went up to see the Bunnymen in Liverpool, the early 80s, a few of us Brummies, nowhere to stay etc, Scouse lads invited us to parties, place to kip, top time, the power of music over inner cultures

From my vantage point -- across the world -- there always seemed to be more connecting Liverpool scallies with Mancunian perries than there was separating them (dialects, teams, &c). Case in point: The Farm's "Pastures Old and New" and Happy Mondays' "Squirrel and G-Man Twenty Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile (White Out)" are both so much of a piece (not to mention, quite underrated). Were there any other funky casuals making anything in that vein?

Peter mentioned the leeds lads. They had a band called the Bridewell Taxis who were aligned with the vyt. They might've even supported the mondays, when they played in leeds. They were bobbins and had no funk at all. There were plenty more casuals that adopted the rave scene and became promoters, djs and dealers rather than make it big, with a pop band.

@@twixaphen9386 Oh, thanks for the tip. I am only vaguely familiar with their music from the Madchester era. I'll search for some earlier stuff. Thanks

Was there a real cross over between the causal look and rave/baggy? Evidently from this there was something but I always saw them as two distinct looks/mindsets. One was all about looking your best ( casual) and wearing top labels and the other (baggy/rave) was all about clothes to dance in and not worry too much about. I speak as someone who was a 16 in 89 in London so was there, at football and at raves. Maybe someone could enlighten me. Today everything has become a bit of a mish .mash

I was born in 1981 and in the 90s in Scotland there was a trend of wearing top labels and a lot of jeans at the time were baggy and t-shirts were too.

In 89 when everyone went "baggy" you could be "baggy" in chipie, chevignon, nafnaf etc or get cheap high street stuff like Joe Bloggs gear . You could always spot a casual at the raves by his clothes. By 1990 there were so many divs wearing the baggy look so we started wearing slimmer stuff like Stone Island or Armani jeans with Ralph shirts and polos. The jackets and tops were still big but the jeans were straight leg to sit with the trainers ( old school adidas suedes we're in after the shell toe craze).

In Manchester it was working class north mancunians who got into acid first. They dressed casual. The scene was truly underground then. They changed the Hacienda Before then it was full of posers- shop assistants and hairdressers who didn't dance. However, the scene didn't last long-- by the summer of 88 the scallies moved onto the Thunderdome. In the meantime, acid House had broken out and was all over the news. That was when certain shops started producing cheap tat in Day-Glo colours with obvious references to drugs and 60s psychedelia and the masses followed the fashion, as they do. In fact, Ian Brown wore flares before then but the only time I saw him in the Hacienda was on a Thursday - Indie night and when they played the short lived Temperance night. The Roses did put a rave on behind Piccadilly station but I think that was because they'd heard about what was going on and got on it for credibility. Primal Scream were the same-- they played the Boardwalk as leather clad rockers then six months later released Screamadelica after someone took them to the Hacienda and they clocked what was going on.
