In any design language, you face two options: 1. Continue to iterate, try to differentiate, improve. 2. Continue to iterate, try to retain iconography, maintain status quo. You get a phone that is slightly better each year, with very little change. That's along the same lines as... cars, home electronics, jewelry, and clothes. Phones are more 'personal fashion item' than anything right now, and that's why you pay a premium for incremental iteration annually. I prefer to evaluate handsets based on their individual merits, and S24 ultra stands out as a premium version of any note/S series before it. Then there are phones like the Motorola Edge 2024 that follow Galaxy s9+ design language with an updated software skin and 2024 hardware. I still have in use today: LG V30 LG V60 + dual screen Moto Edge 2022/2024 A53 5g Z Flip 5 At $299 + tax the 2024 edge really stands out as a great smartphone. Too bad Motorola is being targeted by the US DOJ and might not be able to sell phones here anymore. Get one while you can (originally $550).
@afanasibushmanov746320 күн бұрын
Yeah but it's an award for phone of the year not the most improved phone of the year. I think there's a fine line between innovation and going down the route of gimmicks and change for the sake of change the way LG did for example. The LG G2 was a good phone, but they started adding more and more gimmicks as time went on to the point where LG became irrelevant and no one wanted to buy their phones. I think LG would still be making phones to this day if they would have just made incremental upgrades to the G2 instead of change for the sake of change and gimmicks the way they did after the LG G2.

That was the argument last year, as well. One that I made. Because while the Pixel 8 Pro was most improved, I do believe the S23 Ultra edged it out. The feeling is very different this year. Samsung stayed almost completely still while Google took another giant leap. Samsung has some glaring flaws, and you could easily cancel out the Galaxy's better gaming with the Pixel's superior camera.
@afanasibushmanov746320 күн бұрын
@StevealiciousTech what would you say are their glaring flaws? I can't think of any. I know you mentioned the camera app, but I actually like the camera app on my A55. I'm sure the Ultra's is slightly different because it's higher end, but I think the camera app is good. The two glaring weaknesses on the A55 that I could think of are the display being too drab even with the vividness all the way up and the video editing app (Studio) is horrible. Maybe it's just horrible on my device because I don't have a high end phone, but Samsung definitely needs to have a better video editor. As for the display, I would imagine that it doesn't have the vividness issues that the A55 has.

I think you are confusing 'most improved' with 'phone of the year'
Samsung's main camera issues, haunting them years ago, is criminally slow shutter speed, and often focus issues, making their camera experience useless for anything else than taking pictures of static objects. Night photography is plagued by purple-ish tint, tons of noise and overall, lack of detail (other brands like Vivo, Honor, Oppo are doing a much better job). Daily pictures are oversharpened, with hdr results subpar, compared, again, to the likes of Vivo or Honor, for example. Lets talk about their screens, which are the worst in the industry, by far, when it comes to not implementing dc dimming at all, and having pwm values at 480hz only (and that's only for s24 lineup, other models have 60 to 240hz pwm as max values), no eye care at all (also, tnx to Samsung, Pixel and iPhones have exactly the same screens). Ridiculous at this point. Shipping your flagship models, other than ultra, with different chipset for different markets is the biggest FU to potential users ever. Samsung's battery tech is no match for the Chinese, which is the best in the world atm. Slow charging speeds, across the range, is way passed annoying. It's completely unacceptable. Exynos has been lagging behind Snapdragon, from day 1. It never kept up nor pulled ahead, yet they insist on using it on as much models (markets) as they possible can, even though they get, yearly, complaints from their actual customers. All those issues Pixel phones have are caused by the Exynos chipset inside them (Tensor only uses different gpu cores, everything else is the same). Weaker 4g and 5g signal coverage, wifi connectivity issues all stem from using Exynos. If you use any other phone, with the latest Snapdragon chip, at the same time, you will easily notice the difference. To make matter even worse, Mediatek came a long way, and has been outpeforming Exynos, in the last 4 or 5 years also. Do Samsung care? Hell nah, they just keep stuffing their own crap and call it a day. I can't support a company that has such a reckless consumer philosophy. If you can, and do, that's on you.

Okay but what exactly are the Pixel and Oneplus innovating on? If anything they're catching up to the industry leader, yes. But it really feels like Pixels have been bad for so long, people are more impressed with the fact there wasn't some big hardware or software scandal this year. Like what does the Pixel and Oneplus do that the Galaxy doesn't already do? And I'm talking pure specs because the photo stuff is subjective. Maybe my school of thought is different because growing up getting good grades were what I was 'supposed' to do. I look at smartphones much the same way. They do all these things well and for the money they're charging they better. Now if the argument is that Samsung is charging too much for what they offer then that's a totally different conversation.

OnePlus goes pound for pound on performance, OxygenOS 15 is running well and is hundreds less, with a gorgeous display, better haptics, and competitive cameras. The Pixel 9 Pro XL is better in a number of areas and worse in a number of them as well. Again, it's preference, as I say, you like the S24 Ultra? Cool, but I expect more for 1,400, and Samsung has ignored the camera situation for far too long. You can't keep running back the same things over and over and expect someone not to finally catch you.

I tried each of the flagships for 2 weeks then sent them back. A couple months later, I went back and bought the OnePlus 12. Hardware is off the charts, Oxygen OS is great, no bloatware of Samsung. I did like the Pixel, but the OnePlus pound for pound is better.

OnePlus offers better battery life, faster wire charging, faster wireless charging, 80 watt charging brick actually in the box. I used to use nothing but Samsung's, oneplus phones are faster with the same hardware. OnePlus cameras are now better than Samsung cameras in my opinion because I like my photos to look almost like what my eyes see I don't need all that fancy saturation and color enhancement. The only thing Samsung beats OnePlus on in my opinion are updates. And that's not a factor for me because I never plan on keeping a phone for 7 years. But the best part is you get all of this for $500 less. Samsung loses to OnePlus Everytime in my opinion.

You may not play games with your phone but millions of people do and pixel phones are already the worst flagships in that department. A good example for smartphone of the year would be vivo 200x pro Which is among the top 5 best smartphones in terms of performance, has a huge battery and way better battery life than any Samsung, apple or Google phone, has a better camera and comes a couple hundred bucks cheaper too with a fast charger and case in the box That phone deserves smartphone of the year not a pixel phone which lacks severely in one important category which is gaming and is no match for Chinese phones in terms of battery life, charging speed and cameras

While I think Samsung has stagnated a bit and Chinese companies are catching them up now, I'd still say the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is the best phone of the year. It may not be the absolute best in any category anymore, especially as October releases are effectively a generation ahead, but it's still just all around top tier in every category, which I'd argue no other phone is as much as the Galaxy Ultra. It does nothing wrong. It has no drawbacks. It has tonnes of features other phones don't have. Yes the cameras could be improved, and in fact I think the S23U takes better pics than S24U, especially at higher zoom, but it's still top tier. Google Pixel's device is good in that nothing bad happened this year lol. But yes, Samsung has stagnated since 2021 or 2022. And they ARE in danger of falling behind now. If the S25U is just more of the same, I feel other companies like OnePlus and Vivo will pull ahead.

It's true that designing the S24 Ultra as smartphone of the year would encourage Samsung to continue down the path of slowness, technological laziness that they have been committed to for a number of years. On the other hand, to say that the Pixel 9 Pro XL is the smartphone of the year is ridiculous, nowhere in the world do we give the 1st place to someone because they went from 7/20 to 11/20 while the others are at least 15/20 🤷🏽♂️

Unfortunately, neither Samsung nor Apple need to change unless Americans decide to massively buy Pixel devices. It's not about tech, it's about business. I love my S23 Ultra, and I've been using Android all my life. I thought of switching to the Vivo X200 Pro for its camera, but ultimately decided on the iPhone 16 Pro Max to have a taste of iOS (last one I used was the 6s Plus). Samsung's flagships are dependable (to an extent) but also boring. The shutter lag didn't bother me for a while but lately I have been taking more videos and taking photos in rush situations, and the Samsung shots always came blurry. Here in Asia, (except if you're in Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia), the Pixels aren't really offered officially and tends to heat up even more often here than in North America (hehe the tropical climate isn't for Pixels). iOS is very annoying 😂 as an Android guy that is used to proper control of his device, a lot of actions in the iPhone take more steps, and you have no choice but to submit to how Apple wants you to do things, BUT I don't mind the extra steps since I am used to taking hours tinkering on Android (oh especially in the bootloader unlocking, custom ROM, and rooting days) and going the extra mile to set up things no matter how long they take. The effort for me at least, is worth the reliable videos and photos that the iPhone takes. Worth the more consistent software support. Worth the more consistent photo quality between apps. Worth the apps that devs seem to put on iOS first. And things are looking even better with sideloading and third party stores. (But I'll never stop complaining about the iPhone's VERY disappointing keyboard and lack of a universal clipboard). I'll probably get a Pixel 9 as a secondary device though. I refuse to completely succumb to the Apple ecosystem 😂

I think we’ve been at the point for a while when it comes to design, it’s a rectangle slab and where/how are you going to place the cameras. If people want radically different design language they’re going to have to go OnePlus, Nothing etc. The big OEMs aren’t going to deviate too far from what makes their cash cow recognizable. They really have to make the software stand out and make the user experience unique to differentiate I think.

I agree with most of what you said. I was a Samsung user for years, I just could not justify any more buying the same phone year after year for more money every year. Now I'm on OnePlus and happy. For me the phone of the year is the OnePlus 12. You get the same flagship hardware, their cameras in my opinion are now in the top five, I know that's personal preference but still. Yeah they're updates are not quite as long as Samsung and Google but I don't plan on ever keeping a phone for 7 years so that's not a factor for me. Now let's get to what OnePlus does better. Faster wire charging, faster wireless charging, the 80 watt charger actually in the box. But the deciding factor has to be, you get the same flagship hardware, you get more than enough updates for the life of the phone, great cameras, better charging, charger in the box, great performance, but you get all of that for $500 less. OnePlus beats Samsung, Google and Apple in my opinion because when you get to the bottom line, you get everything that the other guys offer plus more like faster charging than anyone else for far less.

I'm a pixel user, but I am a little confused at how people are so happy with pixel this year. Best as I can tell they raise the price, didn't have a storage bump and made it look a little more like an iPhone. I mean the modem and the silicon are slightly improved but it's still the Samsung foundry. Just bizarre that this is the year that it sort of wins over the media. When the Pixel 7 pro, for instance, is almost identical in functionality. And you can buy it for 300 bucks.

In a year and a half, I've gone from my LG G8 to my Pixel 6a, to a OnePlus 12 and now on the S24U. The LG G8 became borderline unusable after ther android 12 update. The Pixel 6a was much better but the poor battery life, overheating and horrible fingerprint sensor soured the experience (tbc, it's still a great phone for the price and i keep it as a backup). I got the OP12 and while i absolutely loved the hardware, the software wasn't nearly as polished and their customer support is non-existent. I ended up returning the device to Amazon after finding some dead pixels. I got the S24U on an amazing sale (paid $750 for the 512gb model) and while the battery life and charging speed isn't as good as the OP12, the software experience has been wayyyy better. I do agree that Samsung needs to innovate since they aren't in Apple's position where they can just coast. The camera isn't as impresive as I was hoping (the main strength it has is its zoom). More and more people in the US are moving to iOS and it's becoming more difficult to justify staying with Android in general.

@ You're entitled to your opinion. I don't always agree with his views on devices, but he's one of the best out there. His numbers prove it.

I just want my S23 ultra to not take garbage photos. Gcam beats Samsung's processing 99% of the time. Such an update will never happen because Samsung things.

Looks like there's a lot of hurt feelings from Samsung Knights on this thread.😂

@mrkring1526 Probably spoken by someone who's never watched his videos. The same as people who say Apple sucks, or Google sucks, but have never used their phones.😂

Wow never listened to something so pathetic in all my days . This guy can't provide us with anything where as near a samsung s24 ultra tell you what lets go back 20 years see what you put up with then .
@StevealiciousTech19 күн бұрын
What does that even mean? Samsung is telling you it needs to do better...are you saying the company is wrong for saying that? Falling sales are ok?
@michaelcorcoran876819 күн бұрын
Dude it's just a phone. People have opinions. Shouldn't be getting this upset about it

Must've missed however many articles I've written complaining, including just last week about iOS 18.

This is frustrating. I criticize Samsung a lot always from the perspective of an Android user. I don't even consider iPhones I'm cross-shopping Samsung with OnePlus or Google or Xiaomi or whatever. My criticisms are often that Samsung does too much stuff similar to Apple. It's not a binary.

Samsung has been going backwards since the Note 9. In their rush to copy Apple they have removed features while increasing the price. Galaxy and iPhone are turning into generic copies of one another. Both seem to have lost their innovative edge. Most certainly Steve Jobs' passing marked the end of Apple's innovation. Coast phase is ending for that company and sinking iPhone sales may be indicative of this. As far as Samsung: 1. Bring back expandable SD storage. 2. Bring back the headphone jack. 3. Bring back the FM radio.
