“There is not a sprig of grass that shoots uninteresting to me,” Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1790. Gardening was a lifelong interest for Jefferson, but the gardens at Monticello were also a functional part of the plantation, with enslaved workers cultivating vegetables and fruits year-round. Today, our gardeners maintain and cultivate the gardens & grounds of Monticello, including a 1,000-foot vegetable garden featuring historic and heirloom plants.
Join us on Wednesday, September 20th at 1 PM EST for a live conversation with Curator of Plants Peggy Cornett, and Interim Manager of Gardens and Grounds Michael Tricomi as they discuss what is happening in Monticello’s gardens as we approach fall, and answer your questions about Monticello’s gardens in Jefferson’s era and now.
