The modern single family home is where the advertising campaign for the Second Los Angeles was created and transmitted, thanks to a series of famous advertisements by the architectural photographer Julius Shulman. Those photographs suggested the forward-looking, deeply glamorous optimism of postwar Los Angeles, epitomized by the hillside modernist house with a pool - and, of course, a view to die for. But what does that dream look like now? These homes were meant as prototypes for a new generation of middle-class housing - big on architectural character but modest in size and price. Today, they are rented out for parties, film shoots and product launches. What you can see from their living rooms is not the expanse and promise of Second L.A. but a landscape of conflict in the flats of Hollywood, ground zero for debates about growth, density and development. John Lautner’s Sheats-Goldstein house has been pledged by its owner to the L.A. County Museum of Art, to become a kind of hyper-modern house museum. There’s the palpable sense that L.A.’s architectural experimentation at the level of the individual building - especially the single-family house - has passed into history, is something to be protected by a museum, to be looked at as if under glass.

Houses are so expensive and you wonder why people leave in droves to elsewhere. Wages have stayed stagnant but everything else you need has risen

I still dont understand why LA is afraid to reach for the sky (literally). I understand that earthquakes make building skyscrapers expensive but it doesn't stop other cities around the world. Also, I realize that building a parking structure for a small plot of land is difficult but not impossible! The only buildings that go up more than a few stories seem to be the luxury ones which doesn't solve LA's housing issue.

this might work if houses didn't look this ugly! i dont mind new ideas but why do they all have to be a bunch of boring squares, rectangles and any combination of the two?

Los Angeles really neeeds to focus on mix use development and redeveloping already developed areas.. Stop building on untouched land.. Also, accommodate people of all social classes..

Brits love to tell Americans how to run their country. Fine, but did she have to sound so disgusted about single family homes? That's what people wanted at the time.

A sad, but honest truth is that many really good locations geographically in cities are riddled with low-income neighborhoods that are crime-ridden with hookers and junkies on every corner. No one wants to develop there. No one with money wants to live there. Municipal governments should be looking for solutions to solve that problem instead of expanding farther and farther from the geographic city center.

"the nuclear family is outdated" ok, sorry, no. Mom and Dad still want to raise a traditional family. Stop acting like nihilists and thinking biological tendencies don't matter. This is why everyone is leaving LA. Nobody wants to seriously raise a family there. It's just a city full of young professionals trying to make something of themselves, the moment you want to start a family you leave.Hopefully to move into a home that doesn't look like an overpriced shipping container.

Why so ugly? Is it that bad to build something that is pretty in the modern era? Does every building have to look like a shipping container? There are plenty of far better examples of this type of thinking in current buildings that have been built or are under construction. But which are also much better to look at. Why not build these in the Art Deco, Spanish revival or Italian villa styles that are so common to the city? This modernist architecture is just gonna look dated and rundown in a few years

You’re missing the point . Aesthetics becomes frivolity when demand for raw housing outweighs other issues. That’s the whole point of the conversation of topic in the video ... this is precisely why we are in this predicament.
@Someonesaidthis

I second what Billy Bimkins said.. If all of LA consisted of modernist architecture, it would look like a eye sore and culture-less metro.. You can always recycle used materials if you don't want to hurt the environment.. I think all these silicon valley modernist snobs have ruined many communities in California, also along many west coast cities..

I’m leaving soon as I value my happiness! I bought a condo in West Hollywood in 80’s but can’t afford or want to live in a single family home that costs near 800,000 as House taxes will be minimum 7000. and the quality of homes is crap and so many bad neighborhoods now. 30 years ago it seemed real nice but the world has changed and then it takes 2 hours to go to Hollywood Bowl or Dodgers Stadium. Btw I’ve used the public transportation over the years and it’s at all time low as it sucks is very slow compared compared to other cities.

This is great for LA and urban centers like San Francisco and San Diego. But it would be a fallacy to assume that this should be applied everywhere in California. I live in the Inland Empire because I like elbow room, a fenced in back yard, and a garage to putter around and experiment in. LA should do what is best for LA but leave the rest of us who choose a non-urban life style alone. I will fight a California of the cities for the cities by the cities.

I think build denser in LA would be great for your interests then. The housing crisis causes people to move to cities like yours and crowds them, so if they build denser in LA it will solve this

Most of the time yards, especially front yards, aren't used by people. It's work to maintain in lawn weekly. Trees....ever seen a neighbor's tree fall on your car? It's a hassle to get insurance company to respond to it.

You can go to a public park for trees and fresh air and to play with kids. Private yards that take up valuable space have no place in a city.

I don't understand how the US continues to struggle so much with public housing solutions when places like Singapore have created, and successfully used, beautiful public housing solutions for several decades. This idea of a square cement monolith is okay when talking about design. But humans need greenery in their lives. I don't understand why rooftop gardens and green balconies aren't being incorporated in new construction.

dubreil07 I hate to tell you but induced demand is just a stupid theory created by highway haters. In reality the extra crowding happens as the population grows more because they can now reach new places to expand faster. Say you have a 2 hour commute and u add another lane onto the highway this incentivizes more construction on the fringe leading to more housing tracts leading to more traffic as more people are now there it's not as simple as more roads make more traffic because that literally makes 0 sense
