The Garden Fence Didn't Make It

After three years in the wet and cool weather my simple garden fence finally fell down. The high winds and rain that swept through our area brought down a part of the fence and the majority of the posts were rotten so I decided to take them all out.
My plan is to leave the garden open this coming summer to get an idea of a new perimeter. I'll gather posts and branched to build another fence this fall or maybe next winter. I have learned some new techniques that should help the fence last a bit longer.
Overall I am pleased with this fence even though it only lasted three years. I wasn't expecting it to last very long, but I needed it to keep the chickens out of the garden at the time and I felt it would make a very good experiment. I have learned a lot and I really liked the look of the fence. my favorite part is that it was made completely from tree trimmings and offcuts from the mill.

It came down really fast, chipping took the most time. Thanks again for the comment. Hope all is well.

Garden & no fence? Deer are going to LOVE you! Tear down was awesome. Never set anything down on ground, lean it against ANYTHING to keep it less moist.

Yeah, you are right. I have to pick my battles though. We will see what ends up happening. If everything falls together I may have time to build a better fence but, who knows, I may just camp in the garden all summer.

nice opportunity to redesign/reshape out of the wind. honestly december into the 1st half of january was basically just endless dreadful winds, last month the most we got was mid 60s mph gusts, somewhere nearby hit 90mph gusts (i could happily go without wind for a while after that monthlong stretch). i haven't been doing great, given that and recent loss of a pet, but watching videos like yours on these more nicely calm winter days has very much lightened things

I am really sorry. Melancholy days are tough and I am really glad that I could bring some lightness. Our winds weren't fun but they weren't nearly that strong and didn't last nearly that long. Nature really can humble us sometimes.

So the posts have lasted about 3 years then? I guess thats reasonable given the climate. Packing with gravel might help too, but like you said, different woods are different. The hemlock is still looking good

The hemlock did well where it wasn't touching the ground. I feel like I learned a lot for making a better fence in the future. Best Wishes.
