I would disagree; Wizardry is the truest OG and massively popular in Japan, I'd even say EO probably got a lot of its systems from the old Wiz games.
@KaitoverMoon5 ай бұрын
@@Jogernog Of course it used to be, but that was in the 80s. There are very few developers or anime directors today that remember fondly of a literally 40 year old game and take inspiration from it. Etrian Odyssey just happens to be a more palatable introduction into what the Japanese populace has found to be more appealing to their ideal asthetic. You're quite likely to find more Japanese people who played the DS as a kid and know about Etrian Odyssey than those who know about Wizardry that have probably literally died off.

@@KaitoverMoon I would disagree. You say Wiz is a 40 year old game, but really it's been a series since 85', never mind the fact that the series was acquired by a Japanese company and had games on all sorts of hardware, including the Gameboy and Super Famicom. Plus, you say it like old games haven't influenced modern media, but FF and DQ are as old as Wizardry and Ultima, and they're still highly influential, never mind the fact that Wiz was also so popular in Japan that a Japanese company acquired it and created a whole list of Japan only Spin-offs, which later became the main series when the franchise died in the west... To finish off, I think most anime directors and manga authors are likely to have been born in the late 80's to early nineties and be around their forties/thirties, statistically speaking, it makes sense that they would know of the old school dungeon crawling games... Hell I bet you can find traces of Ultima DNA in stuff like dungeon Meshi (who btw used the exact same resurrection system and premise as the first Wizardry game, down to the literal mad wizard.) (also: twitter.com/hokutoandy/status/1758229667562270886)
@theinktician2 ай бұрын
@@Jogernog ngl I live in Japan, and the main influence is certainly neither of these. It's almost Always another anime that came before that inspired another. For instance, the sudden surge of "I'm in a VR game world" anime after Sword Art Online released. Obviously .hack// came much earlier than Sword Art, but to say it was the driving influence due to it's long standing popularity as a series that's continued for decades is reaching and taking away from the context of recency. Not that you were doing that exactly. I'm just stating an example for reference. Basically what I'm saying is that what you're saying sounds kinda like that.

The classes themselves are also quite unique. I’ll have to try this out next time I take a crack at untold 2. EOV holds a special place in my heart for its classes (and race system), and Nexus has the biggest selection alongside multi-classing. And this is why I love theorycrafting and min-maxing. For dumb stuff like this. Normal people would NEVER think "oh yeah, a bunch of medics should be used for damage output!", but when you approach a game by looking at the actual numbers and systems instead of "what seems obviously intended", you end up finding stuff like this. There was actually a game I played a long time ago, couldn't even tell you what it was called anymore, but the best damage output was literally to use exclusively terrible cursed equipment that reduced healing values, because you could get something like -500% healing, which caused healing magic to basically deal 4x damage to enemies, when the like second highest damage multiplier was like 250% and had WAY worse damage calculation modifiers due to healing ignoring defense values. So you could basically just straight up one-shot most enemies just by casting a single healing spell on them. And it's hilariously dumb stuff like that, that I love finding and using in games. Whether it's weird interactions, like seen here, or ridiculous exploits like getting the AI in a Total War game to basically pay you free money for nothing, or any other form of "abnormal" gameplay that results in "illogical" playstyles and whatnot, it's stuff like this that makes me genuinely have fun with most games. "Figuring out and mastering the stupid strats".

another game that had this was Might and Magic 7. Healers (clerics) could cast Dark Magic school spells that were the highest in terms of damage output. Once I noticed this I rerolled my game with only clerics and 1 sorceror (to complement their utility skills - oh by the way that guy could cast Dark Magic too) and breezed my way through the game. One inconvenience was that I had to tank hits from traps because none of my characters had trap disarming skills. btw dark magic came into play pretty late in the game and before that you just had to rely on damage buffs to the regular weapon of clerics, which made your damage not-great-not-terrible, but since you could heal yourself and clerics had shields and decent armor, it was still a breeze to play through.

Makes me miss the old Asda Story MMO. There were dumb shenanigans like "Explosion of Light" 'DPS' build as a tank -- as a mage class - and a mage that specialized in support to boot. Which was funny back in the day, when you'd run out of quests to level so all that was left was grinding. So the meta was to gather mobs and set them on a tank that dealt splash damage to slowly kill them all, and constantly pull mobs as they spawned to more efficiently gather EXP. That tank would be a warrior class. Normally. This one time, our warrior tank had to go off somewhere, so we were left with two healers and my support build with slightly worse healing. So I offered to be a tank with the passive skill "Explosion of Light" - which reflected damage at 200% damage taken at a 10% chance to all enemies. Doesn't sound that great, but when you have a swarm of mobs attacking all at once with lots of hits... that passive procs pretty fast. Let's just say the damage efficiency was... almost as good as having that tank there with 3 healers keeping him alive. Except we struggled on healing with me constantly being almost dead while spamming MP potions and everyone spamming heals off of CD. I feel slightly retarded now, since that was ages ago and I've only just realized we were short one person that would have made the situation less stressful -- another healer. It was a party of 4 before, but we were now tackling the grind as a party of 3... of *course* it was going to be more difficult =_=;; Unfortunately, they ended up nerfing that 200% reflect damage to 100% because they decided to add PvP to a PvE game and people were complaining about the potential of getting 1-shot at a 10% chance if they set up a wombo combo for a super high damage shot and get reflect damage countered. Oh, and the original game got taken down and the new one has a different skill system, so you don't get to mix and match silly skills like that together anymore =/ No more super support healing with damage shields, and I don't even know if they still have that reflect damage skill either... There was another thing where they removed the aggro from one of the party shielding skills that gave HP regen as well because people "found the skill too difficult to use" =_=;; except I needed it as a tank mage to pull aggro .-.;; it was fun while it lasted D=

I played several MMOs where I made healers unkillable gods. Healers are so hard to balance that a single person who knows code limitations can destroy the game. In one MMO I soloed a world boss in 2 hours that killed 200+ players attacking it at the same time and they lost after 4 hours of non stop dying. Another game I was challenged in PVP several times and each time I destroyed the opposing team. One time I got told to stop running and take it serious. I stupid turned around and killed 3 chasing players in seconds leaving everyone screaming "What happened?!" In voice chat. Another player came up to my character and did an ultimate combo that should have done 5 times my health in damage, it did 10% of my health and she said "Oh shit!" right before she died. My favorite MMO I was able to shake off one hit kill moves. I usually soloed so nobody knew about it until I got into a group and this boss kept wiping us. The last fight I set my character up as my god slayer build, my personal title for it, and as soon as the boss used it's kill move on the tank and killed him I stepped in. The next instakill move came and everyone thought my character was going to die, but it barely did any damage. The voice chat lost it! After the fight they were bragging to everyone in game about how we just beat the unkillable event boss. Best part is nobody believed us so someone uploaded a video to KZbin and it was the first kill of that boss. Even the game devs couldn't explain it. The video isn't up anymore because my friends channel got deleted after a few years sadly, but it was epic.
