The Genius™ of Ang Lee's Hulk

Before the MCU butchered Bruce Banner as a character, before Marvel wasted millions to animate She-Hulk twerking, and before we had to see Professor Hulk dab on the big screen, we had Ang Lee's Hulk. This was my favorite movie as a child, but does it still hold up today? After a decade, I revisit this film with my brother and discover what may be a GENIUS work of art, or an extremely goofy comic book movie; both work.

On god it's better than modern day shit. For 2003 this stuff looks like it was from 3 years ago with how detailed those textures are. At least for the hulk and the hand scene with his dad. Sure the Mo-Cap can be a bit iffy though.

There was a very highly reviewed video game about the Hulk made for this movie for Xbox. It was called Hulk Ultimate Destruction. Later the same company made also a gory open world game called Prototype and they reused animations for it.

Ultimate Destruction isn't based on the movie, but there was a actual tie-in game just called Hulk. Ultimate Destruction came out a few years later. Ultimate Destruction fucking slapped

For me this movie has really improved over the years. I think I can honestly say that that many scenes in this film made me think about them over the years. It would have been so much better if it didn’t have anything to do with Marvel’s Hulk.

I've always been a defender of this movie, comic nerds can go fts! Ang Lee, unlike the Russo brothers, took the Hulk seriously and wasn't just focusing on how much property the Hulk can destroy. While the CGI looks dated by today's standards, I'm still amazed with the lighting and animations for something that was rendered in 2002.

The reason the crazy dad says stuff about “religion infecting humanity’s soul” is because he views himself as a genius who in this version of Hulk’s mythology is responsible for creating the genes mixture. He thought he’d be the one to possess those animals qualities but instead his son gets him by inheriting the genetics. I think he thinks the government with their ethical concerns are responsible for suppressing his experiments which is why he lived in squalor and without scientific accolades. He withheld the information from the government which is why the colonel initially thinks that Bruce Banner himself has done something illegal. Another reason is because Bruce Banner gets his Hulk genes activated by accident when he tries to protect someone which is the human ethics part. So his dad is unhappy.

The editing techniques you're talking about in the beginning owe their roots to 50's and 60's Czech New Wave films. Check out the film "Cremator" by Juraj Herz for more disorienting cuts and frame shifts like that from 1969
