The Future of Motocross | MX Nation S5E1

The world of American motocross has reached a crossroads. With the increasing popularity of Supercross and resulting financial incentives for riders and teams, traditional motocross seems increasingly to be pushed to the backseat. The length of the back-to-back seasons is also placing stress on the riders and teams, and thus more focus is placed on the more lucrative Supercross season in the first half of the year. Meanwhile, in Europe, riders are weaned on motocross year-round and develop a skillset that American riders just can’t match, as evidenced by their lackluster results at Motocross des Nations. Can the American motocross industry reverse this trend? Top riders and teams weigh in.

I can only comment on my own experiences. Supercross: -Drive 1 hour to Seattle -World class food in walking distance, organized event experience with competent staff -Arena food and drinks are OK but still expensive MX: -Drive 3 hours to Washougal -Massive traffic getting to and from the track -Minimal hotels an hour away or a crappy campsite on a hill -Bad food, horribly unorganized staff, very hit or miss experience I attend both since they offer world class racing. But what will my casual race fan neighbor let me talk him into? What event will a new race fan consider? To blame MX’s decline in popularity on video games and Facebook is ridiculous.

Same deal with spring creek/Millville. In 2019, the parking for Millville flooded so badly, over half of the people had to get towed. The food was awful. Meanwhile, the supercross in Minneapolis was comfortable, clean, good food, parking was plentiful.

that's so true and it has happened before. motocross was originally what we now call enduro. then it became more spectator oriented and branched off into flat track and motocross.

Supercross and four strokes ruined motocross. Even amateur tracks (if there are any around you) have Supercross jumps throughout. We had big jumps back in the day but they threw you out, not up. I raced pro (1978/79) at the St. Pete Missouri national track and there were three huge jumps on the back straight and man could you soar off those jumps. Tracks in the 70's were tough, technical but safe. I watched Bob Hannah and Roger Decoster battle it out for two 45 minute motos at St. Pete (trans Am)and they both literally fell off their bikes back in the pits. And not a double or tipple jump on the track. Another problem is the requirement to qualify for a pro license through Loreta Lynn's. I got my pro license in 78 by just applying for it. I then started to show up at nationals and ran qualifying moto's the day of the race. The tracks were brutal but doable for an accomplished racer. I quit going to Supercrosses. It's rigged system. Ever notice that the top guy might lap up to 10th or better? That's because the factory teams build the exact track they are going to race on for the riders to practice on. Supercross track builders are required to build jumps to an AMA specification. Height, distance between jumps . etc. So unless your daddy is rich and can build the jumps for you your screwed. I doubt Bob Hannah would ever been a pro motocrosser today with what it takes to get a pro license. He was just a poor kid living in the desert working at DG welding up pipes. No motor home daddy to haul him around instead of graduating high school. Same goes for most of the top riders back "in the day". We can't go back in time. The past for motocross was better and it will never return because the bikes are expensive considering the cost of modifications to be competitive of and don't forget $20/gal race fuel! The tracks are dangerous and built for four strokes (short take off ramps). Roger: You were my sports hero and thank you for all the wonderful memories of watching you race.

@Wall Cutter 4-strokes were forced on us by environmental pressure by a bunch of global enviro-freaks. Interference like that raises, from governments, raise the cost of a product. Don't expect fuel injected KTM's/Husky's to cost what the YZ250 (2-stroke) does. The enviromental case freaks are trying to kill the two stroke, and are raising the cost that contributes into killing the sport. I don't know how old school you are, but in 76, I bought my first brand new dirt bike, with money I earned myself at the age of 12. Bought another at 14, another at 16---only making $1.00/hr part time as a kid, (did not pay taxes under 18 back then either). The things the 'progressive/communistic" FIM are doing is driving up the cost, and that is why the trails and tracks we built are all grown in, and that is what will end this sport with in 20 years I estimate. It may remain as a electric bike racing for the few rich left, like polo, but no kid will ever get the opportunity I had, (a lot of kids had), to get into racing. The only reason why a kid races today, is because dad did it. I had no parental support for 10 years of racing, working in restaurants and paying for my own college, (my first degree), at the time also. I missed the muscle car era, but I did get to enjoy the grass roots of the dirt bike era. Here is a saying I made up; "We are all born into the USA of today, not knowing how great she was yesterday.". That saying can go back to 1900.

You are right. The truth hurts. $10,000 bikes and a lawsuit happy America ruined the sport for the average American. As for the pros, supercross and the AMA ruined the sport with their terrible rules. Supercross is a show. People show up for laser light shows and to get drunk because football is over. Main events are sprints. We can't even get the fastest riders to represent their country at the de nation's anymore.

I think kids aren't riding motocross as much as they used to because of the cost and that you cant ride dirtbikes anywhere anymore. You used to be able to piss off your neighbors back in the day and not get the goddamn cops called on you. Now days you can just about be sued for noise pollution

Grinning Guise well it would be a bit late to start in high school. most of these guys started around 4 years old and already had sponsors by the time they got into high school. while money is an issue, it's more of a side effect of the supply and demand. at the same time we see other markets open up. while it becomes harder for the average person to go pro in racing we also see motovlogging grow.

Grinning Guise most little league kids look up to their hero player, but don’t expect to become a pro. It’s the same with dirt bikes. Get a used bike, some beginner gear and a parent who will drive you to a field and that kid will have a great damn day. We keep thinking riding motocross means trying to become a professional and racing every weekend. That has nothing to do with it for the masses. Enjoy the sport, ride your bike and grow the community.

There needs to be an actual stock class at the am Nationals, Like stock every thing, revalved suspension , you can change Handle bars , levers , tires , air filters, sprockets ,and that's it Even then there would still be an advantage but a local fast guy that don't have a wealthy family could still show their skills in that class.

I grew up racing motocross, there is absolutely nothing like it in the world. I feel it's a shame that USA puts supercross at the top spot of the podium while outdoors is an afterthought. Outdoors will ALWAYS be BETTER than supercross in my opinion, motocross takes way more heart & athletic prowess. That being said these riders are being pushed to their limits, they need to have more off time between the seasons.. happy riding 😁💨👍

I agree with you half way. Although motocross is frickin awesome, it can get boring but hear me out. Motocross the tracks are really open and the motos are long so a lot of times all the heavy hitters get spread out then there isn’t any battles going on ten minutes before the race ends. Supercross it’s a constant battle from the time that gate drops to when the candles are lit

It was interesting to hear Justin Cooper point out that in 2018 the US riders all pitted apart from each other. It’s a team event representing your country and they acted like it was a weekend at the track where your buddies might be on the other side of the pits, instead of uniting as a team under one tent

I read in the comments that MX is so expensive in US. I live in Germany and we can go for the cheaper bikes too. You can literally find a nice bike for 2-3k in euros. Training costs are 10-20euros. Sure, putting a kid through mx when they are still growing up, adds up on the costs, but they don't ride brand new stuff all the time. Two of my training friends travel every year to California to train for two weeks and they bring lot of stuff back, because it is cheaper there. So I don't know, we do compromises and it works.

I feel for you guys, I really do. I live in Oregon and we have so much riding available. 1hr drive from the sand dunes, 15 mins to any mountain around, and quite a bit of outdoor tracks. Ryan Huffman's parents property where he grew up is about a 40 min drive from me and they have two moto tracks and a supercross style track. By invite only, but you get the point. Come to Oregon guys, you wont regret it.

MXoN at Maggiors Webb crashed, but Herlings crashed too, not to forget it was his first 450 race ever, and still he was the fastest guy there. Me I'm from Germany, and after Lommel our team sucks every year, even at Red Bud when he had our top three on the line, and normally they should have made it on the podium, but they were back to nothing again. But to me it's no prob to say the other teams and nations are better, so why is it so often that hard for the Americans to admit that their days as the best mx nation are gone? Your riders are still good, and some of them are great at SX, but in MX there are better ones today. Kenny once was the only guy on one level with Herlings, but since his injuries he's not the old one anymore, and I think he never will be.Sad but true. Is it so hard to say Tomsc is great but some Euros surely are better? If you follow the GPs you should have noticed the Dutch guys are winning everything today, going 1-2 at the last rounds and also strong at MX2, that all on hard soil. Should be VERY hard for any other team to beat them especially on their homeground sand.

Being someone who watches both the AMAs and the MXGPs, you just can't ignore how much better guys like Cairolli, Prado, Herlings, and about five or six more are than Americans. And it isn't because we don't have the talent in the U.S. It's like Roczen was saying, they're doing an insane amount of races. You can't tell me we couldn't do just motocross over here. Heck, supercross is our money pool because we make it our money pool. They do like 17 or 18 outdoor races a year spread out over like six or seven months over there and still make it work. Cut the supercross season down to twelve just like outdoors, then start outdoors the second week of May like we've always done. That gives them like five weeks between seasons. Now it's even more grueling because right after outdoors we want the top guys to keep practicing for the des nations, then after that the Monster Energy cup in October, then it's time to start supercross training again. Like Kenny said, how on earth do we think that is even remotely safe for anyone. I don't care how in shape you are, nobody can do that kind of schedule for more than five years or so. And we're having great riders like Dungey and Villopoto retire young because of it. The only reason Windham stayed as long as he did was because he was already like 30 when we started this stupid schedule.

You're totally true but I have to admit the Euro's schedule isn't easier at all. They start with 3 pre season races in early feb, then got 18 - 20 GPs till mid sept, and inbetween they got their own national championships, with many riders racing them in different states. So most of them also got no much off weekends at all. Not to forget all GPs and many other races are run about the whole weekend, without any rest on sunday like the Americans got the whole season. So be sure the Euros' season is very hard as well.

I don't know ow you can say the world championships are working well, when they can't fill a 40 racer gate, and waste the entire industries resources with races in 3rd world nations who do not buy bikes. To me, it looks like the world championships are failing faster than the USA championships. What we have in this sport is the FIM operating under global government interests more than us being able to race interests.

Give them a longer break between SX and MX. And do away with the MEC. Yes the MEC is exciting and fills the gap between the MX and SX seasons...but it's killing the focus on MX.

Na leave the MEC just drop 2 races from sx and two from mx. Then they will actually wamt to race mxon. Mx will always be second class to sx because its not as good of a spectator sport. Spectators = money = investment from teams/tv/brands/other companies

Yea old bikes are cheap however the cost of living is so outrageous these days you need to very careful how you select your hobbies. Just routine maintenance like top end, fork seals, chain/sprocket, fluids, filters, tires etc. It adds up quick.

As an American, I can safely say you guys will own MXGP for a long while to come from my view, but I'm actually enjoying the hell out of watching Cairoli, Herlings, Prado, Gajser, Febvre, Olsen, Searle, Watson, Sterry, and the likes kicking ass though.....I mean, who do we have over there besides Harrison, Sanayei, & Root right now anyway? (No disrespect to those guys, but I'm not just talking about a few select riders flying over there just for the MX of Nations either)........for real, our grass roots over here are as fouled up as an old 1973 Penton Mudlark 125 running on a tank full of last years ethanol (smh)......right now seems all we got is helicopter parents, cell phone / gaming babysitters, climate change hawks, gov't regs, rising insurance rates, a dying middle class, disappearing land & tracks, soaring costs for bikes that don't even run, EDM, gender studies / post-modern influences, and big pharma killing all the rest not already glued to their damn phones......not to mention we already skipped 1 generation, & skipping the 2nd now......it's bad.....& we need to get our heads outta our asses before we see any new serious outdoor MX talent.

I think we need to combine SX and MX into the same championship. 4-5 rounds of MX right after the SX season all leading to one over all champion. Then a long enough off season for riders to recover and the teams to improve.

Honestly I like supercross better I find the racing is more intense. They just need to cut the number of erasers in the main event down in half. The lappers always mess up the racing and there's no point of them even really being there. It is two different types of being fast though supercross is more skill or is Motocross takes less skill but more endurance.

As a kid that rides I love loading up my bike and going to a track it is truly an awesome feeling I prefer motocross tracks over supercross but what I do in the after noon is go down the road to my friends house get him to get his bike ride back and then ride the trails in the back of my property all afternoon it is my escape its what I love and I wouldn't give it up for anything.

I can remember when the wage of doing work was good here in the USA ! A fast car cost 3500.00 and a dirt bike was 1200.00 and at the time my wage was 23.11 an hour in 1980 now my wage is 35.00 doing the same job and that is only in the last 2 years it stayed at 20.00 an hour from 1989 until now... It is what it is. Most people would agree- Supercross is easier to watch/follow on TV or even at the stadium over outdoor MX. MX sometimes gets boring to watch on TV & hard to see at the track. I grew up in the 60s/70s with Evel Knievel so I love all jumps. Sport is way better with them. If USA riders are too busy here with our Racing year round, so be it. By the way, Im 60yrs old still racing MX.
