This is a film of Neil Aggett's funeral in 1982, a major moment for the democratic and labour movements in South Africa. Dr Aggett, a trade unionporganiser for the African Food and Canning Workers Union (AFCWU) was jailed under special security laws for detention without trial, caught up in a 1981 crackdown by the apartheid regime. 70 days later, in early 1982, Neil was dead in his cell, allegedly "suicide". 100,000 workers went on strike in protest, and 10,000 attended his funeral. A 2020 inquest into his death has yet to conclude.
