We asked Michel Legrand about it seven years ago with a friend. He said they "buried" this version (it's the word he employed - enterré in French) because him and Demy thought it was bad (at the very least not as good as the French version). Would love to get the dubbed version though!!

Both sisters were also dubbed in the original version since they were actresses but not singers. CD has the voice of Anne Germain and FD the voice of Claude Parent

This video is AWESOME. i'm french and absolute fan of the work of Demy/Legrand. I'm also an absolute fan of lost media and it's such a pity that the KZbin channels who posted the Englsih version isn't replying. What I found very interesting is that they made the effort on the french version with English subtitles to make the song subtitles lyrics rhymes, it's as if there's 1 original French lyrics + 2 English lyricsbook (1 is the subtitles and 1 is the one they recorded and filmed). THE only KNOWLEDGE that I can bring to you is that for "La Chanson de Maxence" (which is my one of my favorite song in the movie) there's been 2 english adaptation: 1 is the one from the original film ENGLISH soundtrack ('MAXENCE's SONG') & the 2nd is the same melody but different lyrics called "YOU MUST BELIEVE IN SPRING" lyrics by Alan and Marilyn BERGMAN, which had many covers especially a wonderful one by an artist very close to Michel Legrand: the legendary BARBRA STREISAND on her 2009 album "Love is the answer". P.S: Your segment on Françoise Dorléac is very moving, she was an absolute movie icon. On the Agnès Varda BTS documentary, you can see the beautiful relation she had on the set of 'The Young Girls...' with her sister Catherine (Francoise saying out loud on the set: 'My sister's breast is getting lower and lower! What's happening?!' Catherine replies: 'Don't dream, it won't happen to you!' Françoise: 'Well I didn't have kids yet' Catherine: 'Well, it won't happened overnight with the face you have' and Françoise shoots 'Oh she's AWFUL this one'. THEN they lovingly cuddle eachothers🥲). Deneuve rarely speaks about her sister on interviews but you can tell that she's still very moved by this loss.

I worked with a movie theater manager in the 80s, who remembered Young Girls of Rochefort premiering also in San Francisco in the 60s. he had a promo album and the poster from the event. he had made me a copy of the album so it never occurred to me how rare. this was until I tried to seek it out decades later! Great video!!

If Criterion does a 4K edition of the film in French, that would be great, but if they can find any good, complete copy of the English version, that would be remarkable and a 70mm blow-up print means that the French version has a 6-track magnetic stereo soundmaster. Depending on how that was recorded, those same tracks could be used to a 6-track English or other language version as well. No matter what, your video will be a priceless, key part of finding and saving this gem. Thank you!

Working in an office absolutelly overerloaded with soo mutch work that they are unable to do because burocracy and slow pase of the obsolet sistem. At least one airing I found on Australian television was on Channel 9 on Sunday January 29, 1989 at 1pm. It had a 2hr 30min run time and a date of 1968. Was the US/English dub version released in 1968? ETA: Okay had a further look. It was broadcast in Australia multiple times in the 1970's as well. In 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1979. As well as in the 1990's in 1991 and 1992. Which seems to be the last year it was shown. In 1991 it aired on ABC, a tax payer funded channel that aired programs without commercials. It had a 2hr run time. No idea if this was the English dub though.

A story somewhat related to this film's situation - in the 1950s and '60s a number of European films were co-productions of different studios in different countries, and they also used actors from different countries, usually chosen because they had some international fame or at least recognition. When shooting such movies, the performers usually all just spoke in their native languages, which didn't matter since the entire film would be dubbed in various languages for release. I remember years ago seeing an undubbed clip from such a movie, which I think was an Italian sword & sandal epic, and the actors were speaking to each other in 3 or 4 languages. Obviously in such situations the performers really didn't know what the others were saying to them, which I'm sure could be awkward or strange.

The 1931 film "Charlie Chan Carries On" was filmed in both English and Spanish, with two different casts, but unlike most such situations the original English version has been lost while the Spanish one has survived.

The dub never played major cities. I know you're just parroting what you've read and heard, but I owned a 16mm scope IB Tech print of the dubbed version, so I know it VERY well. It certainly wasn't a secret to people I knew because I showed it all the time. Let's go back to the channel that started all this, Rochefort Clips. What he found were some awful pan and scan clips from a TV print. When he says he got the English soundtrack from some file sharing site, he's just dopey - the complete English soundtrack was released on CD several times - in a Legrand set, in a Legrand/Demy set - however, that's not the entire story. The English soundtrack was released on LP at the time of the film's release, but only in the UK on British Philips label, which I still have. But the version on CD is NOT that album, it's a complete remix by Legrand with tons of dialogue and it's nowhere near as good as that original LP. When you speak of the "vibrant colors" on the Blu-ray or DVD, no, the entire transfer is way too yellow and looks nothing like the IB Technicolor prints. The Widow Demy should never have been allowed anywhere near her husband's films because she knew nothing about film restoration at all. The son is now overseeing everything and we're supposed to get a new transfer of that and then hopefully they''ll redo Rochefort. As to the English version and why it's not included on the DVD/Blu-ray releases - because it never occurred to the Widow Demy to ask about it - I have no doubt it is sitting safely in the Warner Bros. vaults here in the US - the English version negative and soundtrack. It's not hard to find this stuff out but she could not be bothered. Let's continue - where you say the dub is "faster" - no it is not - whoever posted that TV clip has sped up the track - it's so obvious it's laughable. Her hand is NOT cut off in the English version - you are showing a pan and scan clip where you are completely missing the sides of the scope image. The girl outside IS in the scene if you watch the English version in SCOPE - again, you are missing half the image in the pan and scan TV print. It's you "YOUvonn" - that is not how you pronounce Yvonne - EEvahn. Happily, I'm telling you the story :) You now have actual facts and you shoud do an addendum to the video. Finally, if you watch Oklahoma you'll see the exact same thing - the Todd-AO version was short first, then separately they shot the scene or song over again in Cinemascope - with tons of minor differences in staging.

Sometimes Gemini is pronounced gem-uh-nee, the NASA engineers from the 60's called it the gem-uh-nee program.

Saw "The Young Girls of Rochefort" many years ago - one film review comment which really stood out to me was it being described as a "candy-coloured film". Love Catherine Deneuve. So terribly sad about her sister Francoise. :(

In Japan, it was apparently a huge success - and for that reason, one of the first (or maybe the first) release of the video/ laser disc was released in the late 80s, early 90s. It was from a generic French print, with scratches and all, but still very watchable, and was beautiful. Needless to say, despite the "interesting" plot twists, it is one of my favorite films of all time. With that said, I am also a film historian, and I have acquired the 3rd reel of this film in 16mm in English some time back (the last 47 mins of the film). The color has turned and is pan and scan, but still it's Rochefort. A friend of mine actually had (so he told me) that he had a 16mm IB Tech scope English version of this film, but he sold it some years back..

So in the UK & USA the 70mm version WAS the english filmed version and the subtitled version came later. So it WAS published and the negative or even prints sit in a vault somewhere. US distributors sometimes demanded a camera film negative of their own so the movie has to be shot twice for the english version. That seemed to have happened so it is not a "dub" but an "english version" of the complete movie. Another movie a few years later that was shot twice french/english was THE SICILIAN CLAN (1969) with both versions on the Blu-ray Disc.

The English version of A Pair of Twins is so catchy. Yeah, the Gemini mispronunciation is a bit weird, but as far as a translation that scans with the song, it's pretty good.

I appreciate Yvonne's Song is available here on YT at least because I've launched into that one an amount of times I could not do if I was forced to sing it in French. 😅 I'd go rabid if the full dub was found!

I have this feeling there’s a print simply available in a vault at the distributor/studio but they just don’t even know there’s a demand for it. The reason why I think this is: the original English soundtrack was released by a major record company and isn’t crazy rare. Besides, it saw a major release in the USA. There were thousands of reels made of it - they don’t vanish into thin air. That said - was there ever a 8mm/16mm distributed for rentals in the late 60s? May be a place to look.

Luckily, the English language song tracks were released in the 50th Anniversary CD box set by Universal/Decca France. Disc 3 of the five 5 disc set is the English version of The Young Girls of Rochefort with 17 song tracks in stereo and it's quite a clever translation. The English version was shown on a network TV late-night movie at least once when I was a kid in the 70's.

The Young Girls of Rochefort is easily one of my all time favorites and quite possibly the easiest movie to watch. I only discovered it a little over a year ago and I’ve seen it at least 10 times already. Probably listened to the soundtrack hundreds of times despite not even speaking French 😭 Needless to say I’ve been extremely interested in this dub resurfacing. It just breaks my heart to think of Jacques Demy, one of history’s greatest artists having made something that’s now lost. I mean it’s hard enough finding a lot of his films already. I hope one day Criterion will release a complete Jacques Demy box set (like they’ve done with his amazing wife) so all his films can be easily found and seen in one place. This could also include the missing dub of Young Girls and maybe even the Umbrellas of Cherbourg one as well. Anyway, enough ranting 😭 this was a great video and I’m glad to see more people getting the word out

Slightly off topic but Audrey Hepburn was only cast in the now forgotten Monte Carlo Baby because she could speak both English and French. It was to be shot simultaneously scene by scene in both languages to provide 2 versions. On location in Monte Carlo, Audrey happened to walk past Colette, who didn’t know she was a British actress, and who thought she’d be perfect to play her character Gigi on Broadway. From there she got Roman Holiday, won their Oscar and the rest is history.

Francoise Dorleac was a bigger star than her sister at the time this movie was filmed. You're calling her "Francois" the male version of the name by dropping the "s" but that "s" is pronounced in french (more like a "z" say fran-SWAHZ) now you have to dub the correct pronunciation in 😆

I bought the French soundtrack album when I was in high school (1967 or 68). It was the original French version, and I listened to it constantly to perfect my French pronunciation. Warner Bros. released the film in 70mm in the U.S. around that time, but it never made it to my hometown, Houston, Texas. Several years later, in early 1972 I was thrilled to read in my local newspaper that the English version was going to be shown by ABC on its Sunday night movie national broadcast, but then I read further that my local ABC affiliate decided to preëmpt the movie for a local football game. I was so mad that I was going to miss seeing the movie for the first time that I called a cousin in New York City to tell him I was inviting myself to visit him that weekend so I could see the movie. So, yes, the English language version was broadcast nationally by the ABC network on a Sunday night in early 1972. I didn’t get to see the original French version on a movie screen until March 1981 when I saw it at the Vagabond Theatre, a revival house in Los Angeles. About a dozen years later I was working in the MGM film library and thought to call a colleague at Warner Bros. to see if there was a video master of the English version. He said there were no longer any elements from the film in their vaults. Who knows where they might be now, if they even still exist?

This is fascinating, thank you. I still recall watching "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" in its English-language dubbed version on US/NYC television. Considering that "Cherbourg" was far more successful in the US than "Rochefort," I'm surprised that nothing of that English dub of "Cherbourg" has turned up.

I'm brazilian and TV Globo are all the same station, what differs is the state. When the movies are shown in some capital, they tend to show in all capital areas. So if a movie is shown in São Paulo, he is going to be shown in Brazilia and Rio

I found someone online who sent to me a burned CD of the complete English soundtrack around 15 years ago. I've always been very curious about the English version of the film but like you couldn't find it anywhere. I am from the Philippines and I want to confirm to you that my uncle tells me that in 1972, when the former President Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law here, all the TV networks were sequestered and during that whole time in the black out, one of the sequestered tv networks just kept on broadcasting the English version of YGF on a loop!!! Sadly, this is way before the VHS or Betamax existed so there doesn't exist any copy of the English version in the Philippines. May I suggest, why don't you take a chance and talk to the estate of Agnes Varda or Jacques Demy and ask them if they still have a copy of this English version on film or video? Anyway, wanted to thank you for all the interesting information I got from your video. Thank you very much!

This is wonderful. I've always been curious about the brief clips that were on KZbin. Two odd things--one is Grover Dale is on my Facebook and I asked him about the English version (like if he was ever approached to do his own singing--though Legrand basically ALWAYS liked to use his own session vocalists) and he was not AT ALL aware of it, or if he was he had completely forgotten it. Which made me wonder if it got much of a release in the US at all--wouldn't Grover who lived and worked there have been aware? The other interesting tidbit is in the great CD box set of all of Legrand and Demy's collaborations, the complete English soundtrack is included and in the booklet accompanying the set, Legrand says he thinks the vocals are better sung than on the French one. The vocals are good even if I have issue with some of the lyrics (who says "Gemini" like "Jiminy?) Comparing the two edits of the songs does make me think of how Oklahoma! filmed in Todd AO and the CinecaScope version using different takes.

Am I correct in assuming that the film negative of the English version exists, and it's just that it has not been released on DVD?

My Philips (USA) 2 LP soundtrack album LP PCC 2-626 includes a printout of the French lyrics with English version lyrics in the next column. I saw the movie In London at The Coliseum, blown up to 70mm with an interval. After a short release, the french version reappeared at the tiny Paris Pullman cinema in South Kensington. There was no UK release of the soundtrack.

Regarding the mispronunciation of the word gemini... Broadway composer would do the same thing in his early 60s show I Can Get It For You Wholesale in the song When Gemini Meets Capricorn. Its always intrigued me as well as it was the only time before today that I've heard it pronounced it gem-i-nee.

I still prefer to hear it in French.

FWIW the dubbed version was seen again, when it was broadcast in the US on ABC TV in 1972. That was my introduction to the film.
