It depends on what you call politics. Theatrical movies have practically zero romance anymore, even movies that seem like they will in the trailers like Twisters. They cut the kiss out of Twisters because a woman being in love with a man isn't current year enough (paraphrasing). Even Dune 2 basically removed the romance, portraying Chani as distrusting rather than supportive. I would call it political to change source material (Dune books) to try and shape culture.

I know that Ultron was an AI created by Tony Stark in the MCU, but GAWD DAMN I was sick of everyone having the same snarky sense of humor as Tony Stark by that point. Even the villain did in Age of Ultron. Ultron in the comics is an evil monster. Ultron in the MCU was, "What if Tony Stark thought like Thanos?" He just talked like a regular dude. Most of his animated appearances give his voice a robotic sound effect like the G1 Transformers, and a robotic speech pattern like Data from Star Trek. The Ultron from Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes is a great example.

I read Marvel comics when they’re on sale digitally but that’s about it really. I’m just not interested in most the Hollywood IP anymore, with how disappointed I’ve been. I’m only really excited about individual creators and original stories now.

I don't see a big problem in IP movies when they are well made and made by competent people who first of all want to make a good movie, like: Alien: Romulus, Furiosa or Transformers One. I can't criticize good movies just because they are part of a famous franchise. But if they're made by people who don't care about this franchise and it's all done just because the studio wants to get money out of people, like with Venom 3, Joker 2, or Borderlands, then screw them. But in general, yes, I would like more original films.Especially some big sci-fi franchises, because I'm getting a little tired of just jumping back and forth between a few of the same franchises.

Personally, I think trying not to be political will improve the writing in some (not all) cases. My problem with Disney’s approach to political messages is that a lot of the time they don’t know how to implement them in a natural way. My issue with She Hulk wasn’t the feminism, it was the clunky, eye roll worthy way they included it in the script. A lot of the time if you just relax and let your characters be characters then the message writes itself. I disagree that Twisters was entirely message free, it just wasn’t hamfisted about it. As far as Marvel movies go, a lot of the phase one movies had something to say (Iron Man, Capt. America, and Black Panther specifically) but again, the messaging felt natural. And I think it’s stupid to insist that the mere presence of women, people of color and or queer people is in and of itself pushing an agenda, but if you just allow those characters to be cool and interesting and pivotal to the story then the loud minority of naysayers wouldn’t have nearly as much of a leg to stand on. Arcane is always the property brought up to make this argument, but it’s for good reason. I know it’s easier said than done, but just write a damn story.

1) So something good and zeitgeisty to come out would require that a writer predict the mood of the public 1-2 years in advance. So if hollywood is trying to work out what went wrong, it might be a year or two before they can actually react. 2) Likeable leads go a long way. It doesn't apply across the board, but it's often easier to get an audience to spend 2 hours with someone they like versus someone they find obnoxious. Back in the day, I think they did a study that found that seeing the cast of 'friends' produces a similar reaction in the human brain to actual friends. 3) I agree about the writing to a point. However, if someone sees the world through a political lens, then that might impact story concept, produce inorganic exchanges, etc. So with The Marvels, there's an argument that they butchered a variety of elements. But they also staked the project on the likability of Bree Larson. With Snow White and The Acolyte, the politics seemed to show up in the hiring. The actors also seem super into lecturing the audience. So one problem might manifest as another.

I'm not blind to the huge suathe of liberal-leaning projects we've been getting (focusing on "strong female characters," POCs, LGBT+ representstion) but I really don't think that's the issue causing the movies to bomb. It's just plain bad writing, lack of passion, lack of respect for the source material, etc. Much more practical issues. Correlation not causeation. I'd gladly watch a project with a gay black female lead if it just wasn't cringey, preachy, or otherwise mean-spirited towards the franchise's roots like so many movies and shows have been lately. It is very unfortunate that Hollywood doesn't see the issue as bad writing, they blame the female leads instead. So stupid and near-sighted, couldn't expect anything less from executives. It's also unfortunate that, because they're so near-sighted and complacent, the future is indeed likely going to be them just relying on recognizable IP for the forseeable future. As long as they can write honest stories that aren't preachy or mean-spirited, maybe they can slowly gain the confidence to start writing original projects. Mayhe. I won't let my hopes get too high lol.
