If you do it right you can get swan to try and run at you 'through' the gazebo by positioing yourself on the exact opposite side from him letting you stay away from his melee range and giving you cover to block his rock throw.

Honestly when you get the minigun conserve the ammo then use another gun to kill the deathclaw by hiding in one of the buildings, now that you have the minigun, find the statue next to the protectron then after you get its attention, go around in circles while shooting it. ( easy kill )

i had no idea swan existed until just recently in my sixth modded playthrough as an institute-escaped synth, which meant i had absolutely nothing, no armour or anything, and i was going through the valentine quest, stomped through the watery area to get their faster, and near shat myself meeting swan i died within seconds, tried a couple times more, kept getting murdered (those intense attacks make swan a damn cool boss, but also horrified me with no weapons or anything), and finally gave up and had to reload now whenever i go by there i stay at least fifty feet away from that cursed zone. fuck that shit. fuck you swan. some day i'll go back and beat swan, but that day is not today or any time soon, which makes swan the only boss in the game i actually feel caution ahout, and also probably the only ingame boss i feel is actually worthy of boss status

"Laid down mines". I had like 70 mines on one of my more explosive characters. I dropped them all at the entrance to the park and shot swan, then shot the mine when he got closer. My frame rate died, but swan landed somewhere near Salem.

I never noticed the warning signs on my first playtrough and just walked there all willy-nilly. Thanks to my (unhealthy) habit of spamming the V.A.T.S button to scan for enemies I picked up Svann from a pretty far distance. Not knowing what the hell it was, and judging by the big skull icon next to his name, I decided it to be best to just leave it alone. Fast forwards about 40 levels and I return to the common, and decide to shoot the trash pile for sh*ts and giggles with a handgun. The results were ugly.

I typically leave Swan alone, as imo he adds more depth to the world, and I pity his characters story. All in all I enjoy knowing that, though I could very well kill him, he defends his home; The Boston Commons from intruders. He doesn't bother anyone until they invade his pond.

The problem is mostly the shadow distance (besides poor optimisation), turn it to low. I get 60fps on 4k Ultra (except shadows) on my 980ti (at 1350mhz)

Doesn't matter if you have a high end card, it'll lag downtown because of bad game optimization caused by shadows and sometimes godrays. There are mods that control shadows dynamically, helping to lessen this issue. Other solution is setting shadows to low, which Oxhorn probably did, as the shadows look very faded in his game.

That Raider note you found explains an unexpected, yet hilarious, occurrence I experienced just a couple of days ago, in this very area. Instead of taking my usual route to the Commons, I decided to take the northernmost route that leads directly to it from Diamond City. Upon doing so, I noticed that _this_ route makes it way easier to sneak past Swan in early levels. When I rounded the corner at the street that leads to the Subway station, from the corner of my eye I spotted a lone Raider, cautiously trying sneaking his way across the park's interior. At first, I was going to attack him. As I feel it's my sworn duty as a decent person to hunt down & kill all the Raiders I come across. But then, I noticed the way he was moving. He wasn't just low to the ground, sneaking his way across the park, he was acting as though he was in combat with something. Hiding behind trees & debris, creeping with his gun at the ready, etc. Tracing his intended path with my weapon, I realized the dude was attempting to make a run on Swan! I thought to myself "Is this dumbass really doing what I *think* he's about to do?! Oh, this is gonna be good." Swan hadn't noticed the guy yet, and neither of them had noticed Me, so I targeted the Raider with VATS, just to get a feel for what he might've been armed with. He was wearing a harness, wore little armor to speak of, and was armed with nothing more than a Pipe Pistol. The Raider creeps closer. The mound of Swan Boat debris in the middle of the pond, slowly turns toward him. Out of nowhere, the Raider charges the pond, firing madly with his pistol. Swan pops up out of the water, screaming his own name. The Raider fires while falling back to a nearby tree, and uses it as cover. The Behemoth charges from the pond, hurling a huge rock at the Raider, which hits the Raider square in the face as he's peeking out from behind the tree, allowing Swan to close the distance. Once on top of him, Swan stomps the ground, shaking the Raider free from the cover provided by the tree. The Raider attempts to circle to Swan's right side. Swan brings down his anchor, stopping him in his tracks. The Raider, on his last legs by now, uses a Stimpak, but to no avail. Swan takes a final swing with his anchor, catching the Raider full on. And I lie to you not, when Swan hit the Raider with that last swing of his anchor, the Raider literally flew from where he was in the park, all the way to the goddamned Combat Zone. Hilarious.

Lamar Davis No, it's right up the street from the Commons. Depending on which way you enter the area, namely from the street where the little bus stop bench is on the corner, there's an intersection that leads to a Super Mutant encampment if you go straight ahead(you'll likely see a random Mutant walking back & forth on a ramp off in the distance), and the Combat Zone when you turn right. You'll know it, due to the Raiders hanging out on the scaffolding, who will attack you if they see you. Swan knocked that Raider from the park, past those guys, all the way to the Combat Zone.

My first encounter with Swan was definitely the most memorable. Without realizing at first what Swan really was (aside from being a huge Behemoth), I tried my best to defend myself from it. Completely forgetting about my perks in the heat of the battle, I accidentally activated my Pacify... which, to my biggest surprise, actually worked. After since then, I literally became best buddies with Swan and I needed no more companions for that playthrough. Meanwhile I used some mods already when I first met him, it was nothing that would be too much of a game changer aside from one specific mod: a companion framework that allowed more customization and option for companions. That allowed me to basically treat Swan as a regular companion. Heck, for a short period of time, he became the guardian of my settlement I was working on. Even though it wasn't my first playthrough, it was definitely a memorable one for sure.

Always thought the Swan was a Flowers for Algernon Easter egg. A Janitor is given a super serum that makes him grow smarter. Becomes so smart that he is even accepted into the research team experimenting on him. At the height of his brilliance, he is forced to face the horror of slowly degrading to even less than he was before. In the end, his newfound intellect serves only to magnify his comprehension and fear of his fate as he struggles in vain to resist it.

First time I killed Swan, I went in preety confident about my odds. I was wrong about my odds. Unable to fast travel away, I did the next best thing. I always assumed the note he wrote saying "YOU ARE SWANN" was his last ditch attempt to retain his humanity and sanity by reminding himself who he was/is with what little intelligence he had left but as he degenerated further because of the FEV he started living in the actual pond, like a swan, out of confusion over what the note meant as his mind deteriorated and he evolved into a behemoth. Probably waking up everyday on that mattress and seeing that note and thinking "I am Swann." before going about his day shambling around then questioning it and being confused by it more and more everyday.
