FUN FACT: the band playing in the video (not Gaslight) is playing the song “The Patient Ferris Wheel” by Gaslight Anthem. I was the actor in the opening scene and the director and I thought it would be a fun homage to the band. :)

This band! My good friend rest his soul introduced me to them in the worst way possible. 4 years ago he sent me a message out of the blue saying he had two tickets to see TGA in London but the person he was going with had dropped out and wanted to know if I wanted to go... At the time I'd never heard of them and couldn't really be bothered to travel all that way for a gig, so I declined. 6 months later sadly he committed suicide. I felt so guilty like it was my fault for not going with him as to why he did what he did. 4 years later however I am now a massive fan of TGA and everytime I listen to them J get a feeling that he's listening with me. Rest easy Billy, I'll see you again one day brother!

This band makes me so nostalgic. Ive been listening to them since their first album and its so much more than music for me, its moments in my life. I can literally remember parts of my life and what I was doing when each new album came out and I would listen to the albums on repeat. I would drive around for hours on the backroads of Maine until I was almost out of gas, listening and remembering each word of every song. Their songs were my gaslight anthem. It makes me miss those times so much in my life with their music as my soundtrack. Not very many bands can do what they do for me.

Man, the emotion in this song. In this video. It just carries. It brings me right back to the day I first discovered this video. I was sitting in the library in my high school, waiting to find an opportunity to ask this girl I really liked to prom. She was surrounded by friends, so I just sat and nervously waited, headphones in, listening to this song and taking glimpses of the video. She left and I lost track of her. I didn't know what to do, so I ate and then probably 30 minutes later walked to my locker where the flowers were stored. And then suddenly, in the completely empty hall, she rounds the corner, alone. I busted open that locker faster than I knew possible. I yelled her name down the hall and she turned and smiled seeing the flowers, knowing this was probably coming. The two of us then walked out together, flowers in her hand. That was years ago. We never did get together. A million things have happened since then, and now l'm with a different wonderful girl I couldnt be happier to call my other half. I dont even think about the girl in this story anymore. But at the time, that day, that hour was one of the best in my life. And this song was there for it. And it's been with me ever since, perfectly capturing the joyous emotion of that moment.

I think everyone is a but confused.. The young guy at the start playing in the band flicking the lighter plays a gig and points at the young teenage couple while he's playing. The young girl then buys her boyfriend a copy of the album as a gift before he goes to war. After he goes to war the boys dad gives the album to the kid across the road as a gift who then sells it many years later. The young guitarist from the start then stumbles across it, his album and buys it as an old man... still flicking the lighter. He doesn't know the amazing history of that particular record which was all initiated by him at the gig in the first place
@grayfox223r7 жыл бұрын
I think the part you are missing is that the boy who went to war probably died because most likely he went and fought in the Vietnam war. Also, is the reason why his father gave his old stuff away. He gave them away in hopes the kid would enjoy the music as much as his son did. Sometimes life does't turn out as you imagine.

Thanks for this. I like to listen to this at work, so I've only seen bits and pieces of the video. It makes a lot of sense. I think the most heartbreaking moment is when the sweet young kid who gets the record from the dad turns into an obviously depressed and disheveled adult who's probably going to use the money from the record to buy a sub at a gas station and eat it alone in front of a 2 Broke Girls rerun that he's seen so many times it's not even funny anymore.

+Semi_Sweet I've had a great time listening to those great albums. Thanks for the tip on "The Horrible Crowes" and "Painkillers", I've given a listen. Good stuff. Outstanding work. As you probably know, a big influence of Gaslight Anthem is The Replacements (The Mats). From Spin magazine... Brian Fallon of Gaslight Anthem said in a 2009 interview that "without The Replacements, there would be no Gaslight Anthem" and that they were inspired by the song "Left of the Dial."[67] www.spin.com/2009/04/spin-sessions-gaslight-anthem-unplugged/ Another early band you may want to check out from the Twin Cities is Husker Du whom both Nirvana and Foo Fighter's (particularly Dave Grohl) have mentioned them as major influences...

from what I get out it of is how powerful music can be. Through depression(Drinking alcohol, the singer with the lighter), Being onstage and feeling overwhelming energy and happiness (which is his love for music and fans), and overtime how that translates into memories and love for a young couple, and eventually the same artist (with the lighter from the start) buying his own music to bring that feeling back.

I think the song is about the undiscovered life that a piece of music can have. All over the world people listen to these songs, yet everyone has its own connection to it (the moment and place you heard it first, the person who made you discover it, the fun/troubles a song can get you through, the strenght/comfort you search in a song,...). It's about the power of music to bring people together yet all those people give a single piece of music a thousand different meanings.

Pull it out, turn it up, what's your favorite song? That's mine, I've been crying to it since I was young I know there's someone out there feeling just like I feel I know they're waiting up, I know they're waiting to heal And I've been holding my breath Are you holding your breath For too many years to count? Too many years to count And we waited for the sirens that never come And we only write by the moon Every word handwritten And to ease the loss of youth And how many years I've missed you Pages plead forgiveness Every word handwritten Let it out, let me in, take a hold of my hand There's nothing like another soul that's been cut up the same And did you want to drive without a word in between? I can understand, you need a minute to breathe And to sew up the seams after all this defeat All this defeat And we waited for the sirens that never come And we only write by the moon Every word handwritten And to ease the loss of youth And the many, many years I've missed you Pages plead forgiveness Every word handwritten Here in the dark, I cherish the moonlight I'm in love with the way you're in love with the night And it travels from heart to limb to pen And we waited for the sirens that never come And we only write by the moon Every word handwritten Every word handwritten And with this pen, I thee wed From my heart to your distress Every word handwritten

Every line of this song speaks to me. Differently then most people I'm sure. Probably beyond you're intent, but truly a masterpiece. Thank you, Brian. I've been following your work for almost two years, not long, but nearly everything you make is perfect.

This music video is so well directed. I got tears in my eyes at the end. Gaslight, you are amazing.

Seems like Gaslight Anthem listened to Bruce as kids, then grew up and saw the world wasn't what it was made out to be. Love it.
