I love how every one of these GBC mod videos I watch showcases Pokemon Crystal, which is actually the reason I'm modding my old grape GBC. Successfully replaced my speaker and a dozen cart batteries without killing anything, so I figured I'd treat myself to my first major project build (most of the parts should hopefully be in by Saturday). IPS kit + case, some clear buttons/membranes, LED flex board, LiPo battery kit, amp board, and some replacement caps because supposedly those are good to change out. Going to be super tricked out by the time I'm done. Yours is the only tutorial I've seen that talked about the possibilities of shorts, so with all the stuff I'm throwing in I guess I'd better be extra cautious about that. Retro Game Repair shop has an amazing selection of stuff, but I also wanted to shout out Handheld Legend for having a lot of product overlap, but also having a lot of smaller mods and accessories that RGR doesn't. Between the two, as far as I can tell you can get a pretty complete catalog of hardware mods, stickers, shells etc. To anyone on the fence about trying stuff like this; get a cheap soldering kit online and practice with some Gameboy batteries or a cheap soldering project. It's really not as difficult as it seems once you've gotten some practice, and being able to mod/repair your old stuff is a really satisfying skill to have.

The quickest, cheapest and easiest way to learn soldering is to solder a cube out of wires of different thickness. You can even use paper-clips for that, mix them up with different sizes of wire, use spare metal parts, what ever you have lying around.

Hey question I bought the kit and installed the 2.0 version, ribbon said 2.7 version so it pops up a display when I hold start and select. But I can't seem to change the different color options for each word just the whole thing to a different color? Any ideas on the new version? Ty
@JakeSimmons Жыл бұрын
You can’t make each word different colors, they’ll all be one color. When it highlights “game” and “boy,” hitting start or select will change the centering of the display. When color is highlighted, you can cycle through all of the colors with start and select. Then holding down both buttons on the color you want will set the color for the whole logo. I’m a little confused by your comment so I hope that helps. Otherwise I’d need a visual to help

Does anyone know what kind of wires are included with the screen to solder? Mine did not come with enough to solder the touch sensor!
@JakeSimmons2 жыл бұрын
The sensor should be built into the ribbon cable if you’re using the same kit as me. It’s the black square next to the part that goes into the game boy motherboard. The yellow touch pad is there just in case the built in one is defective. You should also be able to solder the other touch pad down without the need for the wire and still have it touch the top of the shell

Hey Jake, your videos inspired me to get in into modding, just got my materials, and ordered my LED v2 GBC screen. I was wondering, how to you figure pricing when you sell your modded GB's?
@JakeSimmons2 жыл бұрын
I mostly base it around the cost of goods. I make about the same amount of profit on every sale. The price differences really come down to the different models and if it’s a shell with a design on it. And then I add the value of my work to it

Hi Is it necessary cut the pins of mb?
@JakeSimmons Жыл бұрын
I’ve been doing it for a very long time because the first time I ever did this mod, those pins were shorting on the ribbon cable for this kit. I’ve been doing so long that I was curious if it was still necessary or if it was just a coincidence that I had that issues on my first attempt. I still covered everything in kapton tape and those pins poked right through it and it was shorting again. Tried it twice with 2 different boards, same thing. Some people don’t do it and I don’t know how they do it but from my experience, I recommend just taking the extra 2 minutes to do it so you don’t have to open it up again once you’re done. Also, make sure all of the pin clippings are off the board. Those little leftovers can also cause shorts!

I don't know man maybe I'm the odd one out but I feel like it's blasphemy to replace the screen. I know technically it's superior in every way but I feel like it's putting a brand new Corvette motor in a classic Chevy. It's cool to most people but to purists they kind of cringe.
