The problem in Pennsylvania is that there's a large amount of hunters who can't tell the difference between a 1.5 year old and a 6.5 year old. They literally think they are seeing the same spike for years on end. This " Look how old it is, it's gray in the face, and it's going down hill" is still very prevalent in pa hunters believe it or not. They think they are helping the gene pool when in reality they are killing yearlings.

We cannot think of the state agencies as enemy #1. As stated, PA has some of the best regulations in place. Whereas, even Iowa has more liberal regulations. The major differences are parcel size, hunting population, pressure and habitat. Furthermore, your point to being in the right neighborhood anywhere can grow big bucks. The right neighborhood, in general, has larger parcels which equates to less hunters, less pressure and better habitat management.

@ I had a blast as a kid in the 90s but it was “brown it’s down”. I watched grown men talk about how old there spike was. The knowledge wasn’t there and we really had no clue what these deer were doing. If someone we knew shot a 100 inch “8 pointer” you were the hero that year. I get the feeling of not knowing the buck you shot even existed but these cameras Increased our chances of shooting a mature buck like 1000%(in more ways than one)

Put antler restrictions on the buck harvest. Have never seen stats in Texas showing most deer are killed on high fence (high fence is driven by exotics in a lot of places, not huge mutant whitetail) and we have a 13” antler restriction on bucks in a lot of counties. Doesn’t get more deer from 3-4 but does stop a lot of 1-2 year olds from getting shot.

2 things. Im seriously considering a defensive fence against one of my neighbors. I wont do a 12 ft but im thinking a really nice 8ft woven wire all the way to a pinch point would work. And i believe wholehearted that 60% of deer in Missouri go untagged

Could the implementation of antler restrictions potentially boost the population of mature bucks? I’m aware that several states have adopted this policy. FYI not every buck in Texas is confined to high-fence properties! I own a 3,500-acre ranch in Texas without any high fencing and my neighbors don’t have any either. That said, I would love to install a high fence on my property in Minnesota, where hunters up there shoot whatever they see.
@HUNTRPOD

So they only do so much. Get them to 2.5 for sure but beyond that no guarantees. It’s a must for states with high hunting populations, but absolutely can high grade a deer herd if not done right

I generally love the content, but parts of this podcast were tough. I hope my comments are considered constructive. One example: “Every deer in TX is in a fence”. Then you settled on 95%. Texas is 172 million acres. In the early 2000’s TPWD reported 4million in high fence. That’s a lot, but it’s less than 2.5%. If that number has now doubled to 5%, you’re still off by 90%. I get the passion and sentiment, and at a base level I share your concerns, but a lot of these points needed more thought/research and less conjecture.

@HUNTRPOD the things we do for deer 😂 but that's what I've been doing to with moderate success, I've thought about putting strategic pressure along that border the week prior to gun to kinda disrupt any moment around there but I'd hate to accidentally push them off, the deer are alot smarter then I tend to give them credit for. Is frustrating though with the indiscriminate killing of anything brown with hooves. Appreciate the response and enjoy your podcasts.

Your off base, the on base element is cost. #1 taxidermist price and taxidermist seeming to add additional cost on top of the cost. #2 everything that involves the hunting industry cost more and more, for example, arrows, broadheads, bullets. Just the basics to get it done. #3 deer processing, processor, cost way up. #4 cost of tags from any state. Add it all up and the deer hunter numbers go down.

1st off EHD in 2012 last year and this year have had a huge impact on herd numbers. 2nd covid came and everyone got bored and a bunch of new people decided to start hunting that never hunted before or didn't have time too. 3rd rich out of state guys are leasing everything up in places like here in Indiana because a Non-Resident license is cheap like is only 240. 4th outfitter popping up everywhere. My county has one the neighboring county has one and there are a couple in KY that cover the other surrounding counties on top of my county having 3500 public acres the other neighboring county with the outfitter has over 3000 acres of public hunting. South Eastern Indiana is complete trash I've only seen 1 or 2 quality bucks killed so far this year in my county. 5th not all states have a declining number of hunters. I believe some just quit hunting their state and hunts in another. Since the Huff buck was killed and Indiana became #2 on the most Bonners killed behind Wisconsin so there's far more people hunting here in Indiana. 6th it's becoming all about the money. Who has the most is who has access to the best ground

Now there is 750k hunters hunting 10 plus days a field a year. Those people need places to go, that now justifies leases and buying…..” Direct quote from yall. Problem is there are not 750k with 10plus days a field. There are 750k licensed hunters in pa. Only 350k of which are archery hunters and may have a crossbow in their hand outside of rifle season. So only 350k hunters in PA are in the field all season long until they tag out. The other 400k hunters are still only rifle hunters.

Also you guys spend alot of time talking like theres a looming deer apocalypse coming. I don't see any of that in the south. You guys are in a area with great midwestern states and the higher populated region of the country right next to each other. Killing big mature deer feels more available than ever just requires little more effort or travel.

You guys should try a call-in Dave Ramsey style "show" during some live sessions. This podcast would have been a great one to get listener input. Are those Good AI results you read on fencing? That doesn't sound language they use for regulation writing. In Michigan, fences greater than 52 inches are required to have a 40 ft. gap for every 660 ft. of fence. I'd bet most states have something like this in place so an individual cannot impede a public resource. It's worth looking into. Baiting has been illegal in Michigan since 2019. Personally, I have seen minimal change. Mounds of carrots, apples and beets are sold all over. I believe those with deep pockets (and they usually have larger properties) are bringing in truckloads of bait at times. It's odd to smell such a strong aroma of sugar beets the weekend before rifle season when they are not grown in our area... I believe the best way to make a change is the one buck rule. We have all seen a 60" 8 point, but if you are allowed just one buck, you are likely to be more particular about what you harvest. There have been numerous posts where guys show a 1.5 year old and say, "Well, now time to go after the big one." There is a huge mentality in Michigan that "I must get a buck" regardless of what it is. Don't let guys do that twice to young deer.

Yes leasing is a major one we have been discussing. In an upcoming episode we talk about how if they weren’t a business write off they’d dramatically decrease

Everybody wants big antlers. It's unrealistic for most hunters. It's ruining the sport.

Ideally, we take some of the technology away to make future hunting better. But humans are greedy and lazy, so it probably won't happen. I'd take away turret scopes long-range shooting systems. ln the West its getting ridiculous with 1,000 yard plus shots. No cell cameras, no rut hunts with scoped rifles (only primitive muzzleloader and archery), no crossbows in archery season, limit non-resident tags, no baiting (food plots included). That's a start of what l would do. A lot of this applies to the West. I'm not sure what's going on in the East.
