Just came across this cover. Matt-Man has a lot of talent. Couldn't tell the difference between Tony and Matt. Dawg got talent.

A quick note/question/comment about the verse progression: is that really all he's playing? In the studio version and every live version I hear more bass notes in them (ie when it goes from F-C-Dm, there's a distinct piano voice at the bottom going F2-E2-D2) and an overall wider spread in the voicings. Have you looked into that? Am I hearing more in the isolated track than what's there, or is it actually played differently than in this video? Great work as always.

That’s what I hear/see, but I’ve always focused on the Three Sides Live version, film and album. There is a chance I’ll never play this song again because my band spent the past 5 years doing the 1980-1982 tours, and now we’re doing 1976-1978 for the next few years.

You really nailed the keyboard parts and sounds on your band's Duke performance. That record is my personal favorite Genesis album.

Love your Genesis covers and gear rundowns. Question, would you ever be open to maybe showing if the Prophet 10 can get a convincing RMI 368 sound? I know buying a Prophet would be way more expensive, but finding a 368 or 368X on the secondhand market is difficult at best. For the same reason I was pleased to see you demo some of the Pro Soloist sounds on the Behringer 2600 as I would much rather buy that than spend 4x as much on an a vintage preset synth with limited features, assuming one would even be available. Besides that, the Hammond and Mellotron are easily available new.
@mattthomasoverdrive45147 күн бұрын
What I could definitely do is create a Prophet 10 pad and use an MXR Phase 100 and chorus to replicate the In The Cage/Eleventh Earl of Mar/Duchess sound he did on the Polymoog and Prophets 5/10. What you describe is certainly a worthy experiment, but I suspect I would only come as close as Tony did, such as the middle section of One For The Vine.
@vincentmorelli10137 күн бұрын
@@mattthomasoverdrive4514that's fair. I know the Korg SV-2 has an Electra Piano/Harpsichord preset but you don't get organ mode with the long sustain. I figure since the RMI uses divide down architecture like a combo organ it probably wouldn't have the exact same sound as an 8 or 10 voice poly synth.
@mattthomasoverdrive45147 күн бұрын
The RMI actually has 68 oscillators - one per key! Don’t quote me on the following, but I believe each generates a tone and the piano/harpsichord/lute settings are different fixed filter, and organ mode and sustain pedal are different amp envelopes.

Nice to hear a real RMI on this! Yours looks in great condition too. Did you consider sticking the pedals just to the casing? I think on the Selling tour, Tony still had the Fender just sitting on top of it. Regarding the Fender Blender, I think you got the 4 knob re-issue from the 90ies? As an anecdote: the circuit of those is actually not like the originals. Apparently when they were making the Kevin Shields edition, Kevin pointed out that it just didn't sound like the original he had. After then comparing the circuit to the one from Kevin, Fender found out that they got the circuit wrong and they corrected it in the Shields Blender (plus adding additional controls). Regarding the Lamb: in principle the composition is so that it starts faster and then there is a ritartando to drop the tempo when the band comes in. It's just that I find that Tony often is a bit sloppy there. Sometimes he gets the "difficult run" wrong, and during the bridge it often is the case that Tony and Phil (or Peter) get out of sync and either one of the two tries to compensate. Always has been the case. I think it's also why they cut the intro section from Carpet Crawlers and at some point they started with piano and hi-hat so that the tempo gets more locked (well actually, they added a bass part to it too at the last 2 tours so that was on tape). I assume you love the Neo Ventilator as rotary speaker? Im considering one (and maybe get a real Hammond T). It's also funny that things which in principle are not so complicated are far more complex to pull off in a band setting. I like that you share your experiences there, many people don't know that it's not a matter of just knowing your part and off you go. I learned that the hard way in my teens when I started all of this. Playing with others around you is complex.

Yeah, this 368x I just got is one of the cleanest vintage instruments I’ve ever owned. I’ve rethought how to deal with those pedals a bunch, in the end the pedalboard is easiest to set up and break down. Thanks for the info on the Blender - I’d seen there was another reissue but haven’t looked into it since I already had this earlier reissue. I only use it for Volcano and Quiet Earth and it gets the job done. I always assumed the Carpet intro was dropped from Lamb Stew because it was redundant with the title track bridge, and they just kept that arrangement standard. I just listened to the Shrine 1975 radio show and thought, yeah this was always hard to do. I do like the Vent, but I’m only using it on the slow speed in this context. I don’t think any plugin or pedal has nailed the fast Leslie sound, yet. That said, I’ve used both the GSI and IK versions of organ/rotary for recording sessions and nobody complained. Collaborating with my band mates is the best part of this gig! I enjoy the moment it all comes together in rehearsal the most. I can own all this gear and practice all these parts, but if there aren’t four other equals to do this with, it would be a slog.

The 2600 is one of my favorite parts of A Trick of The Tail, Wind & Wuthering, and And Then There Were Three. I especially love that Tony even brought the 2600 on the 1978 tour; those lead lines on the soundboards and bootleg recordings absolutely soar! Very much hope to see a 1978 tour recreation in the future!

Hi Matt! Your videos are of great help and insight for us Genesis TB keyboard fans. Thanks a ton! Cherry Audio’s site for Quadra mentions to have emulated the 14-stage phase shifter in theirs, together with several enhancements. Not sure if they’re referring to the previous version or not, but the update of their notes is from September 23rd 2024. Maybe they fixed it. I’m looking for a plug-in to make the Genesis Quadra sounds, and seeking for the best choice.

Any suggestions as to what pedal or software in 2024 could produce that wonderful HiFly phase shift modulation at 7.28 and 7.58? I have neither the time, money or inclination to add myself to the current HiFly waiting list (!) so if there's anything that the knowledgeable folk who've commented could recommend I'd be very grateful. Thanks!

It sounds like a mix between 1980 Genesis and Steve Hackett Band (the singer reminds me of Steve's singer/drummer). It makes me imagine what if Genesis would sound like this in 2007. Also, December 18th is an special date for me: I'm from Argentina, and that day in 2022, Argentina's football selection won their third World Cup against France in an epic match. Also, I happen to have a friend family which birthday is December 18th. So have this video premiered that day is very special for me.

Question about the Archive #2 released recording (Lyceum 1980); I could swear that there was vocoder chorus happening during the middle section. Was that an overdub after the fact (and if not, where's it coming from)?
@mattthomasoverdrive451421 күн бұрын
Once Chester, Phil, and Tony begin the middle instrumental section, Mike switches to guitar synth (ARP Avatar in 1978, Roland GR300 in 1980) and Daryl to 6-string electric. What you hear is Mike’s guitar synth chords, which also covers the synth lead when Tony drops out for both hands on piano.
