There are times in the backcountry where you set up your base camp, hike out for the day or hunt out for the day away from camp and for one reason or another you are not able to make it back to your base camp that night where your nice tent, sleeping bag, pad and food are nestled in the perfect camping spot. So what do you do? Area you prepared to stay the night in an unplanned situation? Spiking out for the night is something all guides and backcountry users should be ready to do.
Many times, we have been in the backcountry for one reason or another we needed to spike out away from our main camp. Some of the reasons have been due to weather, fatigue, hot pursuit of game, injuries and many others. It is always a good idea to have the gear you need to stay at least one night in the backcountry if you need to. We almost always have this set up in our packs as we take off into the backcountry. Having the right gear isn’t all, you must know how to use it.
We hope you enjoy today's episode of llama life. Here are the links where you can buy some of the items in the video:

Beau, thanks for taking the time to share some of the things you have learned from your extensive time outdoors. It's really helpful for so many people. I for one really like your clear, practical approach. Wishing the best for you and your family, and am looking forward to more of your videos.

I made a sleep pad/blanket/shelter out of household 18" reflectix foil insulation taped together with gorilla tape.... ($25 total), I also have a $3 emergency space blanket, a $8 Foil faced/blaze orange blanket with a cheap Walmart coleman sleeping bag... A lightweight $30 camo nylon 12x10 tarp off of Amazon & A $7 foldable pocket stove for wood + a 25gram $16 BRS ultralight Ti stove for iso fuel from Amazon.... I've slept out in below freezing temps here in Wisconsin with this setup as snug as a bug in a rug..!!

You definitely got everything you need. Just a couple ideas, there's a tent from River Country Trekker that only weighs 2 lbs 12oz... It's around $50... For the cost vs.weight vs comfort/survival factor I think it could be well worth it. SOL (Survive Outdoors Longer) has some decent products. I'm also a big fan of having a hatchet. Just my measly 2 cents. Love this spike camp ideas and videos. I said it before and will say it again... Those ZIP lighters are worth more than their weight in gold. 😊

I hear you Eric. Thanks for the tips, very helpful information. I almost always have a hatchet of sorts at base camp, I am often the guy who says "ah we dont need it we will be back tonight". And all to often we dont come back.

I went ahead and purchased the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL3 with the BA Lost Ranger 15-degree down bag. It's a little more weight, but should make for a comfortable setup for 2 adults in the backcountry. I need to figure out a better pillow situation, though. Do you recommend having a down puffy jacket inside a stuff bag?

Big Agnes makes great gear. Sounds like you have a great bag. For light weight set ups a down jacket works great. I also enjoy the Klymit pillows. I think they are the best around. Thanks for watching.

Your choice of background music could also keep you warm Beau! Just hold a "air guitar" comp around the campfire! lol
