Rush Adventure might be my favorite handheld Sonic game and is just below my top 5 favorite games in the series...at least when I revisit the game to just play a few stages instead of progressing the story. This was my go-to during high school, often playing a few stages after lunch waiting for my next class to start. Some of my favorite Zones are in this game with Sky Babylon, Ghost Ship, and Coral Cave. Always loved being able to play as Blaze in this though it's kind of puzzling that they didn't add Tails or Marine as playable characters, especially the latter (as much as I dislike her) since the story is centered on her. I enjoyed the variety with the different vehicle minigames (aside from the ship) and I enjoy most of the bosses even if some of them were a bit drawn out though not nearly as much as the bosses in the original Rush. It's even kind of fun clearing out missions to get little decorations for your island, it's a nice little touch. It's got significant problems, the campaign's pacing can be pretty bad, the mandatory grinding sucks and Marine is an obnoxious character but after getting through the actual story content, I'll still find myself coming back to this game to replay a few stages and clear out a mission or two every once in a while.
@HaxeRain3 жыл бұрын
the grinding can be a bit tedious only if you dont explore anything, the hidden islands are just so fast and easy to clear that the grinding becomes just a way to test your ability to clear them faster xD

It's actually NOT puzzling that Tails and Marine aren't playable in Rush Adventure considering Iizuka wants Tails to be a tech-only character (see not just SA2 and '06, but also Sonic X-the Advances and Heroes had more influence from Naka) and Marine was made to be a gag character, Tails counterpart or no. Same for Cream in Rush 1 because Iizuka sees girly girl and thinks joke character, just as he does with Amy (even though he made Amy physically STRONGER than Tails in Sonic X which is outright WRONG).

The Rush trilogy is still some of my favorite games in the series, and I still love the stories in them, despite how simple and laidback they are. Also hot take: I like the bosses in the Rush games. I understand getting impatient with them, but the attack patterns still feel unique enough compared to many other Sonic bosses that I still had fun dodging them, even if they’re long. Technically it was Sonic Heroes that introduced the "Boost gameplay" with the special stages, Rush is more the first official game where that was the main focus of gameplay.
@thelastgogeta3 жыл бұрын
Very true, but I think the focus should be on what "boost" does. If it doesn't trivialise (some) enemies or hazards while going fast... That isn't a boost in the modern context. (Heroes has a "boost" but it only works as timesave) He called the afterimages from Advance 2 and 3 "boost" a few times. Similarly, I think it is important to have a meter and to ignore slopes with "boost" In other words, Heroes is as close as can be to having boost first but never used it in Rush/Unleashed sense.
@hanezutchins27863 жыл бұрын
Didn't Sonic Advance 2 technically introduce the boost?
@thelastgogeta3 жыл бұрын
@@hanezutchins2786 How so? It had afterimages when you hit max speed but it was skill based to reach that speed (not resource and command based with no regard for physics) and it didn't destroy enemies or obstacles. Almost every "boost" can be done and held by command in the air as well with the Sonic Storybook Series being a rare case which makes it ground only and pretty weak since you have limited control. Do you mean something else in Sonic Advance 2?
@hanezutchins27863 жыл бұрын

@@hanezutchins2786 Only if the visual effect left behind by Sonic's movement is more important that how it actually works or is used in the game. My opinion is that it is that is the wrong way to measure a mechanic. How it looks is really unimportant to me when Spindash or curling into a ball is closer to being like Sonic Rush to Forces Boost. Sonic Heroes also has something REALLY close that is used sparingly. I admit that it seems to be called "Boost Mode" in Advance games but that's not actually relevant to how it works.

It’s pretty exciting to hear you’ll be covering Sonic Chronicles. It’s not fondly remembered by many because of the many situations the games’ release caused (thanks Penders) and because at the end of the day it’s only really a decent-enough RPG with passable touch screen gameplay. But it’s actually got a bunch of weird history, like the scrapped soundtrack and the absolute hackjob they did to replace it in the time given. I’ve actually got a particular fondness for the game as I love, love, LOVE that it tried to build on Knuckles’ character and background as current Sonic games absolutely decimated him as a character. But this game covers intraspecies and interspecies relationships in the Knuckles clan, with the Nocturne and the rest of the neat little alien cast. They weren’t developed *enough*, per se, but like, it was really neat to see what they ended up accomplishing. I’ve got a soft spot for the game myself, as do a couple of others. You should take a gander at the Sonic Chronicles Reimagined Twitter, it’s pretty cool; a bunch of people are working on a pc fanmade remaster of the game with the possibility of a sequel on the table. It’s a really cool project with not a lot of recognition, so don’t be afraid to throw them a shout-out in your video if you’d be so kind ;) For real though; awesome coverage of the rush series. The orbs don't respawn and if you get too many of them before their round, you won't have enough to finish the stage

Sonic Rush hardly was planned to be 2D. The sprites could maaaaybe be leftovers from Sonic Advance, but that's unlikely too. Before Sonic Rush, in E3 2004 there was a tech demo for the DS called "Sonic DS", which then turned into Sonic Rush later, and in that demo the game was already 3D. I can see why you didn't care for Rush Adventure but personally I was found most of the vehicle sections actually rather enjoyable the only one I really took issue with was the under sea tank mission as I thought it it could drag a bit but it wasn't enough to to bring down my enjoyment of the game as a whole. I absolutely love the story and characters of the games I found them delightful. Even though I don't agree with your sentiments and don't really agree that some of the points you made are truly flaws I can see why these games didn't work for you and I respect your opinion and wish you the best for your future videos.

Yeah the Sonic Rush games aren’t for everyone but they were interesting as the precursor to the gameplay we got in Sonic Unleashed day stages... Blaze is awesome, the soundtracks are great... but objectively speaking, I think Colors DS was the most streamlined and I think it shows in the way most have come to remember it even more fondly than I expected over the years.

Sonic Rush 1 and 2 are far and away my favorite 2D Sonic games. I'm posting from my old cringe account but I'm actually 27, and I've played almost every Sonic game. Maybe I'm supposed to respect the classics, or maybe I should love the Advance series (which I do) but Sonic Rush is by far the most replayable. The special stages are far more fun and manageable, the music is amazing, the story actually think the story is kind of adorable, and above all else, the game is just fun to memorize and speedrun. Also.... the more times you get hit in the Rush games, the further away your rings fly away from you. This insentivices the player to avoid getting hit at all during bosses, which all other Sonic games fail to do.

The final boss stage on Sonic Rush Adventure was Eggman and Eggman Nega piloting a giant mech called the Egg Wizard(?) You fight in the volcano of the hub world island, as Super Sonic and Blazing Blaze simultaneously. Sonic creates force fields that deflect incoming projectiles, Blaze shoots fire balls. I remember back when I finally got all the chaos emeralds and sol emeralds and then saw them transform to enact the finale stage. It felt so.. satisfying. And then after the battle and the finishing cutscene, the hub world's bgm changes to it's final tune, and that music is forever burnt into my soul mind. I think SR Adventure was meant to be a long haul of a playthrough, It could be called bad design with all of the repetitiveness, but I think low-key was were my affinity for grindy RPGs originated. A side note feature I distinctly remember, is that on repeat playthroughs on a level, you get to see the ghost of your best time race along side you, which I absolutely loved racing against! It was so much fun beating myself over and over, it getting harder each time, each play sessions I'd have... It's nostalgia, but Sonic Rush Adventure was my first and is my favorite game to date in the sonic franchise.

Sonic rush was my childhood, I remember staying at my grandma’s while my parents were at work, I’d always take my DS and having a blast trying to complete Rush. Until I got stuck at the Egg King. It’s a similar situation from sonic heroes, where the game had such a big impact in my life that i just don’t care if it’s not a perfect game, i just can’t help but love it
@internetloser2336 Жыл бұрын
It's reviews like these that definitely give Rush a bad name and why we haven't gotten ports of them. Rush is not a sequence to Advanced 3 considering how different the games play to each other. Advance 3 has level design is built around using momentum and selecting partners to help beat the levels faster while Rush rewards you for learning the ins and outs of each level to combo tricks and boosting through them as quickly as possible to achieve a better rank. Most people just gloss over the fact this is the only Sonic game that rewards you for boosting as much as possible AND getting a good time. Don't say a game is flawed if you can't be bothered to give the game a proper chance.

Great video as always J, though I get the impression you didn't know you could upgrade the jet-ski in Rush Adventure. You have to unlock all the boats first, I think. Makes the Johnny Races so much more bearable (iirc it makes the boost gauge larger). Of course do that, you need more materials which requires more filler content. Funny story. I played Sonic Rush as a kid without even knowing how to do tricks. I knew they existed because you’re ranked at the end of the levels with tricks being a factor. So I barely used the boost, relying way more on the spin dash to get through levels. I basically played Rush like the genesis and advanced trilogies

Your backstory with the DS is very similar to mine. My siblings had it first, I got a DSi later, they stopped playing with them and now I have theirs, wich is convenient because mine broke for overuse. Not that it matters because I usually play with my 3ds, but I wanted to share this.
@Komodo7723 жыл бұрын
I think the 2D rush gameplay is perfect. Using tricks are so fun and getting boost from it is satisfying. You have so much control in the air which makes it more fun for me and you barely see that in 3D games unless they force you to do tricks automatically. I would love to see a proper Sonic Rush 3 one day.

I'd still rather replay Rush 1 or 2 over any other sonic game released in the past 20 years. A second playable character that by design clashes with the main hero and isn't classic sonic, she even basically gets her own remix of the incredible soundtrack? Sign me up. Especially in the case of rush 2 the game isn't over in like, 5 seconds either, it has a chunky story with some fun stuff in there, take it or leave it.

The rush games feel like they were more a debut series for blaze before they entirely scrapped her after 06. Seriously the fact that sonics world is a lot more chill according to blaze, as well as the fact Neggman seems to be a far more arrogant and less subtle version of his counterpart, and that blaze doesnt even know who he is, signals the fact that blaze was taught to protect ONLY the emeralds and her kingdom. Really feels like there can be so much more done with her that just never happened. It also seems like "That was harsh" was going to be a recurring gag for blaze, where she just snaps and tells people to fuck off for good reason even if she could show them a bit more patience. Imagine a similar spinoff for blaze like they did for shadow where she realizes her own world is a lot more broken than she realizes thanks to her version of eggman and that its up to her to save it like sonic does for his. If the rush games were about her learning to be her own person, then next games would have been learning to love being a hero rather than just tolerate being a princess. Not gonna lie a lot of fun ideas could come out of just having blaze interact with literally anyone other than silver or sonic for a change. Ian Flynn seems to have some ideas in the comics but the most we got still is Marine in IDW(who i dont actually hate, again marine feels like shes supposed to be the tails of blazes world and so needed to learn similar lessons in what being a hero actually means).

Sonic Rush is the only game other than Colors where I found myself obsessively replaying every stage to earn the fastest time and S rank across the board. You have to fall in love with it and its vibe to get there I'm sure, but to me it turned the game into this exciting (no pun intended) rush of maximizing my speed beyond the obvious boosting. Learning the layout of the stages, and learning how to best utilize the tricks while not losing too much speed, and cutting off loops prematurely by jumping to skip ahead of the railroaded speed. There is a lot of technique to Rush, and it's the perfect game of "Easy to beat, challenging to master" and it became mezmerizing to me. You ought to give it another shot IMO.

They might be "fundamentally flawed", but they're a hell of a lot better than half of the shit in the Sonic series. Plus, they understand 2D level design way better than any """"3D"""" boost game. If we're going to keep having boost games, they should just stick to 2D to save resources, then have the 3D games slow down a bit so that it's more manageable to create on a regular basis without resorting to crutches that fill up most of the game like the Werehog, Classic Sonic and shitty 2D sections.
@DBMusicEX3 жыл бұрын
100% agree. Even though I like the Werehog sections. The boost games are better off being strictly 2D since they rarely do any good with the 3D sections and it could allow for better level design and better focus in terms of structure. Plus it's just better to have the games be short if it means avoiding implementing gameplay styles people didn't ask for. Forces unfortunately only proves this moreso. That time wasted on implementing Classic Sonic's shit gameplay and "role" in the "plot" could've bin used to improve the rest of the game potentially...
@ayrtonjoga2 жыл бұрын
I prefer the boost in the 3D games than in 2D because I can at least see what's ahead, visibility was already an issue in the classics and the boost could've fixed this issue by tweaking the level design, which was not the case for Rush 1
