Hey ya'll! I hope everyone's doing okay. This is my fav video I ever made, honestly. So I hope ya'll share it around. Another video will go public on the 7th, and that's a pretty special project as well, so look forward to it. And remember, I upload pretty frequently these days, so turn on the bell and check on the channel for new vids every few weeks if you don't wanna miss my stuff. Have a good one, stay safe, look out for each other. Black Lives Matter.

2:30 Roo from the now retired series 16-bit Gems explained how the shift in release date of DQ games to Sundays only for a few releases was an internal Enix decision but lead to the rumors of Japan outlawing tentpole game releases. It was never law, but it was so common a rumor that it made its way to countless early online game communities. Edit: Also, check out NESCardinality's GDQ run of DQ1. It is amazing. 11:50 That is literally the occupation of my most recent D&D character. 12:45 I can't blame the problem mentioned in the overlay text on Dragon Quest. If it had a perfect clean translation, it wouldn't be cryptic BS. Legend of Zelda, however, would still be cryptic BS (as shown in the retranslated rereleases).

KZbin finally put one of these videos in my feed again. Glad it did. DQ is one of my favorite series and the video was a great watch. Feel like the classic DQ trilogy hasn't aged as well as the other titles but they are still great in their own regard.

Textbox: "Ah, hello there." Me: "....General Kenobi?" SNES DQ1 is the only DQ game I ever played and beaten. Overworld theme always mildly confused me when I played, because my brain would go "...E.V.O?" For context, EVO: Search for Eden is another SNES Enix-published game that Sugiyama scored, and its ocean/starting area has a music theme that is very similar: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJbLe2OId5iogtk

As a kid, I never got into Dragon Quest. I knew it was popular in Japan but I always played Final Fantasy instead. I picked up Dragon Quest 8 one day in my teens, played it then sold it because I thought it was boring. As an adult, I re-bought it, played it and beat it. It was a nice adventure in a massive fantasy world. I do agree that the grinding (or in my case grinding for gold and running in circles until the alchemy pot dings everytime I needed to make a item.) halts the pacing of the game. If I didn't grind at all, my playtime would probably be a lot lower but I would've also been too low leveled for the bosses. It seems like that's just the way Dragon Quest is. Old school grindfests and exploration. I wouldn't have it any other way though. Hope you're doing well, Emcee!

I played through the NES version of this one, and I gotta say, once you get past the more clunky menus and general gameplay, nearly everything good about this game's design was there from the start, even in the NES version you can absolutely beat it without a guide, you'll just have to grind longer lol Brilliant video btw! I love this game to bits, though I'm quite partial to the GBC version.

I really like your comparison of grinding to going on a hunt, I never considered it that way before but I'm definitely going to from now on! I've only ever played DQIX, and I tend to make my way through already-cleared dungeons if I need to beef up my team, though I've made a habit of taking a golem-hunting quest back to back for some quick money. Applying that model to regular grinding sounds fun!

I heard for years that this game was the granddaddy of JRPGs, and they weren't wrong! It's a classic that every serious fan of video games needs to play. You really have that sense of adventure as you have to wander the countryside and find clues for how to enter the dragon lord's keep and defeat him. That's not nostalgia talking. I played for the first time last year on my phone, and it still holds up. If you've got $2.00, then see for yourself!

I'm not joking when I say that opening message saved my life. This was right after seeing the George Floyd funeral, and I wasn't sure what to do. That message seemed almost like it spoke to me. I wish I could just give you a hug in person, because this came at JUST the right time. I've been playing Dragon Quest on my computer, but I might dive deep into the game after this. You paint a great picture of it, and highlighted everything I enjoy about it as I've been playing it.

The hints might have been more cryptic on the original versions, but I beat both 1+2 on the gameboy when I was 7 or 8 so I don't think they were too impossible to understand.

I believe the gameboy ports were more based on the snes remake's reworks, from what I can tell. Makes sense, since the snes one came out several years before the GB versions.

Thank you for answering the question that's been puzzling me for so many years. I honestly had no idea what was so special about Dragon Quest. It felt like Japan was just stuck in this inescapable nostalgia bubble. But now, I'm feeling tempted to jump in and try it.

Funny, I just played DQ 1 & 2 like a couple of weeks ago. Totally loved the first one, basically I had the same experience as you did! Didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did! Really curious about your opinion on the second one. I don't know exactly how I got through it. It wasn't all bad ofc but it missed most of the charm of the first one. Oh yeah, great video btw (as usual) :D

Dragon Quest came out in 1985 and it started a franchise that is far more popular in Japan than it is in the rest of the world. Only a year later in 1986 Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei was released and it started a franchise that is far more popular in Japan that it is in the rest of the world. Funny how that works.

Only 8 or so hours? Then the grinding probably wouldn't bother me at all. Unlike a lot of people, I'm much more attuned to grinding that requires actual thought and effort in the first place. A lot of other people can find it (understandably) tiring, but I always prefer that to it being mindless instead. So if it's grinding that requires effort, and I'm not spending a literal half-dozen to two dozen hours doing so, count me in!

I'm sorry what... ? Dragon Quest is... hard? ........ That's it, you can all give me your gamer cards! If you consider the easy mode Snes remake of Dragon Quest hard, heaven forbid you play Mega Man 2! It's the same with the NES version. It's just a drudge to grind EXP since you need to be Lv 30 in that one in order to win and just f- that. But the Snes version? Piece of cake. Absolutely a piece of cake. The GBA version is based on the Snes version and the GBA version was the first I played - again, I had no problems. Sure I died a few times, but it wasn't hard. It was never hard. I feel that you... forget.. that Dragon Quest is the direct result of them playing Wizardry, and Ultima, and wanting to make their own RPG. Also, that thing about Society grinding to an halt... That's not exactly true. That's all I have to add to this. Good video.
@EmceeProphIt

I mean it's easier than 80% of mainstream RPGs I've played. It's not hard next to non-persona SMT, 7th Saga or Etrian Odyssey. But it's certainly more 'fuck you' than most FF games or even most DQ games, or Trails games I've played. I'm speaking relative to the whooole dang genre I guess. What most people's exposure to the genre is, and what kind of challenge would probably hinder them. I didn't die once in this game outside of getting footage of death, an the golem death, for what that's worth. It's more threatening, and gameovers actually happen. That's more than I can say for most games I play~

I regard JRPGs as a distinct genre. And there were actually other JRPG-ish games before it. But it is the codifier of the genre. That's not really a matter of opinion, that's just how history unfolded.
