In chess, The Game of the Century is a chess game played between 26-year-old Donald Byrne and 13-year-old Bobby Fischer in the Rosenwald Memorial Tournament in New York City on October 17, 1956, which Fischer won. The competition took place at the Marshall Chess Club. It was nicknamed "The Game of the Century" by Hans Kmoch in Chess Review. Kmoch wrote, "The following game, a stunning masterpiece of combination play performed by a boy of 13 against a formidable opponent, matches the finest on record in the history of chess prodigies." In Gruenfeld defense 13-year-old Fischer sacrifices his queen which allows him to make use of windmill tactics. After grabbing more material, and getting a very active piece play, Fischer confidently realizes his advantage and even mates his opponent! A spectacular game which is truly "the game of the century"!

Out of respect for the young Bobby, Donald Byrne played on and allowed him to give checkmate. True sportsmanship on one of the most brilliant games ever.

@@philipgerlach7074Byrne desperately hoped for a backrank checkmate. Fischer once did blunder a won game where he missed a backrank threat. So you never know. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGjWfISVormHl5Y

Wow. An excellent game. The queen wasn’t able to do very much because it was overwhelmed by all the pieces Fischer had. As powerful as the queen is, it can’t do much when overwhelmed. The black army seemed very impressive and was kind of like a boa constrictor after the queen sacrifice. The pieces were tightly coordinated, when Byrne’s army was getting weaker they loosened, and then they tightened again right before “death” (checkmate).

Fisher had 2785 rating in 1972. Almost a half of the century ago his rating was higher than today's top ten super GMs! Karpov had 2780 and Tal 2705. Fisher also had the highest percentage of win rate in history of chess - he won 72.3% of all his games in chess database. He lost only 85 games in his chess career. He was the greatest chess genius of all time concerning just these tree facts.

This game shows that a queen is not enough to win a game. Sometimes a bishop is more valuable than a queen, a rook is more valuable than a queen. This game shows really that EVERYONE IS EQUAL.

In my opinion, if black plays Qxc3, then Qxc5, dxc5, Bxc3 is possible. Black cannot win a piece. White probably wanted to win a Queen and he immediately took the Queen
