@Joshua79C7 жыл бұрын
I am not color blind but the only two colors I seen are Red or Yellow, but depending on how far away the hydrant is from the main supply provider then yeah there will some but not significant pressure loss, seeing as many truck are equipped to raise from the standard hydrant pressure to a higher pressure by onboard water compression system.. Edit (ammend): Like I said and those others mention, they are not color coded to pressure or volume, the only reason they are colored differently is for aesthetics.

Lol, no i'm not a Firefighter and this had NOTHING to do with being one... This is about the Fire Hydrant. I just happen to work for a very big water utility in Texas. We also just opened up one of the largest inland water desalination plants in the United States. I am but a simple Water/Wastewater Mechanic... With a "C" wastewater License and a "C" Groundwater license in the state of Texas. Now then, the Fire hydrant doesn't give them their pressure... the water pressure comes from the pumps that supply the line..... the Hydrant is literally a Valve that is it.... Open or Close. Now once the water is out of the Hydrant and into the fire truck they do use Booster pumps to increase their PSI to help fight fires. More GPMS = Higher PSI

Interesting, where I am we are a small rural Fire Department and we don't use what people normally consider a fire hydrant. We have what are called dry hydrants. Not having a large central water system, these would not work for us, but would be great in cities.

Things like hydrants, traffic lights, etc are only replaced when repairs won't hold, or the cost to repair gets more expensive than the replacement. It's simply too expensive to replace infrastructure like this in large quantities at once. By the time it is due to be replaced, in reasonable quantities, you have 100 more similar hydrant designs to compete with. The cost is too large to justify the change in most cases. Look at the US, it is a common belief that the US should transition to the metric system, however, rewriting software to measure in metric, changing all the signs, textbooks, calibrating all the devices, replacement of many measuring tools, and much more would cost a fortune. So, do the benefits of switching to the metric system justify the cost?

So this video made me google why we dont have fire hydrants here in the UK. Turns out we do, and I've seen hundreds of them all over and just didn't know they were hydrants. For anyone in the UK thats wondering, those little signs with a yellow "H" on them that you see (trust me you've seen loads of them and would recognize them right away if you seen one) are actually fire hydrants, it's just a little hole in the ground. It's just that in the US they leave the external part that is above ground on the hydrant permanently and in the UK the fire brigade carry it in their trucks and attach it when needed (which is guess is a lot cheaper and probably a better way to do it IMO)

@Less1leg23 жыл бұрын
The OLD style Hydrants have their internal issues. After doing 60 hydrant flow tests this past weekend. Here is what I've come across. There are a number of makers of hydrants. Some are Oil Filled, some are Grease fitting. Some have different size Top Hydrant Valve stem Nut sizes. Each those fails internally on the bushing thread that pulls the valve stem OPEN to cause water flow. If the internal Bushing fails, either you cannot open the valve or in many cases. The hydrant fails to close, shutting off the water. This new hydrant design has an improved internal Valve design which makes opening or closing the valve easier and greatly reduces internal bushing valve stem breaking. The Hydrant Valve seat is a better design as well. The Old Version tends to get pipe scale jammed in the valve seat. Which means the valves doesn't totally close. You get leakage spilling into the surrounding underground drainage. This is apparent later after Hydrant Testing and the ground around the hydrant bubbles and becomes soft. I'd welcome the new Hydrants. But we know, many non Municipal industrial locations will not replace old version hydrants with new version hydrants because of COST. It's cheaper to replace the internal bushings on an old version hydrant than pull out the old hydrant and put in a new one.

For the people saying much hasn’t changed, you couldn’t be more wrong. polymers/plastics do not rust and degrade much slower than metals. If you look at most hydrant failures, it is the result of a part of the hydrant mechanism failing and not the water main itself. Also, when the water main breaks it is usually due to how the fire hydrant is operated (opened/shut too quickly).

It took so long to crank the fire extinguisher for half a minute then had to close it because he was flushing out all the dirt and rust. Then had to install the hose and loosen it up and take another 30 seconds of continuously cranking it open and attach the pipe. But this is gonna save time because you just unlock the huge cap that covers the hydrant and unloosen the bolt with a twist and youre ready to go. This will mainly save time and lives so enough with all the "It's still a fucking hydrant comments".

the people commenting here are not very smart because fire fighters have to deal with water thieves and when a fire hydrant is opened for no reason like a thief wanting free water it causes pressure problems which means it may cause fire fighters that are close enough by to take longer to put out a fire and the water pumps on fire trucks can increase the water pressure as much as they need it to get to but are limited by the water flow from the hydrant so that's why they are modernizing fire hydrants.

Never will either. SF has high, low pressure and draft systems. Took the earthquake and fire to teach us what we have. This guy is a joke.

In a nut shell I think basically its saying... >Easier for firefighters to access. >Won't leak when frozen I think. >Faster water. and personally >it looks shiner/cooler.

If it's so great than why is it leaking at 1:11 when you turn it on?

Let the fire people decide if this is a good idea. They are the only ones that should be deciding. I imagine this is an improvement, but it's this the only new model?

Yea let's use specialised tools made in China alone with the hydrants. And what happens when these things freeze up. Because up here in Detroit land it happens all the time .
@TheAmericanUhate7 жыл бұрын
So freezing up would only be an issue for these new ones on the video, not the old ones?

This is being recommended to me.... And I don't see a single comment pointing out at 0:50 the hydrant spins when he gets to start the water.... That is def not secure at all

Your main argument is that the fire hydrant is an old design. So is the wheel, but I don't see a rush to redesign them.
@cjeam91997 жыл бұрын
Destiny is Life look at the wheels on the Mercedes thing that was the first car, now look at the wheels on the latest koenigsegg, they're completely different. Don't be an ad-hominem idiot.
@liveyourbestlife37857 жыл бұрын
Completely different design yet still the same shape and function as when cavemen discovered them thousands of years ago.At the end of pipe, it's still just a valve sticking out of the ground. Subject to break. But hey, as long as I don't have to pay for that cheaply made eye sore we are good. Even at just 1000 dollars parts and labor to install each your talking near 50 million to do one city the size of Chicago . I believe we could figure a way to adapt current hydrants for increased flow and less breaks at a much lower cost.
