I remember when I first properly listened to this song. I was going through a pretty emotional time with my family and with my love life. And I remember I just started bawling like a fucking baby. And it makes me well up when I listen to it now. Knowing that there's someone somewhere out there that's feeling just like me makes me feel a lot less alone, I suppose. Thank you Brian and co. for creating the most relevant album ever!

Brian Fallon always seems to say things that reach deeply into what I'm feeling, and I am incalculably grateful that The Gaslight Anthem lets me shout in the car without it being totally quiet.

Had this song stuck in my head for days, had to give it a blast. Love this band so much. Can't believe how underrated they are, they should be playing sell out stadiums and have number one albums. These guys do not make bad records. Fantastic live as well.

I'm a death metal and stoner/doom metal type of guy, but this band has a special place in my heart. They are so cohesive as a unit live, and they have such a fresh sound, they really proved to me that true rock and roll isn't dead. If you have not seen this great band live you are truly missing out.

Chinedum Osakwe Thanks, i know right, this band and a few others such as FIDLAR and All Them Witches and the black keys have all proved that rock is still alive and well. Its a genre that can never be killed off due to the unity of its fans.

When you're in it, you don't see it. Toxic relationships hold blinkers to those involved. This song is the anthem for those people. I hope you get there with the right people everybody and everything falls into line for you. It did for me x

If I thought it would help, I would drive this car into the sea. If the fire and the smoke and explosions could speak for me. If the words that I used to try to explain How something inside of me started to break. Ah, but one by one my words just got in the way. And how many nights did I crash against the waves With my head going under? How many days did I spend trying to see it your way? If you try you'd remember. I changed a change and kept on saying, "One of these days something inside's gonna break. And we won't get it back now, baby" (something's gonna break.) If I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart. (If I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart) And if I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart. (If I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart) All of the things that I tried to explain, How something inside of me started to break. We were living proof, one by one we drifted away. One by one we drifted away. And time after time there were things that would scare me to tears, While you called me haunted. I paced around the bed where you laid. One of these days baby, something… (something's gonna break) And if I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart. (If I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart) And if I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart. (If I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart) All of the things that I tried to explain, How something inside of me started to break. We were living proof, one by one we drifted away… Drifted away… One by one and day by day, I became the dark in the places where you live. And if I thought it would help I would carve your name into my heart. We were living proof, one by one we drifted away.

Having seen them play live, and having the opportunity to speak (however briefly) with the other bands they were touring with, this album is more meaningful than their previous work. It sounds more personal, and is far more raw than the previous albums. Add the fact that he recently divorced, began a separate musical project to experiment with new sounds, and you get a very different sound, from a very different man. It seems like Brian has gotten tired of telling the stories of "Maria" or "Virginia" and decided to start telling his own stories. I loved "American Slang" and "The '59 sound", and I loved "Handwritten", they will always be my favorite band... But they can't remain static. All good things will, inevitably, change. Realistically speaking, there will come a day when these guys will not be making music anymore, and all we will have will be these songs. Let's enjoy what they created, rather than compare it to the past.
@tylercaplan12259 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more. the other albums were solid and are amazing in their own ways. listening to them now compared to get hurt, it does seem like they were more indirect stories. this album has so much heart and soul oozing out of it and it's very clear what the songs are about. have mercy is my favorite

it's funny, when this album came out I couldn't really relate to it, even though I was going through something similar. Now this year with some distance between me and those events, I just dig the hell out of it. Stay Vicious, Get Hurt, Underneath the Ground, Stray Paper, Break Your Heart, this song....so many bangers. Just a superb and ultra-relatable piece of work.

I broke up with someone amazing because of my mental health. I had to take some time away to fix myself. She was scared that during that time I’d find someone else but I kept myself to myself and worked on everything. Just as I felt I had reached the shore I got in touch with her yesterday and found out she’s with someone else now. I am completely fucking broken and this song with a fuck load of alcohol is the only thing getting me through tonight. Back to square one tomorrow.
