I have never viewed Aang as too perfect. He's stubborn, impatient, and impulsive. Each of these traits have put one or more of his friends in harm's way.

@@trishahernz7809 Well Aang at first when learning Fire bending showed a few of his flaws. He thought he could go through the motions and speed his learning process because he's the avatar. He picked up waterbending so why not fire? Understandably he has a deadline but not taking the time to learning the discipline of the technique caused him to burn Katara because he was trying to learn too fast. He was impatient causing him to skim through important lessons and he was very impulsive trying to use a technique a performer used After that he doubles back and never wants to learn fire bending ever again. Aang has plenty of flaws and flaws can't really be summed up with just a few word. I think that flaws are just as nuanced as boons

@@KTSpeedrunsI'll say that Aang biggest flaw is that he has problem with confronting things head up, is why his main arc is about accepting his role as the Avatar without losing himself. The other stuff you mention is accurate thought, i wouldn't that they are super big flaws, because Aang does tend to realized pretty quickly when he fucks up and does his best to never repeat those mistakes. Zuko on the other hand is defined by his rage and aristocratic entittlement. Both of then needed to find their inner balance in order to become both what the world needed/wanted and what they personally wanted/needed. They are the main narrative foils for a reason.

Even tho Aang has been "impatient" in the past, as well as being stubborn, and rarely impulsive, I wouldn't say he IS all those things. I would disagree with your point, as they do not define his character. I would say that a more defining flaw of his is that he is slower to see the negative sides of things, as he is very optimistic person, who tries to make the best of every situation. Plus, he is much younger than the other characters. I think most the traits you described tend to be linked to immaturity, which makes sense, since he is not even 15 yet. For his age, he is very wise with little flaws.

I feel like Aang is a hard character to relate to and that’s why most people don’t like Aang as much. I saw one person on tumblr put it very well: “Every person Aang has ever known, every person he has ever loved, is gone. That's every classmate you've ever had. Every neighbour. Every acquaintance. Every family member and every friend. And I think the sheer size of Aang's loss is one of the main reasons why his arc isn't as praised and his character isn't as related to, because there is no imagining it. We cannot conceptualize that loss. We cannot even comprehend it. It's the equivalent of running away from home and getting in an accident. You wake up in the hospital. You think it's only been two days. And then you find out everything and everyone you ever knew and loved is dead. That is what it is, and what it can be, to be a survivor of genocide.” And on top of all this, Aang is constantly blamed for what happened to his people and the fate of the world. Yet, at the same time, he is expected to save the world, and be the Avatar - something he never asked for or wanted to be. AT 12. Aang’s trauma is rarely discussed on the show, and that’s something I can understand since it was for kids. But I feel like any normal person would become extremely depressed and downright suicidal if they experienced what Aang went through. The fact Aang managed to smile and remain childish throughout ANY of that is a miracle and it’s part of the reason why he’s one of my favorite characters in all of Avatar. He definitely had flaws, and he definitely had struggles, but it’s difficult for many people to understand or even comprehend them.

A lot of people think that Aang was a coward for not killing Ozai, or that the show didn’t plan out him not killing the fire lord very well and just used the energy ending thing as a last minute escape out of the situation. But I completely disagree. Now a lot of people already know that the lion turtle has been foreshadowed a few times throughout the show, but that isn’t really what I want to focus on. In the episode “bitter work”, about halfway or less through the 2nd season, Toph teaches Aang earthbending while Iroh teaches Zuko the art of redirecting lightning. In the episode, Toph tells Aang that in order to earth bend he needs to be able to “stand his own ground”. Physically and also figuratively, this is a hard task for Aang. Toph criticizes Aang for thinking like an airbender and trying to find “a different angle”. This is directly demonstrated to Aang trying to look at stopping Ozai from a different angle. But it’s more than that. Aang is the avatar, which means he has to learn all of the elements. In the episode, Iroh tells Zuko that it is important to take inspiration out of all of the elements, and this is what he does. HANG ON I KNOW I’M TAKING FOREVER. Aang believes in what he was taught that all life is sacred and Aang especially holds onto the air nomad teachings because now they are gone and he feels responsible for it so he feels he must keep the culture and teachings of them in his heart and guide his life by them. By choosing to not take Ozai’s life, Aang stood his ground against everyone who told him otherwise, he stood up for what he believed in, and he stood up for his people. He thought like an airbender and tried looking at defeating the fire lord in a different way, and he also stood his ground for his morals and what he believed to be the right thing. This further connects to what the lion turtle told Aang, that he must have “an unbendable spirit” to energy-bend. And he did.

Aang is extremely underrated as a character, and is constantly getting shitted on, but I find him so fascinating. The depth of his arc can only be seen if you're actually paying attention. In my experience, those that are quick to write him off can only recognize complex characterzation if they're spelled out or in-your-face. His growth throughout the series was done subtly, with various internal battles.

The finale kind of ruint the potential. He conviniently learns a very, very rare skill to deal with his moraI dilemma. Writers have Aang enter Hyper sonic mode very unapologetically to easily win. And he the girl he has crushed on since the start of the show becomes his girlfriend... The same girl his last two scenes with her were trying to force himself on her(for the second time) and lashing out on her then walking off.

Aang also had abandonment issues which were highlighted in the episode where he deliberately hid a letter from Katara's and Sokka's father out of fear they'd leave him to be with their dad. There's also his attachment to his long gone culture that can have him act cold and cruel: a) He blows up at Toph when she rightfully points out that Appa shedding was leading Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee right to the sleep deprived Gaang despite trying to play mediator right before then. B) There was the time when Appa was kidnapped. He snapped at Toph despite her doing everything she could to stop it from happening while stopping the Great Library from sinking and burying the rest of the Gaang with it. C) And he flat out murdered the buzzard wasp for taking Momo even when Momo was no longer in danger of an *animal* being an animal and hunting for food. D) Probably would have murdered all of the Sand Benders that kidnapped and sold Appa if it weren't for Katara. E) And he's really standoffish to his friends (even rejecting a hug from Katara) until Hope was born. Aang is a really well defined and rounded character. With tons of flaws.

In the episode "Zuko Alone," the introductory tune subtly incorporates a variation of the Fire Nation theme. Unlike the typical powerful tones, the final two notes are higher-pitched, concluding with an upward inflection akin to a question's intonation at the end of a sentence. This choice is remarkably fitting for the episode's theme and atmosphere. In "The Desert" episode, when Sokka becomes intoxicated from cactus juice and exclaims, "Who lit Toph on fire," there's a subtle sound of fire igniting if you pay close attention. Most of the time during commercial breaks, Sokka tends to recap what occurred just before the interruption. Those are some examples, I hope you enjoyed them!

Aang is my favorite character in ATLA. Idc if people call me basic but he just is. I see so much depth that's subtle. And u have to pay attention to catch those subtle details. Yes Aang wasnt the only one with trauma or the only one suffering but the thing with Zuko or korra is that their trauma is more obvious. U watch ATLA as young teen and u can tell that Zuko has had it rough. And people love that zuko and korra had to suffer and prevailed but they miss out on aangs. When aang was angry and was acting "out of character" when appa got stolen, appa who isnt just a pet or a friend to aang but is more of a brother and one of the only remaining things from his airbending culture and is grieving, and its labeled being Bratty and Annoying by most people. And him not wanting to kill Ozai when in his culture its forbidden to kill, if u kill u arent considered monk anymore , when hes the last remaining one from his race and not wanting to kill ozai so he can preserve not only himself but his race going extinct is labeled selfish and cowardly by people. Aang was and will always be the most underrated character in ATLA which is INSANE cause hes literally the MC. He is like the foundation that goes unnoticed and unappreciated in ATLA. And Aangs Mental strength is actually insane for a 12 yr old. Yes he has his moments where hes down and thats because hes human. Yes he goofs around, and yes he isnt angsty or stoic most of the series but thats because his mentor is like that. U can see that Monk Gyatso prefers to be childish a lot of the time and has a childs sense of humor (when we see him and aang throw cakes at other old monks) it doesn't mean hes immature. He was mature and firm when other elders wanted Aang to just be the Avatar while Gyatso wanted him have a childhood. So aang chooses to be like him. All in all aang was genocide survivor and while he had his rough moments he still coped way better at a younger age and in a shorter amount of time than Zuko or korra ever did, who had way more time (they both had 3 yrs).

I think that aang is the most traumatized after the war. He is a monk who copes a lot of his grief through meditation etc and bottles up everything until he snaps. Through the war he basically has no time to grief since he is constantly busy of learning earthbending, firebending and accepting his duties as the avatar. I can imagine that especially in his teens/ young adult years when he had time to think things through he was really very lonely and depressed in a time. Her partner Rock gave a reality check and said “If there is no Robin Hood in this life then why do you become Robin Hood?” That’s where Batman comes in. No one was there to save Bruce from his greatest tragedy but rather than blame the world and believe that why should he do something when no one did for Him, Batman became that kind of Robin Hood.

this isn't related to the video topic, but i think in a way, aang going m.i.a. for 100 years resulted in avoiding a timeline where a succession of baby avatars would have been deleted and many other ge*nocides would have been committed for the purpose of deleting said baby avatar successions. the truth is at the time, aang was outmatched and did not stand a chance against sozin. aang being away for a century still resulted in countless deaths because he was being searched the entire time, but at least it wasn't as shockingly extreme had he stuck around, gotten deleted, resulting on the birth of a water bender avatar, that baby getting deleted along with the water tribe population, then the earth kingdom next, and probably ending with the fire bender baby avatar being kept as a prisoner by the fire nation, being indoctrinated by sozin, azulon, and so on. it would have been a far worse future had aang stuck around at the time. his psychological, mental, emotional, and overall unpreparedness in terms of bending abilities and avatar powers led to the balancing out of circumstances by making him have that seemingly knee-jerk reaction of running away. i think it was more of a cosmic event that he felt strongly that he didn't want the responsibilities and was basically scared of the burden of being the avatar. had the world been a lot less in conflict, aang would not have felt the need to pull away or shirk his responsibilities, because having more time means that the odds weren't incredibly tipped out of proportion against him. the prowess of the fire nation at the time against his own skills just was too out of balance, so in a deeper sense, his instinct to run away was more wise that he could ever imagine. bravery is not a real stand-in for lack of competence, so had he been braver, he would have still totally died at the time. edit: worst of all, had aang stuck around and stood his ground against sozin, he is likely gonna go into the avatar state just by instinct and if he gets deleted while in the avatar state because he would not know how to be careful yet, this would result in the permanent end of the avatar cycle.

The Avatar Netflix series shows exactly why the whimsy is necessary. As a writer I have learned that just being dark for darks sake all the time. Makes the reader get very accustomed to that tone. Think of WA2 why did pilots keep score. Because they had become desensitized to the horror of the war.

I believe with Guru Pathik, I think the lesson was supposed to be about the difference between love and attachment. Attachment does not equal love, they are two separate ideas. "If you love something, set it free." Love is freeing and a mutual choice, not possessive and jealous. Look at how Aang reacted when he saw the Ember Island Players act out the crystal catacombs scene. I only learned that attachment doesn't equate to love in adulthood so having a 12/13 year old have to learn is difficult to say the least. He has an immature view of love which I would've loved to have seen him grapple with in Book 4: Air.

2:15 Hermione from Harry Potter was FAR from perfect... in the books. It's obvious that the thing she has more than the others is book smarts, and she can't handle stressful practical situations very well, and it's made very clear on several occasions that she, like Harry and unlike Ron, didn't grow up in the wizarding world. In the movies, they smoothed all those rough edges, including her looks. In the movies she is way too perfect.

Huh. So many people throw shad at sword art for kirito being bland. Please actualy explain how he's bland?
@sparky21737
@sparky21737 4 ай бұрын
I think the problem with kirito is that his character is similar to pretty much all isakei characters. It is kind of by design as it is meant to be self insert. He is overpowered, has very little in the way of character development, kind of ends up flaw scrubbed. The story ends up warping to him where things that other people should be able to solve suddenly can't because they need kirito
@scroletyper8286
@scroletyper8286 4 ай бұрын
@sparky21737 The arguments u listed are the same ones echoed across the internet, but they aren't really true. Speaking only to the aincrad arc for the moment. The arguments played out are Too bland or similar to other isekai characters. Kirito is given some of the most unique characteristics of any isekai protagonist out there. Mostly an iconic rage, similar to Shonen protags but that wasn't the complaint. And he was a gaming and pc need. Note most isekai protags are just players while kirito was a tech nerd not just a gamer knowing even the inns and outs of how the nerve gear functioned. He also shows a genuine relaxation during peace moments throughout the show and isn't constantly flustered by every other female character he talks too. The show may give fan service for the girls but only too try to be his girlfriend before the end of aincrad and he actualy chose one unlike all other isekai protags. He also deals with survivers guilt and ptsd (especially I'm the events of gungale but we aren't discussing that right now) so I don't see him really as a bland viewer insert here cause I know nothing about how game consoles and pcs actually work. A bland character wouldn't have such a specific trait. Overpowered. Can we even use this argument in anime? Even so asuna and Klein both show similar skill levels to kirito not to mention some members of laughing coffin. This particular issue is only a consideration do to screen time issues. No character development. He goes from loner surviver to die for my wife or even random strangers as he processes survivers guilt and ptsd. How is that not development. Flaw scrubbed (im assuming this means he eother doesnt have flaws or else loses them by the end of the series) Thats kinda what stories are about. The protag has a problem and he overcomes it or changes in some relation to it so he can truly face the challenge at the end. Solves all of the stories problems even when another character should have been able to accomplish the task. I am an advocate for Klein screen time and my boy agil. Hate the new asuna show gave agils moments against illfang to their new oc. But at the end of the day the story is a out the one who rose up to defeat the villain not his sidekick. This is like complaining a batman movie should be about Robin. Can the story be good with Robin? Yes. But the dark knight trilogy didn't have Robin and no one complained about that. Why does kirito have to have a side kick? The shows about him and what he did in a terrible situation. I think it would be better with more of the other characters but it isn't required for the show to be good. Admittedly some things are wired such as the exclusive duel wielding skill. That wasn't necessary. Anyway that's all I got for you right now I hope we can enjoy a breakdown of this topic.

Idk if this is the reason I keep coming back. I personally find Aang quite annoying a lot of the time. I understand he needs development and he’s so young and has so much pressure he must deal with, but the way he goes about some situations really make him difficult to root for. I like every character in the Gaang more than him and Azula and obviously Iroh too - I find them to be more interesting and compelling

Aang and Katara were always two of the worst characters in the show for me, even though I grew up with this show. It was them who were dragging the show down significantly, due to the fact that both of them are moralists and hypocrites. Sometimes, consciously choosing not to change who you are at your core is as much of a development as the opposite. Changing for the sake of change is dumb. And anyway, I don’t know how you can say that season 3 Aang is not more grown up than season 1 Aang. Just because he didn’t stop being silly (oh no, a teenager being silly, stop the presses!), doesn’t mean he didn’t grow up.
