You create a dominant chord if you drop the original chord by 5 semitones. You have a different chord, but the scale you create is one that makes sense... Of you have Cmaj you'll get Gmaj, so you picked the notes CEG and GBD so you get CDE(F)G(A)B: A major scale. If you start with a minor chord, for example a minor you'll get e minor so have the notes ABC(D)E(F)G, so you build a minor scale...
