I don’t know if Marie was, in fact, his first IRL. However, in the show, it shows Marie as the first. When he says that he left all kinds of evidence around during his first rape, that was in reference to Marie’s case because yes, he did leave evidence. However, all the evidence went out the window when the detective (who IRL had only worked one or two rape cases prior) was told that Marie may have been making this all up. In the show, one of her foster parents meets with the detective in person, in IRL, it was a phone call. The following is from the actual Propublica and Marshall project report: O’Leary pleaded guilty to 28 counts of rape and associated felonies in Colorado. On Dec. 9, 2011, almost a year after his arrest, O’Leary was sentenced to 327½ years in prison for the Colorado attacks - the maximum allowed by law. He is currently housed in the Sterling Correctional Facility in the barren, remote northeastern corner of Colorado. He will never be released. In an interview with police after his conviction, O’Leary recounted his attacks in detail. He described the feeling after raping one elderly victim. “It was like I’d just eaten Thanksgiving dinner,” he said. He let spill some lessons for law enforcement. He boasted of the countermeasures he’d taken to avoid getting caught. He knew that the Army had a sample of his DNA. So he took steps to avoid leaving any traces of genetic material. He also realized police departments often did not communicate. So he deliberately committed each rape in a different jurisdiction. The five other attacks - one in Washington, four in Colorado - all came after the attack on Marie.

The state of Colorado had passed a law that basically would not allow anyone to sue for more than 250,000 dollars, isn't that convenient for them. Even in the event of wrongful death cases such as when Denver PD. Shot a Hispanic man because they saw something shinny in his hand, turned out he was holding a can of pop and the police had the wrong house. Another time Denver Police shot a Hispanic man after getting the wrong address. The man was frightened thinking a criminal was breaking in and retrieved his gun to defend himself ,evidence at the scene suggests the police shot through the front door. These two families were not compensated anywhere near what they should have received. If the police kill someone after going to the wrong address that's murder in my book that not only should victims of trigger happy cops get the millions they deserve but any frickin cop who kills an innocent man should be imprisoned with the other criminals. It suprises me not that cops would revictimize and add to the traumatic experience as a whole and try to turn around and charge the victim with a crime because there ignorant incompetent ass missed or ignored evidence and you know they just want to hand out as many criminal charges as they can regardless of innocence or guilt, they get raises and promotions and big bonuses for felony convictions. That they have only to gain by screwing you over ,justice can't exist in such a system. Mary should have been awarded at least 4 million dollars and I still think they need to pay it after what those MF's did except now with added interest and penalties same as if you owed them. Then the officers involved and the prosecuting DA and the judge should be stripped of the judicial immunity they so cowardly hide behind and sent to prison and not the Martha Stewart kind of prison either I mean hard time where they can feel first hand what it's like to get fucked.

Guy was 15 years old when a woman was found 150 feet away from the footprints tim left on his way to the school bus .150 ft.away . Tim thought it was a maniquen. There were foot prints found close to the body that didn't match Tim's and what they called mutilation was actually a surgical procedure namely a female circumcision, like a 15 year old is gonna pull that off. They immediately suspected tim and found zero evidence, they even tore the plumbing out of his house looking for blood. They found none. After school he went into the navy ,they said he was trying to run and arrested him. Tim spent 10 years in prison before the innocence project found evidence in the possession of detective Broaddrick and Jolene Blair and discovered both of them perjured themselves at least ten times each. The real suspect turned out to be an eye surgeon who still had the shoes that made the tracks found close to the victim. He knew they were closing in on him and he committed suicide. Tim masters was given ten million dollars however if you asked him he'd tell you he would rather have the ten years of his life back.

The camp blamed me, didn’t call authorities, tried to suggest I was displaying signs of parental abuse as a reason for not telling my parents until 3 days later. I didn’t even understand what had happened to me. This was the late 90s. I don’t remember preteens talking or being taught this shit. 21 years later I’ve begun talking about it. Last week was the first time I broke through the dissociation and reacted to what happened, well up to what happened. I cried for a good minute. So much work to do in therapy. I wonder what the other kid is doing. I wonder if he even remembers. I think about confronting the camp. But idk. I’m just very vulnerable at this stage. Just wanted to share anonymously. I'm a woman and think you're a wonderful human being, because you are not now resorting to hating women as some men do, turning it all into a war of the sexes, resenting women for the fact that male victims of abuse are dismissed and not believed. As if women universally sought some sort of status through victimhood and wished to paint all men as despicable... It should never be about Men vs. Women, as it so often is, but about fighting abuse in every form, without agendas or pre-conceived ideas. The most Unbelievable part is how many women, from across the Western world, are here in these comments, affirming that this same situation happens all.the.time. From the times you reported crimes and they weren't prosecuted, to the crimes you didn't commit, that were prosecuted. This series is important, and we should be showing it in high schools and having sex separated discussions about it, with FBI agents in with the boys, to start screening the sociopaths. That's how important and widespread this issue is. The moral isn't be on guard at all times, ladies, it's that law enforcement should be preventing men from raping, from a young age.
@iuhgongiorkjh28233 жыл бұрын
Theres a lot of ableism in this. You're demonizing mental illness and equating violence to something people cant control. In fact, mentally ill people like those with aspd are more likely to be victims of these crimes than commit them. Also, rape is not a gendered issue. Its very bioessentialist and reductive of male victims and victims of women rapists to say only boys rape. So let's have more education sure. This show did right in many ways. But lets not go about it like this.

I don’t know about anyone else, but ask me what any of my family members wore today, I’d have no clue. You’re mind doesn’t focus on minor details and it’s hard to recall hours after. Not to mention, when trauma occurs, it isn’t unusual that under that enormous stress your memory becomes worse. And people be nitpicking stuff like that, so dumb. Also as someone who doesn’t usually have normal reactions to things - what happened to her is my biggest fear. Usually I fake my personality around people because of how unnatural my reaction is to things and a lot of it has to do with the fact that I went through a lot growing up. Had a picture from the night it happened too.... my face was screwed up from the drug (I was clearly messed up) but because it was 2 months later they said they couldn’t do anything. Everyone blamed me for not saying something sooner and for “putting myself” in that situation. The entire case was dismissed as if it never happened.

This series was so harrowing and truely devastating but it’s remains one of my favourite series. You could feel the effort the actors, crew and writers out in to making this story genuine and doing the real story justice. So so incredible ❤️

I watched this show m it broke my heart.. watching this video got back those feelings.. can’t imagine wat they would have gone thru.. unimaginable and so painful and traumatic. The one who played Marie was so bang on. She literally put life into the character.

I jjsy finished watching this, and the last 5 minutes I just cried of happiness and felt so much and a deep sense of justice and energy surging through my body ! This show is phenomenal and I recommend everybody watch. It is a must see. And it wasn’t too much for me to watch as a highly sensitive and traumatised person, I am very selective about what I watch and listen to as I can easily develop extra anxieties, I don’t even watch the news or any scary high adrenaline movies. But this was slow and steady, and fine for me to watch. A must see !!!!

Imagine that this woman only got 150k after being RAPED and ACCUSED of false report, she was humiliated publicly and lost everything. And the guy that got hit by a door in a cruise ship got 21 million dollars 😅. WTF ???

I watch that entire series of unbelievable on Netflix and the cop. The people they were doing investigation examiner all of them was so stupid and that exactly how people deal with people in real life and I can’t believe this is actually a true story.😮 I feel so bad for her. I kind of wish they would’ve prolong the seasons in the episodes you know we only got one season few episodes.😮

One of the best series on Netflix, I almost cried for the older lady and I suspect Marie was the first victim, if they wouldnt have deleted her file they could have been caught the guy. Every single on of those 30 women should sue whoever they can. We need more detectives like those 2 women and their team. This docuseries made me really appreciate the work that some cops do, it's also made me appreciate all the women who come forward even more than I already do, it's people like Lilly and I cant remember the other victim, who help keep rapist off the street, I wish they didn't have to suffer but again as a woman it is appreciated when victims say I have to make sure this doesn't happen again, few of us would fault a rape victim for not wanting to relive that trauma but they do it anyway.

Its horrible to know that when a normal citizen does something bad/breaks the law they'll get severely punished for it but when a cop make a victim believe shes lying about a rape nothing happens, or when they shoot and innocent person, or put them in jail for no reason the list goes on. No reprimand smh
@Marie05755 жыл бұрын
She could have gotten more from the settlement, $150,000.00. Was just not enough after all she went through. Accusing her of lying, even locking her up.

This show was incredibly well made. But it still angered me so much because she wasnt believed. Because she was traumatised but they male detectives and her family and friends thought she should have been able to clearly state the facts and just make a report. As if it wasnt all this big huge emotional and physical ordeal she went through.
@marcustrelle4898 Жыл бұрын
I always wondered if someone would have gotten an angry reaction if they defended her back in 2009 right after her plea deal and accused the police of unintentionally gaslighting her, possibly in an online article with a headline like "Police gaslighting at it's finest". The critics would probably say something like how dare you defend an admitted liar and smear police officers without evidence.

When we first got Netflix this was one of the first shows I watched. It is an excellent show! Everyone did an excellent job in their roles. It's unbelievable (no pun intended..) that those Washington officers did not get any type of reprimand!! A great and heartbreaking show. The actors were superb!

2:29 *Her character name was “Det. Karen Duvall” and at **2:43** “Det. Grace Rasmussen” unless that are the detectives names in real life who actually solved the case. I’m assuming that’s the case, that that’s their real names and didn’t copy their names for the show*

The reason the system doesn't solve so many cases of violence done to so many is because the system is corrupt and wants crime to be committed to keep us in a constant state of fear and stress and more willing to accept the laws which curtail our freedoms with every passing day....as the whole sham Shakespearean Hypocrisy plays out in reruns after reruns; even the questions the public asks remain the same year in and year out; but nothing changes except for the worst.

I was totally pissed when I compared how Marie’s case was handled compared to how amber’s case was handled. The victim was treated like a criminal. These detectives needs a lesson when investigating assault cases. They never understand and feel the trauma their victims had already been thru, really pissed me off completely

I absolutely adore the writing in this show, Susannah Grant did a spectacular job. And i also loved how Detectives Pruitt and Parker were given NO SOLICE and NO “Yeah it’s okay” at the end. Because they did a shit job and didn’t deserve any kind of peace of mind.

How on Earth were these men not held accountable? That is gross misconduct in the most appalling and offensive of ways- not only was the life of one woman utterly obliterated overnight, but many other women went on to suffer at the hands of a rapist who only got 'better' at what he did. How on Earth were they not publically shamed and openly reported to be the criminals THEY are. Technically, with their inability to do their job, they had perverted the course of justice and deserved to serve a sentence as such. I am absolutely DISGUSTED by this

This amplifiers my reasons for hating a lot of cops. Very few try to do good by the people. But lot of them shouldn’t even be in law enforcement 🙄

I find it so incredibly difficult to understand how the police system isn’t putting more effort in trying to create a safe environment and process for people who are raped/sexually assaulted and put in a functioning system. When 995 out of 1000 go free. Surely that statistic alone should make any decent police officer disgusted with how procedures are being handled. Rape victims have to carry this shit for the rest of their lives. Are you going to make it as easy as humanly possible for them to live through that trauma or are you going to force the victim to live through it over and over again? Sick and tired of this shit.

Just watched the show, great depiction of the story and all the trauma of the victims, how the lynnwood police handled the situation and how luck helped move forward the case with colorado police. netflix delivered a great story and hope we can see more real life changing stories such as this one.
