Awesome story and narration. Thsnks, Ian. These stories make me laugh. Carnacki is awesome. He invites his friends over for dinner to hear a story, does not let anyone discuss the story until he is ready, tells the story, holds a brief Q&A session,, then kicks everyone out so he can go to bed.

The idea that he used a captive, helpless cat for this procedure is the mark of a monster himself! Bleeding heart cat lover.

He, &, other townsmen, used two poor mastiff dogs in another tale, to, basically, the SAME brutally cruel ends 😓
@blixten29284 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I HATE it when they use animals like that. People dying horrible deaths: quite OK. Expected, in fact. Bunny-rabbits getting fried: No. Will not do at all. I hate it. SAVE THE DOGS and CATS and WHATNOTS!!!
@pinstripesuitandheelsАй бұрын
I hate it too. At least in this story, we're spared the vivid description of how the cat was killed. In the castle with the laurels the death of the two dogs made me sick. At least this time, the cat was already gone before we got the minutiae.
@jenncornthwaite2763Ай бұрын
@d.dedrick7991 it was common place in the time period. That's similar to being irritated horse drawn carriages are used in stories set in the past. We know better now, but even cruelty free makeup uses technology developed in the past. When things were not nice to animals.

I kept hoping the cat was another layer of protection, but I knew it couldn't be, cooped up in a carrier. 😢

Would be great to have a Carnacki cooking show, where rather than telling you how he set up his magical protections in great detail, he tells you in great detail how he prepares the meat, sauces and side dish. ‘After preparing the water in the bowls, I combined the ground pepper, ground mustard seed and garlic powder, thereafter creating a pentagram in powder on each pork chop, which i then covered with aluminium foil and put into the refrigerator. I then sat across from the fridge… and prepared to wait.’

Is it because C.M. Eddy's family still has rights to the work since the book was co-authored with Lovecraft? I know they do not like to "share". I wonder what C.M.'s opinion was on the matter.

I love the Carnacki series, so happy to have come across this. HORROR BABBLE has never let me down with great stories. I would love to hear some stories from Thomas Ligotti...An excellent author with a great ability to take a mind to the bleak, dark and twisted aspects of human kind..lol. Or unkind..thanks so much.

I discovered the stories, in books, when I was back in NYC. And I have a good bit of Hodgson in my bookshelf here in New Orleans. What a delight while we were in quarantine, (August 2020), I happened to notice stories read on You Tube...and for a lark, typed in Hodgson. A batch of these wonderful titles came up. What a joy! I'm a fan! I am 72, a former ESL instructor, and all my students love to read....

"Carnacki, the Ghost-Finder" is a collection of occult detective short stories by English writer William Hope Hodgson. "The Gateway of the Monster" In an ancient mansion, the bedroom known as the Grey Room was the site of a grisly murder generations ago. Carnacki is summoned to investigate a noisy spirit that tears off the bedclothes and slams the door(s). @fisk06 ай бұрын
That seems to be based on a series of books called The Ghost Finders by Simon R. Green, written in the 2010s, but evidently inspired by these 100 years older books, as Green has named the institute after Carnacki.

This is a remarkably neat story. We do not learn the true nature of the creature, nor its name, and the protagonist has to try several methods before he stumbles on to a viable solution.

Listening once again to this. The framing is rather antiquated, but the description of the scene trapped in the protective circle is on par with anything similar. It is even reminiscent of the classic 'rogue Male'

Do you have any plans to do "The Haunted Jarvee" or any other Carnacki stories beyond the first six?

Hello there! You aren't the first to ask. We can't be sure the latter Carnacki tales are in the public domain, as they were published by Arkham House posthumously. If it turns out they are, then of course we'll be more than happy to record them.
