Bass can be played with a pick for a different tone, or different playing style, similar to how a regular 6-string guitar can be played without a pick, and with ones fingers. Some bassists prefer to use a pick, whereas others simply want to experiment with different tones. The pick contributes to Reita's tone, but does not make it. Since you are new to bass, work on developing your regular finger technique first and foremost, before you venture into the land of bass picks. I hope this helps! :)
