years ago I was in sales, and the one technique we were all told was when selling a product, whether it was an appliance, a TV or mattress, didn't matter, make sure you physically hand the customer the accessory piece to take a look at. i.e. you buy a TV, put the HDMI cable in their hand and tell them you use this to hook up the TV to your other devices. Sears had a study that the longer someone held something in their hand, they were more likely to buy it and our commissions on accessories were through the roof. When I started using this technique, my accessory sales went up to about 90%.

I used to own a pizza shop and always told the people putting the ingredients on the pizza to ALWAYS make two movements, one to put 90% of each ingredient on and a second to put the last 10% on, so that if a customer is standing and watching their pizza being made they will get the impression that they are getting more than normal. Reason being, I worked next to a pizza shop in 86-87, husband and wife business, the guy would always be generous and his wife always took something off every pizza every time. Still a great pizza, but it just seemed the guy made them better. (He eventually became the mayor of our city and his wife filed for divorce)
@bholdr----02 ай бұрын
That makes sense .. another pizza place trick is when we used to have a fan that blew some of the oven air into the sidewalk- you could literally watch people walk by, stop, smell, and then come in and buy a slice or two! And, while on tour, vending at festivals like Cochella, Bonaroo, Sturgis, SEMA, etc, we would also make a big production out of tossing the dough, which always brought a crowd, and when that crowd cheered, more people would come to the booth and buy $7 slices or $40 pies (prob more like $10/50 these days!). Edit- the dough tossing thing reminded me of the fish-throwing shop at the Pike Place Market in Seattle! (Showmanship!)

Chick Fil A are pros at this. They build a bond with the customer in certain ways to ensure loyalty in the end. When I worked there, we had these strict labels all over the store, intensive training, and way of doing things to make the customer feel comfortable. Especially with the proportion, even if it’s just an inch off, it gets sent back to the kitchen. So then when a group of customers get their fries nobody can compare and say “wait why do you have more fries than me?” or that awkward look in the bag, wondering if their food got lost along the way. The customer feels happier when they leave, and more inclined to eat there again.
@LordAleKai16 күн бұрын
This is funny to me because I used to frequent chick fil A and got to red status or whatever the one is before the last one and the majority of my experiences were pretty bad from a customer service pov. I kept coming back for the food but eventually it wore out like all foods do for me and I didn't want to deal with the attitude I got from every single chick fil a establishment.
@zf565615 күн бұрын
I haven't been back to Chick Fil A in yrs. It was so uncomfortable. THey didn't have a menu sign. I wasn't allowed to order at the register, but was told i had to on my phone. For whatever reason I wasn't able to. Now I have some "nice" lady hovering over me, waiting for me to order. Meanwhile, I'm unfamiliar with the menu. The food wasn't memorable, but I distinctly remember feeling uncomfortable on the way out. There were no apparent trash cans, so i wasn't sure if there was something clever going on with the trash bins, or if i just leave it at the table. The experience was unpleasant. Be truly genuine (I have no doubts the lady performed as trained), and stop expecting me to use my device to make what should be a simple transaction. There shouldnt be so many question on the way in and out. That's not even a cultural thing. It's a Chick Fil A thing. Again, haven't been back.

@@zf5656 I’m sorry that was your experience, I don’t blame you for not going back in years. You should never feel uncomfortable leaving a restaurant/food place. I used to work there, yes the high cost means that the fries aren't actually a deal, although there are exceptions. You're told to measure sizes by eyeballing the size of the extra scoop, but also that any fries you don't serve within 5 minutes of being in the salt station needs to be thrown away. You also measure the pre-cooks (half cooked fries you'll see the crew making before they let them cool in order to cook more evenly) by eyeballing them. This means that very often employees veer towards having too many fries instead of not enough (unless they're so low they'll need to cut more potatoes), so if it's not busy your fries will be larger so that they don't throw away fries.

Yup also, if you didn’t know, Jesus will fulfill you more than anything in this world, I speak from experience (from when i did Romans 10:9-13), he loves you and wants to be in a meaningful (not romantic) relationship with you. :) “that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:9-13 KJV “and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.” Mark 1:15 KJV If you want proof that Jesus and the Bible are true look a documentary called “Ron Wyatt discoveries 2022” on KZbin and a KZbin channel called Expedition Bible. They both examine archeological sites and discoveries that prove the Bible, and even reference secular sources. (Just don’t convert to 7th day Adventism after watching the documentary) And lastly if you don’t know the gospel and want to be saved search up “abc’s of Salvation Teenmissions” on Google and it should be the first or second result. When you click on it read the whole thing, and do what it says and have faith in Jesus while you are doing it, do not doubt, and if it is hard for you to do what it says, ask Jesus to help you, have faith that he will, and *he will.* God Bless :)

I worked in sales, and this is such a key part of the psychology of sales. People are inherently selfish and appreciate being rewarded. Perceived generosity or gifts builds an emotional bond that leads to loyalty. The fries at Five Guys are likely budgeted out and it is part of their sales model. One of whatever size, plus a scoop is the standard for them (even if the customer doesn't know it). At most you might have a bean counter looking at an abacus and insisting the beads say otherwise, but this fostered loyalty will always yield a boon. It's why businesses allow for "make it right" freebies. It's for this loyalty. Yes, you could go to McDonalds, which is cheaper, or In-n-Out, which has fresher ingredients, but if you're hankering for fries, you will wind up back at 5 Guys. The "free" fries are your incentive.

Oh really? And when was this magical time where marketing was all about delivering precise and accurate information to potential customers? So unless you're going all the way back to... I dunno, primordial microbes or something, I'm going to have to call BS on your claim that things have changed.

Marketing was never about informing people...
@Jasondurgen2 ай бұрын
@@mylesleggette7520 I never stated marketing was about relaying precise and accurate information to potential customers, so that just shot everything you said down. Certainly a modicum of deceit was always used in some way in advertising, but in its early years it was more about telling people to buy your product and informing them of what exactly it was. Especially in a time when there were legitimate new inventions to advertise. Remember, there was once a time without internet and even tv, so not everybody knew about the new cardi-b album on day one. Sure, Henry Ford, lie a little and sell your product, but now people own Ford model T’s of all things and not horse drawn carriages. “You can have any color you want, as long as it’s black.” Remember that? Sure, it wasn’t a lie to help with sales of his vehicle, but it did allow him to skip out on offering different colors because anything other than black was evidently too expensive. Nowadays, it’s more precisely about how to mislead and coax people into buying something (probably something they don’t even need really), especially as the landscape for each market across most industries as largely been the same in the last few decades, so companies need to compete with how many others who sell the same product for buyers. It becomes a nest of lying to the customer about your product and lying about other products to prop yours up a tier. People are literally taught in some marketing courses, whether in university or an online one, how to manipulate average joes into buying crap. Sure there are always outliers and con artists across every generation. After all, snake oil was a real thing among countless others. But five guys isn’t exactly selling snake oil, are they? They’re not inherently con artists, but they are being predatorily deceptive. And why is that 6oz one such an odd-ball? It's more per ounce than *both* the smaller *and* the larger version. Well, the thing is _you're not _*_supposed_*_ to buy that one._ It's only there to try to push you towards buying one of the other two. *Both* the 5oz *and* the 10oz are better value, so you're _actually_ comparing a 5oz and 10oz package *in context* of how much better _both_ are compared to the 6oz. And you feel like you're "getting one over" on the store because you "saw through their trick" and you avoided buying the 6oz version. Now, maybe you go for the 10oz because it's just flat-out best cost/weight ratio. Or maybe you settle for the 5oz, reasoning that even the 10oz is _another_ trick, they're trying to lure you in and spend more on 10oz when 5oz is all you need. Maybe you want the 5oz because it will be fresher each time from a new package, or you don't think you can use 10oz before it goes bad, and you'll end up squandering the "savings" by throwing away bad product. But, the reality, is that the trick already worked _just by making you consider the options in the first place!_ You think you've "gotten one over" on the store, but if you're at that point, they've *already* gotten one over on *you.* Because you're looking at the value of a product _you weren't even there to buy in the first place._ And guess what else... ... you can easily just replace "ounces" with "gacha currency"... 500 Gachatokens - $1.99 600 Gachatokens - $2.49 1000 Gachatokens - $3.49 Or, even worse: -250- 500 Gachagems (+100% bonus) -360- 600 Gachagems (+66.7% bonus) -700- 1000 Gachagems (+42.8% bonus) same prices.

Interesting theory, except for one thing: no one is going to stand there and do the math to figure out the cost per weight of three different sizes of a product if they weren't looking to buy that product in the first place. I do agree that all gacha games are a scam though.

Always loved this about 5 guys, only if they would lower their prices in general though

This guy knows all the tricks yet he still eats all the meatballs in Ikea and the fries in Five Guys.

So often I start my trek through ilea picking up a few things, but my half way through I’m so frustrated I just abandon the cart and leave. They could have had plenty of sales from me over the years but in the end I just could never find the patience to make it through their entire farce of a store.

I remember the very first time my family went to IKEA.. we filled two trolleys with purchases as we walked and walked and found more appealing things to take along the way but eventually we didnt find the cashier..we were able to see the sign from far but it was literally a maze we couldn't reach to it then...we found are selves infront of the entrance so we left the trolleys and went out without purchasing anything we where so tired and it was just too much 😂😂

I went to Ikea several times and didn't buy anything. I had something specific in mind, and when I actually got there, and saw it in person, found that it was a lot crappier then the picture implied. This happened a couple times, untill I wrote them off completely as not worth considering.

Gotta love those B.O.B. fries! And yet, occasionally I'll get a craving for a Five Guys burger but it's never as good as I build it up to be in my head and get full before I can even finish it. The fries are still good, but I've gotten to the point in which I prefer the fries I make myself (from scratch) over what I can get anywhere else.

One time I went to Five Guys right before they closed for the night. I got a small fry with my burger, then since they were about to close, they proceeded to load my bag all the way to the top with fries. I was like "Whoa, what are you doing?", and the guy told me they were about to throw them out anyway. I have to admit, it was kinda fun eating the fries down so I could find my burger. Too bad I was full by the time I found it.

Imagine a Five Guys but its an Ikea maze and you place your order at the front counter and then your food pops out at the end of the maze

The potato from a food cost is negligible when it’s broken down into fries, and it makes it seem like a value since you’re paying 15 f’ing dolllas for a quarter lb of hamburger meat [$1] and a slice of cheese less than a dollar and buns that also less than a dollar. You have 3$ of food cost in a 20$ meal. That covers a lot of overhead.

This is literally why I loved Five Guys, the amount of fries 😁

I've been to IKEA and bought nothing. I only went to see what their mattresses were like. I saw people entering a gate in the carpark so followed them thinking it was just another entrance. It was a staff and contractor entrance. I was in my work clothes and one of the employees using the side entrance asked me if i was a contractor so I said yes. It then dawned one I shouldn't have been using the 'special' entrance as I had no business being in the UK head office and R&D department of IKEA. 😅 I walked all around the offices and design team rooms pretending to look for my partner who's gone in through the main entrance just so I could find my way out into the main store. Nobody noticed me a all and I ended up leaving empty handed. Bought a mattress and a topper though and they are excellent. 👌
