A delivery truck is probably the best option to go all electric, because they aren't going that far, and come back to the depot every night where they could charge. The hybrid really makes sense for trucks that often don't come home at night, like construction or logging trucks. If the Edison is as open as it looks, the nice thing is that someone can build a bigger battery pack for the truck in 5 years time, or even replace the generator, when the infrastructure is there to support electric trucks in more use cases.

Two of my favorite channels together! Edison Motors is doing what my brothers and I have though was the right idea for years, it makes SO MUCH sense and is so obvious that it nearly smacks you in the face. Tow trucks are another perfect application: All that time sitting with a big clattering diesel idling to run some hydraulics, that's just silly! Oh and Right to Repair? ALL IN!! I work for a company that repairs equipment in data centers and we see every day new attempts by the manufacturers to lock in their services and force people into replacement rather than maintain current gear. Horrible for the environment!

I've been think converting garbage trucks would be ideal. They are stop and go other than when they are driving to the landfill. Sure you could fully electrify it but if you could get away with only firing up the diesel engine once a day the battery pack could be much smaller which would be less weight and cost. An even smaller diesel engine would be fine for that. Run on electric for the stop and go and then when you are on the higher speed road where it's steady going the diesel can run. The advantage with that would also be up here in Canada with it being so cold during those cold few months you could have a diesel heater in the truck. Those diesel heaters are extremely efficient. Like .1 liters of diesel per hour for 2 kw of heat.

@pin65371 I thought about garbage trucks and even city buses with their stop and go cycles. Regarding garbage trucks, I would say that a lot of the noise produced is actually the hydraulics and the clattering of all the mechanical hardware in the compactor. The engine noise would still be there, but could be a constant hum of a smaller displacement motor running a steady rpm. Nevertheless, the efficiency improvements and possibly wear and tear reduction on drivetrain and brakes would be an advantage.

Ricki, I've been watching your videos and sharing them with friends, but more importantly, my four grandchildren, for about 4 years now. I have to say that this has been one of your best videos ever. I grew up in the forest industries in Washington. I've owned and driven class 8 trucks a lot of miles. both on the highways and the vocational market as well. These trucks are nothing but stupendous! I have a close friend in Merritt, B.C. who lives across Coldwater Road from Chace's property where they built their first trucks. I see an enormous possibility for their trucks. I will be making a trip up to visit my buddy soon and meeting Chace, Eric, and the gang to see what they are up to. I now live in Sweden and can see endless possibilities for Edison's work there. I am really looking forward to the future. I saw your panel interview last night and discovered this now. Thank you so very much for the fine work that you do. This video will help you create a bridge in the gap between the more white collar class and the working class viewers. I encourage you to remember that there are plenty of highly educated blue collar types that chose to not sit under fluorescent or LED lights for their entire careers. A lot of us are very creative and current on new and emerging technologies. Getting dirty at a person's play on the weekend might have a whole new meaning for those of us that choose to get dirty for work and play........and we know how to 'clean-up well' for when we go to town.

Trucks in Alaska's North Slope oil field sometimes get started in fall and don't get turned off (except to change oil) until spring. Because it's so hard to start a cold motor at 40- or 60-, it's easier to just leave them running 24/7. These trucks may only have a few scores of thousands of miles on the odometer but they have thousands of hours of idle run time.

Topsy is built super heavy for its intended use case but chase did say his first prototype dropped 300 lbs by going hybrid. Thank You for helping Edison for more views. Are you going to also make another video on their pickup conversions between Edison Motors and Deboss Garage? I hope you do. I love the ideas Edison has come up with and I love that they are planning on conversions of pickup trucks. I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 2500 HD 5.9 Gas (one year newer than they are prototype converting right now). The truck is in generally great shape but when the engine and/or trans goes out I would love to do their conversion. Drive it around town and all electric all the time and recharge at home. Go on long trips with my 5th wheel RV and have the diesel generator to keep me going and allow for much more efficient and cleaner than the standard gas/diesel vehicles. It just makes sense. Edison’s idea for this is the refit of purpose built vehicles like tow trucks and vehicle maintenance type trucks that go help. They drive tons of miles. The vehicle itself is in great condition but the drivetrain is shot. EV conversion makes a lot of sense because you replace the worn out drivetrain with a drivetrain that should last a lot longer, be more energy efficient, and put in a range extender generator to make sure they can keep working past the battery charge. It is just great!

Both of you commenters are correct. There is indeed an up front cost increase that is a tough sell. Also the hope and expectation is that the reduced fuel costs over the life of the vehicle will more than cover the up front cost.

6:15 I have been following Edison Motors for a while: and this is the first time I have seen confirmation that it supports CCS1 fast charging. I think they maybe over-emphasize how useful the generator is. Edit: and first time I saw the generator running too!
@ccibinel

The generator allows the entire work day when it is mid haul and allows the vehicle to travel to potentially remote sites. Ideally it will see little or no use in many locations but for some it will be part of the daily process. They need it to allow the required flexibility but for some vocational trucks pure electric could work but then its a small segment of an already small segment.

Theyve said in the past that there would be nothing stopping someone from just replacing the generator with more batteries, but a generator is important for what theyre looking for with logging where they wont have access to a charger for their 12+ hr shift

Ladies and gentlemen. I'm a long time preacher of hybrid electric as the answer to fuel mileage mandates. If it works in a locomotive. Now that the components to make it work on a truck scale are available. Why not?

Diesel electric have been powering train etc engines since the early 1900s and replaced steam steam locomotives by the late 1950s and then completely by the 1960s. Today ships are changing to diesel electric and LNG (liquid natural gas) with more coming online monthly. The USA Navy uses nuclear power to create steam to drive turbines that generate electricity and propulsion.

There is nothing wrong with powering trucks with renewable diesel as long as the renewable diesel is not made from food crops or whole trees. Note: Using soybean oil to produce renewable diesel does not count as using a food crops because the intended product from soybeans is soybean meal for use as livestock feed, therefore soybean oil is a type of residual biomass.

Most industrial applications when very high torque is needed they use diesel generator and electric engine to move the truck. I'm thinking in giant lifters (200 ton at once), giant mining trucks, diesel trains, etc. So it amaze me why isn't that tech more prevalent in normal cars, trucks, etc
