The Gannel Estuary in Newquay, Devon, UK, is a place of pure beauty and tranquility. With 2 overflow pipes into it, it is sadly also a place where sometimes it is best not to swim.
The release of sewage into Britain's Oceans and Rivers has been happening since the Victorian era. Their creation of Combined Sewer Overflows means that with heavy rainfall, sewage is released into the waterways to avoid it backing up into peoples homes.
In recent years water companies have been using this to their advantage and even on dry days have been releasing into waterways to avoid having to process the effluent.
