Not a very big field. Kind of surprising considering how many breeding farms there are in the United States and how many foals are born each year.

they only register about 15-20,000 new foals each year in the united states. many of which never run due to just not having an affinity for it and get retired to secondary jobs. and these races are much higher tier races for 3+ year olds, a lot of the less talented horses in this crop have been weeded out and very few fit requirements to make the field. It is not so surprising, and when you compare that to the 70,000 some quarter horse foals registered last year in the US and it stops seeming like such a large number. jockey club does a decent job at keeping the number down and their horses in good homes, cant say the same for AQHA or other similar organizations unfortunately
