My mom has worked as a court stenographer her whole life. AI has threatened her job for the last 10 years, and while executives have pushed for it to reduce costs, the actual judges and people working in the courtroom demanded stenographers stay employee rather than transcription AI because they hate not dealing with a human. I imagine this field will experience something similar for now-although with one caveat: tech employees are obviously more tech savvy than older judges.

Thank you for sharing this. I’m really glad that the court judges valued personal connections and your mom got to keep working. Nobody *really* knows what the future holds, but we can all do our part to maintain the value of human connections. Thanks again for sharing and happy holidays!

I'm a Dir of UX Design and at my company we have VPs asking us to supply AI tools to our UX/Product designers to do UX writing. They've been piloting this for the past few months and like the results of pairing UX Designers with AI assistants. They canceled all reqs for content design at our company and are getting ready to layoff over half of our content designers. So much panic in our org.

I'm sorry to hear about the situation in your org. This is really sad for so many reasons. It's unfortunate that your leadership sees AI as a way to replace content designers--this only means that they see content designers as people who only craft surface copies. This also means UX designers will take on more job responsibilities without getting compensated properly. It must be difficult for design managers/directors like you who recognize the value of content design but have limited control over leadership decisions.

Hi! Your content is so informative! I’m really interested in learning more about UX design & I wanted to know are there many English majors/masters who do well in the field? Or would you say it is not for us?

Hi Fatima, thanks for the comment. It’s really hard to answer this question without knowing your background/interests. I’ve personally met plenty of UX Designers with unconventional backgrounds, so I don’t see how having an English degrees would be a problem. I do see a lot more English major folks in content design roles though. As you explore UX design as a career path, definitely look into content design, UX writing, or even technical writing too.

Hey Fatima! I know plenty of EN majors who are now content designers or UX writers. I'm in my thirties, so this happened because the field didn't exist when we started our careers and we adapted and grew with the tech world. You'll have to supplement your degree with additional training if you don't have an opportunity to learn on the job. There are some really good in-person UX boot camps, I'd look for one in your city. There is also a lot of good online training, too. I've personally used Interaction Design Foundation, and Nielsen Norman Group is the standard in the industry for information. Good luck!
