Today Trevor is breaking down the Virginia Tech helmet study. This landmark helmet study provides the first recent scientific look at whitewater helmets to give us an understanding of how concussive force is transferred through whitewater helmets. The methodology used leaves a lot of questions, however it also gives us some serious insight abut what a good helmet should do. Hey sweet protection, start making helmets for people with large heads. Your L/ XL helmets are a full inch smaller than many of your competitors.

I read an article published back in the 90s on bicycle helmets. It said they were not designed for low impacts. They dissipated energy by fracturing the helmet material. On slow impacts the material transmitted much of the force. I wonder if todays rafting helmets are the same.

Great Vid mane! I've been wondering about my NRS Chaos full cut for a bit. I'm actually surprised at how well it preformed in the study, but after seeing your vid, def gonna be upgrading. Helmets for any type of use all protect from glancing hits. Were it not for a helmet, there could be significant soft tissue trauma to the head from rocks/boulders tearing flesh on each impact.

Important factor is helmet fit. Any of these helmets not fitted correctly negates the ranking.
