake or paste like texture. Meat treated in this way had very little identifiable flavor. In conclusion, the history of this charter school is much, much darker than many people would realize at a glance. My guess is that the government/vault tech was doing research on the effects of The consumption of human flesh as a possible food source in case of a nuclear fallout or other such apocalyptic event. I’m not saying that this is what really happened at this school, this is just my personal head-canon. but why else would there be a grinder/processing machine within school grounds.

The only problem with pink slime is that they never quite labeled it correctly. If a package of ground beef contains 70% pink slime, then fine. If another package of ground beef contains 5% pink slime but is more expensive, also fine. Instead, we were just given ground beef packages with no indication of what percentage is actual ground beef and what percentage is actually trimmings. I would've liked the freedom to choose between the two options and pay the higher price if it meant I got better beef. It's the same thing you would do for a better cut of steak.
@davidhuston4957 жыл бұрын
Horse Puncher, A better cut of steak makes sense as it depends on how tender or juicy the steak is. The intent of steak is to taste the beef. Ground beef is not the same. Considering this made the ground beef extra lean, I would not buy it, as I buy medium ground beef. I have no aversion to fat.
@SilverScaleMA6 жыл бұрын
That and some of the meat trimmings they used were of parts that by most were considered to be not fit for human consumption, basically meat that would usually be used for pet food only. It really didn't matter all that much though there have been some supporting evidence that because of the way pink slime is processed makes it very hard for you to digest it, meaning that it has very little actual nutritional value because your body can't use it efficiently. If there is just a bit of it as an additive in ground beef it doesn't matter but if it is mostly pink slime that it is not going to be as nutritionally effective as normal ground beef.

There is something that you forgot, very close to the university point you can find a group of three raiders dead, one has 5 food pastes with him, the other just regular stuff and the third one a note saying how the food paste affected his friend, and that he is acting very very bad and he has a very creepy look at his face and he afraid that he is going to kill him...

@chrisschoenthaler51847 жыл бұрын
Toxic Corn No, Oxhorn definitely mentioned that random encounter at least twice in this video.
@kamikaze000077 жыл бұрын
But also don't forget that raiders are also mostly chem addicts and are pretty much unstable people already due to said addiction. I can assume that since the paste increases endurance, their friend who chucked down the paste a lot became more resistant compared to them when he lost his mind to his chem addiction and was thus able to kill both of them 1-vs-2. Since the paste doesn't actually give negative stat bonuses like minus to intelligence, unlike what some chems actually do, this is the more likely deduction to what actually happened.
@burnout38907 жыл бұрын
I don't really follow your logic. You're implying that raiders "losing their minds" to their Chem addictions is a normal thing despite the thousands of raiders we've all encountered that have (fruitlessly) banded together to kill the player character. Sure, plenty of raiders are insane and plenty have been shown to betray their own, but the paste is clearly a factor in this case. Theres a definite difference between a negative stat bonus and an implied long-term health defect. A few examples of why your logic doesn't hold up: Drinking copious amounts of alcohol in the game simply applies a negative intelligence bonus, whereas in reality you would suffer severe liver damage or require a stomach pumping. Eating an irradiated animal carcass in the game simply lowers your max health, but in reality would do much more damage. Surely you don't think the devs are telling us that simply cooking irradiated iguana meat would completely sterilize it. Despite the paste not possessing any negative *stat* effects, the game devs clearly show that the paste has a negative affect on people. It did turn everyone pink (not healthy) and had a noticeable effect on the behavior (restlessness, aggressiveness) and health of the kids (who reported feeling ill). Yes, this is a pointless counterpoint to make, but who cares if I cared enough to make it.

My dad actually works with food processing and cold storage, the "pink slime" was a pretty good use of what was left after most beef processing but there was a chance it wasn't quite as nutritious as other types of lean meat but yeah, it wouldn't kill you or anything. Concerns over the use of ammonia are fair but this stuff was used for decades. Its like how people are freaking out over "meat glue" (transglutaminase) now. Its literally a protein that will stick two smaller cuts of meat together to make a bigger one that is hardly distinguishable from a standard larger piece of meat. Now I do think consumers should know what they are eating and not be cheated out of their money by being given smaller pieces of meat glued together to look like a bigger cut. But seriously, this stuff is a natural substance that can be used to do some really cool culinary things.

A week before the news broke with the pink slime, I had a hamburger at a non franchised restaurant near me. While eating said hamburger something like gristle, chewy but my teeth unable to break it down. This confused me as up to this point was under the understanding that ground beef was simply beef muscle and beef fat ground together in different percentage. I thought nothing of it til the story broke and I then posted a rewind of the restaurant. Because of this incident I now only have hamburgers upper end hamburger places. Gristle = Cartilage, especially when found as tough, inedible tissue in meat.

That's not a grinder in the paste machine intake, it's s a mixer. A powder mixer, I think. These are used to make things like drinks, using locally sourced water and concentrate powder. Seems likely that the pink goo came in boxes of powder, and was mixed with water to make the pink goo. That would make it much lighter and easier to transport.

How did you not see the terminal was not a mistake I believe the teacher Mr Smith was fired for raising questions and replaced with the Vault Teck sponsored teacher Mr Davidson That explains the names on the terminals, and the memo Aswell as the rest of the Vault Teck/government references If a teacher/staff caused a stur they were replaced by Vault Teck What better way is there to remove possible roadblocks and closely observe the experiment as it unfolds?

@Andrewnuva1993 жыл бұрын
A good theory but the terminal's account is still logged with the same name as that of letter writer, Mr. Smith. The only indication of Mr. Davidson is with the HUD indicator, more of an out-of-universe reference than in-universe. Nothing about the terminal's contents references Davidson. Furthermore, Smith's letter is only a draft, according to the terminal log. Smith never got a chance to send it, it seems. Based on the dates throughout the records left behind in the school, the paste program was rolled out the week before the Great War. Smith might've been drafting it Saturday morning when the sirens blared all over the Commonwealth, hence why it was never sent. That and the close timeframe means there might've not been much time for Vault-Tec to send out replacement staff in the school and get all facilities for them.

Actually, the real inspiration for this part of the game is based on the Walter E. Fernald School experiments of the late 40's ( and other such similar government based experiments on unwitting children ), in which students were given ( in this case ) radioactive milk with their school lunches. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_radiation_experiments#cite_note-pluto-4

It's not just because it was an experiment in a school that it is related, the ABC scandal is far more recent and stayed in peoples mind for a long period of time, also, fuck dude, it's a pink taste, that processed meat was also a pink paste, how could it not be the real inspiration? Like... how? How could "giving kids radioactive milk" be more relevant than "a scandal fully related to pink goo" in this case? HOW? ARE YOU DUMB?
@LikeAGodOfWar7 жыл бұрын
1. The Walter E. Fernald School was in Massachusetts. It's part of the states history and urban legends about it still circulate. It's as much a part of the state's past as the Salem Witch Trials or the Boston Tea Party. But you don't get tourism for that sort of history. 2. "Pink Slime" wasn't given to children through a government experiment, and there was nothing experimental about it when it was put into the ground beef to begin with. I'd say the "pink paste" aspect of it was thrown in more as a secondary gimmick for the sake of making it relevant than to say it was the actual inspiration. Also, there's no need for that kind of talk.
The first time I came to the school I remember the behemoth was weirdly quiet, so quiet in fact that when he threw a stone at me I thought I had tripped over a rock and died, then I came back and got slapped by his fire hydrant, so yeah, that was terrifying

Pretty sure that this has already been mentioned but the bigger issue was with how they sold it and didn't inform customers that the 'ground beef' was actually 70% liquefied beef trimmings, not cut beef then put into a grinder. Sure, it's not false advertising persay, but it's still a scummy business practice. There's also a higher risk of Mad Cow from the parts that are usually thrown into the blender (meat close to the spinal cord and head), and the ammonia and freezing aren't always a failsafe way to remove the prions that can cause the disease. Yeah, it was sensationalized to hell and back but it was still reported on because they deceived customers.

16:21 My theory on why there's vault-tec info here is simple : they knew flat out the vaults were going to span 10's of 100's of years and well, though it's not glorious you need to feed those people for the entire duration of the "experiments" so they were probably testing the concept of a food that could be created on site, recycled, and refed to people as it would probably be cheaper and faster then having hydroponic stations spread out unground - one of the teachers were probably a "overseer" taking note on the reactions of adolescent and adults to it

While pink slime might not have actually been as unhealthy as the media made it out to be, I'm pretty sure the food paste had some negative side effects, even if it doesn't hurt the player. The rise in children being sent to the office and the physical and mental health problems that the principal said were "psychosomatic" were likely not a symptom of the food paste's ingredients. It is more likely that the fact that the children and staff were forced to eat bland, oddly textured paste instead of anything else caused the behaviors that was referenced. That was probably Vault-Tec's scheme all along. Since they had to wait until nuclear war (something I'm convinced they had a hand in) to experiment on vault dwellers, they turned to another captive audience. The only real physical side effect from the paste is that your skin turns pink, just like eating too many carrots turns your skin yellow. This was an experiment to see how people reacted to having their food, which is something people generally like doing, turned into something objectively disgusting and then given no other option except to eat it. If the bombs hadn't dropped when they did, I expect it would have gone all "Lord of the Flies" in that school. Not that Vault-Tec would have cared, since they're sociopaths. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

I think the likely explanation for the paste's effect on the raider is that either the radiation did alter its chemical composition, despite not giving you rads when you eat it, or it may, as you suspected, take a large amount to cause undue effects. It's likely given the holotapes that the program was only instituted shortly before the bombs fell, and with having meals at home, the children and staff may not have been exposed to enough of the paste to cause noticeable issues.

Also I don't think those were mistakes at all. I think Vault-Tech or the government/both had someone working at the school that was there to supervise and make notes on the experiment, especially if what Seth P says is correct. It's possible they were experimenting with FEV to see what its effects would be as part of food perhaps. I think Vault-Tech wanted to have as many notes as possible. It's probable that the person referenced at the school was also a salesman trying to sell vault spaces to parents. As for the ghouls themselves it's a fairly easy to explain. It's probably people who were at the school or near it and took shelter there and stayed there as the world went to hell and got turned into ghouls from the radiation, kind of like the Necropolis.

I thought the pink paste to be a great idea as military/survival field rations. It's light weight, packed with nutrition, and even boosts your endurance.
@Shaun_Jones8 ай бұрын
Some modern military MREs do contain tubes of a nutrient paste, so you are right about that. But there are a few problems with them; the main one being that they are hard to stomach for long periods; people need a variety of textures in food to maintain morale (imagine trying to eat nothing but go-gurt for like three weeks, even if it provided all the nutrients you need you’d probably go nuts), which is why there are so many menu options for American MREs. Even the rations that do contain such pastes (primarily Chinese MREs) don’t have them as a primary component of the ration. The only exception is space food, but even then the paste was meant to be eaten only for a few days during the mission.
@D3ATHSPROPHET7 жыл бұрын
honestly it seems like it was going to replace MRE's for the military, but they wanted to test it in a safer environment than a warzone where possible side effects reduce efficiency. all in all it seems like a good one too, 50 hp and +1 END, my guess is before it could be considered a success the bombs dropped and this is all that remains of the paste.
@JadeDude19737 жыл бұрын
Interesting! A qualified success, yes. The behavioral side-effects would have reduced morale. Also, since Vault-Tec's real goal was to put 'mankind' on space ships once the Earth was uninhabitable... this paste was probably going to be the spacefarers' primary food source. Hmm, food for thought... >
@thehyperioncorporation84166 жыл бұрын
Jade Prout vault tec was probably just testing it and then working out the kinks later such as the behavior issues, I mean it is a school not many people would notice, and of course they added flavors so if they made these things it probably wouldn’t be so bad.

A couple of years ago, I left a pink set of t-60 in that school as a memorial gift to the students, faculty, and staff. And as a totem to ward off evil spirits that would seek to do harm to the spirits of the children who should inhabit that school. This set of T-60 was left in the principals office. Fast forward a couple of years, I was crawling looking for that Grognak the barbarian comic book, and I totally forgot about that set of T-60. I wound up jumping out of my skin. And it was at this moment, where I realized that I have successfully scared the living daylights out of my future self. 😂

Pink slime description sounds like what we in Croatia call "pašteta". Literally every piece of meat they would throw away gooified into a paste. The only difference is that it contains some fat. The word 'pašteta' is a combination of words 'pa' (well (like "oh well...")) and 'šteta' (waste (waste of resource)).Through a literal translation it would be just "a waste". We in Croatia it eat without disgust or concern, it's not funded by government either and it was proven to be fairly healthy (that means it isn't unhealthy not that it's super healthy)
