Episode Notes:
1. The story of Sonic Xtreme is brutal. You should look it up and read just how bad things were mishandled and just how petty some of the squabbling was.
2. Greendog is included on the off chance I missed something somewhere about its development. Interactive Designs definitely did the work, I'm just not sure what STI had to do with it.
3. Games captured via the Mega SG.
4. STI had a number of cancelled projects thanks to their Sonic endeavors. Sonic took priority over everything.
5. Yuji Naka was famously difficult to get along with. So vindictive was this dude, he actually threatened to quit Sega if STI was allowed to use the Nights engine for Sonic Xtreme. The fate of the company be damned.
6. Sonic Spinball is without question STI's weakest game IMO. I understand people love it, but man I couldn't stand it.

Yeah very appreciated and happy to see other Sega focused channels now that im really digging into their deeper library and history. More popular gaming history/discussion channels tend to be way too nintendo centric, and i get why but it's tiring and a disservice to the great work of these other companies throughout the years. Now to look for some more channels that dive deeper into Capcom focus lol

Altima I disagree, this the one and only exception that I know of where Gems actually shines. The heavy grungy 90s guitar works perfectly as it is and I wouldn't prefer any other way. Subjectivity is the case here it seems. A couple of the songs even have some acoustic guitar notes that work surprisingly well.

Kid Chameleon is memorable especially because despite being a relatively minor title it was distinguished with its own comic strip in the UK Egmont-Fleetway "Sonic the Comic". Alongside Decap Attack it was perhaps the most obscure title STC picked up. I wrote a follow-up for STC Online years ago and several pages were drawn but editorial decided to scrap it.

Great video and they were a loss to the Saturn, it still baffles me why very few Megadrive games came forward to the Saturn in any capacity especially Streets of Rage. As for Sonic, I always felt that the stage in Sonic Jam was actually a good starting point for building a 3D Sonic game for the system. Just imagining a world where the Saturn sold better and thinking what Sega Technical Institute, Sonic Team, Am2 and Team Andromeda could have come up with. Such a missed opportunity

Nice video. Keep them comming . How about one with the difference between MegaDrive and MegaCD games, when same title was released for both systems, like Eternal Champions. Being a big Sonic fan. I dont blame you for your lack of interest in Sonic Spinball. I tried it many times, giving it a chance. But it just, IMHO, aint a goid Sonic game 😅 But I must say, the way you did the special stage in Sonic 3, that kinda hurt. Never got any of the rings. And you walked over all the blue balls. You need to surround them.

Great video! I started at STI as an environment and character artist just as they were starting work on Kid Chameleon. It was a great place to work and a group of very talented people… until it wasn’t. After the teams split things got weird. STI had several games that, had they been able to finish them, could have gone on to be A+ titles; ie Kinetic/Jester, Astropede, Spinny & Spike. By the time I left in 1995 the writing was on the wall that STI’s future was seriously in doubt. (And it was definitely no longer an enjoyable place to work) I have no idea why Green Dog is said to have been done by STI?!?! I have NO memory of it and I was at STI from 1990-1995.

We have at our fingertips the ability to access a wealth of knowledge that every generation before us never had and somehow I didn't know all these games were made by STI which just burns my pee...wait a minute. But seriously, I know some people don't like Kid Chameleon or Sonic Spinball but they were and still are some of my favorite games on the system with Chameleon being one of the first games I played on the Genesis when we would rent it (yep, renting consoles was a thing for the younger audience). Thanks once again for pumping out the content, it's keeping me entertained through a rough patch of recovering from surgery and others through the quarantines, stay safe and healthy and remember to not burn yourself out. Also, EVERYONE, you are allowed to like and dislike games, everyone has different tastes in gaming (I for one LOVE FMV games) so if you see a game you don't personally like just be cool :)

I feel like Sonic Spinball had a lot of potential, and could have made a solid spin-off series for Sonic. If it wasn't rushed in 3 months, it could have had more levels and more fluid gameplay. If you turn the game speed on in options to fast, it actually makes it a bit better. This should have been the default speed.

Speaking of Sonic 2, Tails was introduced in the 8-bit version of the game for the Master System and the Game Gear. Tails didn't become playable not until the 16-bit version of Sonic 2 for the Genesis/Mega Drive. In other words, 8-bit Sonic 2 is Sonic 2, Part 1 and 16-bit Sonic 2 is Sonic 2, Part 2. And speaking of Michael Jackson composing music for the Sonic 3 series, there was no evidence that proved that he was a pedophile. Jackson was proven innocent in court.

Hell, I'm one of those ppl that really liked Sonic Spinball growing up! I even thought the soundtrack was baddass! I especially loved the Boss theme, which was one of my favorite tracks for the entire system! Yeah, I know the game gets a lot of hate, and I'm not in love with it or anything, but I liked it a lot when I was younger. Hell, I even owned the Game Gear version of the game and played the hell out of that one too on car trips and such! Haven't played it since, but I see no reason to believe that my love for it has changed. I also don't really see how the gameplay is repetitive, considering each Pinball board is completely unique and has extremely unique ways to get through each one. It's deeper than your average Pinball game where you just bounce the ball around for points, it plays more like an adventure game with Pinball mechanics as you actually have to venture through the robust and large courses. It's got a lot more going for it than an average Pinball game does for sure, and is quite rewarding each time you are able to make it to a Chaos Emerald. It feels pretty darn unique to me & deserves more love imo.

By the way X did you see the little 12 minute vid from the guys putting together “Streets of Rage 4” with the interview of Yuzo Koshiro and how he approached the music he created for the game based upon his influences and experiences creating the music for Streets of Rage 2? If not I highly recommend to watch it ASAP! It’s amazing.

I have heard that Die Hard Arcade was allegedly meant to be a new Streets of Rage game before transforming into Die Hard Arcade. I am unsure how true that is though.

@@Kokomadeta In the west Sega got the Die Hard license to sell the game better. I think that the game that was intended to be a new Street's of Rage game was Fighting Force but Sega rejected the idea and it ended being a PSX and N64 release, without a Saturn version.

I think The Ooze soundtrack is pretty good, another example that GEMS doesn't have to equal trash. Johnny Semantics here again heh, why is that called 2.5D now, it's still full 3D graphics even if the controls aren't? Sonic X-Treme is a real tragedy, all the versions seemed good to me so I can only blame pointless beefs on that loss, regardless of history still strange no true 32-bit Sonic game for SS.

it still enrages me how sega of america wouldn't let them make x-treme a pc exclusive under the sega pc label as a final option, saying only console ports were for the brand, not pc exclusives, despite that being a lie because they did publish stuff like yoot tower under it

I think people are just splitting the difference between 3D visuals and 2D gameplay, coming up with 2.5D One of many ways to categorize games.

Its a perfect example of "A house divided cannot stand". Sega just couldn't get their divisions to play nice with each other. An interesting parallel to the antagonistic and sometimes downright hateful advertising Sega of America was regularly outputting.

Yes, sometimes SEGA were their own competitors. The 32X project vs the Saturn project was a prime example of that.

There are plenty of Sonic fans who don't care for Spinball. I like it, but it's far below par when compared with the mainline numbered Sonic games. I wanted to ask if you have tried turning the speed up in the options menu? The sluggish gameplay seems to have been intentional because the developers thought people would find it too difficult at full speed, but most players prefer the faster mode. It won't help any of your other complaints, though.

Mr Sega Lord, I love you and all, but when you showed footage of the blue sphere bonus stage (I’m assuming it’s you playing) for sonic 3, I died inside. You gotta only grab the outer blue spheres in a grid of 9 or more and then they all turn into rings. You butchered it😫

I think Sonic Spinball has a great soundtrack, but it's hard to tell during gameplay, because it has terrible SOUNDS. The 6 or 7 tracks the game has tend to be awesome, but almost every single sound effect sounds annoying, or stupid, or gross, or all of the above.
