The thing is, D.Gray Man is pretty old title. At that time it might have been overrated actually. I started to watch anime around 2008-2009 and I remember people were talking about 3 shounens: Soul Eater, Reborn, and D.Gray Man. All those teenagers who are in community for several years, 5 tops, they have so many shounens, they don't look back. And so they miss D.Gray Man in particular.

The primary reason why we love Allen Walker as a character so much is that apart from his hugely distinct uniqueness apart from other Shonen protagonists, Allen is a melancholic character, a temperament we rarely see in protagonists. His more emotional and reflective rather than the noisy, hot-headed and idiotic characters we see in other series. He inspires contemplation rather than trying to act like “the cool guy” in every single episode. Traditional shonen characters capture how guys want to be and act but Allen Walker, however, captures how they really feel inside.

@alfmni IMO it’s not just the polite gentleman mask vs the more familiar tone he has since regained (and which is Red-like, especially since Red was just a little kid) - it’s the overall introspective nature of Allen, which we see even when he’s alone.

Too me one of the best things of this series is everytime Allen says: "I am Allen Walker, I am an exorcist". That quote is so interesting, because it feels like Allen also says it to himself everytime he says to some character. Almost as if he needs to say it, because he doesn't have anything else in his life. That makes everything more depressing and interesting in terms of Allens mental condition

I think what draws people to D.Gray-Man is that it's one of the few shounens (if not the only one) that's completed a perfect bait and switch. From the beginning, it seems like your stereotypical anime. Even similar "bait and switches" like HxH had some foreshadowing to allude to some of the world's darker tones, but there isn't anything like that in DGM. Then, when people start dying, it hits like a truck. It's my number one series for a multitude of ways, but I think the biggest is in how, almost like Gintama, it seems to skip genres. The first act is mainly your stereotypical action shounen like Bleach, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Fire Force, etc. Where characters fight and use some good worldbuilding to draw people in. Then, when the first act ends (when *that* scene happens, if you've seen the show/read the manga you know what I mean. I'll give you a hint: bamboo) it completely changes to something *way* darker. People start dying, characters fail in their missions, and the plot becomes more convoluted. Then, when the next *that* scene happens (hint:14) DGM *really* takes a hard turn into seinen territory a-la Tokyo Ghoul. There's still action in the series, but now its mainly focusing on the psychology of the main character and his evolution/character development. It's truly insane how much work has gone into it. And it helps that Allen Walker is probably one of the most well-written MCs in the genre. Hell, currently in the manga, none of us knows if he's gonna end up as a good guy, or the main antagonist, and that's something that's simply sublime.

@SoulReaper 85 I watched it on release way back and I also thought that adaptation was pretty much a disgrace. There were two stories crammed in it that deserved at least a season each and were underdeveloped because of the lack of screen time. All in all it was too rushed and a big waste of such a perfect tragedy. And the worst part is that there is no way the writers didn't notice it. I'm just an interested fan and even I noticed that all the heavy plotlines and twists simply did not have the time to get set up and presented, it was just infodumped on the audience and left there.

@plzleavemealone9660
@plzleavemealone9660 Жыл бұрын
I think that's the biggest problem the show/manga has tho. Kandas story is the ONLY question answered in like what? 20 years of it's run time. And the answer to the question of "who's kanda looking for" in the very first episode he appeared in is actually just even more questions. Hell we don't even know what the earl and the Noah actually want after all those years. It's just more and more questions. The existence of Nea isn't an answer to a question, it's just a bunch of new questions. When we do get answers to questions it's always a few pages after the question was asked. Meanwhile the show has just become a huge pile of "why"s and "how"s.

D.Gray-Man has haunted me for damn near 20 years now, I always find my mind drifting back to it no matter how long I let new chapters build up for bingeing. The mysteries and the characters and the world design are all just so unforgettable, I won't be able to rest until the very final chapter is complete. Every new twist in the tale is so mind boggling, and the mysteries on top of mysteries inside of mysteries makes it easy to obsess over. Like how Allen Walker can't even BE Allen Walker without time travel shenanigans, or the great secret the Bookmen know, or why Tykki Mikk looks so much like young Mana, or, or, or....! Also I definitely agree with you that the first anime series is well worth the watch. Many, if not most? of the episodes had little end credit shorts that were SUPER cute and hilarious, absolutely worth hunting them down!

i havent followed dgrayman in years, but even i never hesitate when people ask me what my most recommended anime/manga is, from someone who stopped watching for maybe 5-10 years already since my childhood. It's always dgrayman first, alongside shaman king and few other rom coms for the luls. I absolutely love music, and I would attribute a huge chunk to the emotional power DGM's soundtrack has! First time i heard the 14th song again, possibly 7 years after the first time i heard it while watching on a fat ancient TV screen, i could remember almost every line note for note even if not for word. Hoshino really knocked everything out of the park with this and ill never not love DGM even if i never have the time to reread everything from the start to refresh again. Always in love, and i wish best of health and happiness to the author, for this absolutely mind blowing masterpiece it is what she deserves

I remember there were a bit of Allen Walker's origin reveal. Allen himself was the one who propose the idea to house Nea inside himself. With Marion as the co-conspirator to ensure that Allen would survive long enough to Nea to reemerge . However, it wasn't the child Allen that you see in the circus, but an adult Allen. Adult Allen who was wearing long white coat that reminded me of the science division in the Black Order. Then it jumped to Allen being a child in the circus with Marion observing him interacting with Mana from a top a tree branch in secret. When Nea first appeared and look into the mirror, he noted that Allen became younger than the last time he saw him. This part is still left unanswered.

Give almost as much screen time to the 'bad guys' as it gives to the 'good guys'. Noah actuallt feel like a family who care about each other. There are so many times in D. Gray-Man I have cried and mourned along with the characters facing their trials, not only because it's 'supposed to be' sad, but because you can actually empathize with what is being felt, not to mention a character's possibility for failure is very real. Hoshino writes her characters in a way that makes you fall in love with them, even when they're aloof and sometimes insufferably stubborn. To this day I can't read or watch what happened between Kanda and Karma because that tragic concept of love transcending time, gender, death, and reality hits so hard that it hurts. You rarely see a story in Shonen Jump that hits such a heavy topic and issue. It's not a story where you know for sure if you leave and come back that everyone will still be okay and alive and well. It's not like Naruto where you know you can come back at anytime and Naruto and the other two will definitely be alive because, well, plot, I guess? Kanda's got a limited amount of his own time, who knows who will win between Allen and the 14th, just who will Lenalee choose to pick a side with, and where will Lavi land his alliances with- exorcists or bookmen? They're written and portrayed like real life people who will struggle with making complex decisions of which their answer will have an actual consequence that will affect not just their lives but also world around them. And that's what makes it so good, and that's why to this day I still find myself thinking of Allen, humming Lala's Lullaby or the 14th's melody, or checking Hoshino's instagram to see how she's doing. I would love to see another anime adaptation/reboot that would boost it's popularity outside of Japan again, since I think there are so many people out there that would love it, but just don't know about it/see it's not popular in the west, therefore think it's not good. Hopefully one day while we're still alive we'll see it happen again.

I think another lovely thing about the series is how patient it is with its reveals (spoilers!). The fact that Allen is masking so much and is putting on a front to outrun who he used to be and grief itself is a fairly lategame reveal. It gives him a real complexity and sense of being an unreliable narrator for his own emotions that heightens the tone of the story. Kanda's past is held in the wings for 200 chapters, not blown for cheap drama. I also love that consistently, Innocence becoming stronger involves questioning fate and a character's role in the war, which beautifully ties it to development and the themes of the story.

Perfect deconstruction of DGM and why it’s such a great shonen. It’s very unfortunate the series has become underrated in the west. The series has always reminded me of a sort of softer version of Berserk(in more ways than one because the series has so many publishing issues and inconsistent chapters). Guts and Allen from the very beginning, from the moment they were born, are constantly struggling psychologically and are constantly struggling against their destinies. The worlds they live in constantly give them so much shit and tell them to give up, they shouldn’t exist but yet they do and they don’t give in. Allen’s story will probably have it end with Allen disappearing from the world, not actual death(maybe metaphorical if you want to argue) but I have feeling when the final villain is defeated, whoever it is(maybe Apocrophos or God himself, that’s my own theory) he will disappear. Just like Lavi had predicted, they will probably have this sad and heartfelt goodbye, Hoshino has built Allen as a sort of martyr and once he has completed his journey, ending the Noah/Akuma and getting rid of Innocence, Allen will have nothing left. He’s walking a path he does not see, Allen sees no future for himself past defeating Akuma and Innocence. I feel like all of D. Gray-Man is the title of the book Lavi writes to tell Allen’s story, so everyone will know and remember his story. I really do wish this series hadn’t faded to obscurity in the west, it really is amazing. Very happy to see a video like this. Also I love Hoshino’s art, like you said, the art is beautiful, it’s so good. Hoshino can run with other great manga artists like Kubo, Oda, Miura etc. I also will admit while I love this series there are some problems this series has in power scaling but I won’t get into it as I rather keep this comment positive.

Since most people here are dropping spoilers like hot potatoes, that means I might as well as talk about it. The most mind-boggling thing I came across reading this wasn't even the Mana-Millenium Earl plot twist but the fact that Road geniunely asked Cross to kill her. I mean I thought all apostles do their wiping-out-humanity thing from the bottom of their hearts because they belive it to be right, not because they were forced to since it's their purpose. I honestly feel bad for them.

I think that maybe the name “goodbye to Allen Walker” is not necessarily talking about the disappearance of the protagonists, but maybe it’s just metaphor for saying goodbye to the mask he is wearing. Because in recent chapters it was revealed that after losing his mind, Mana doesn’t seem to remember Red (the first name of the protagonist) and he confuses Red for his dog called Allen. Because of guilt for hurting Mana and the death of the dog, Red takes the name Allen for the sake of helping Mana. This is the moment where he truly starts to lose his true nature hiding it behind a mask. Telling his story to Kanda, I think is the moment he starts to take of the mask and maybe thus the arc is called “Saying goodbye to A.W.”, because he is stoping his play in front of other people and revealing himself. Also when Cross was killed and Tim delivered the message to Allen of Cross saying to stop wearing Mana’s mask is also foreshadowing of the death of Allen Walker as a mask and the rebirth of Red or some other version of the protagonist that is the best of both Allen and Red. Because it sure isn’t easy to turn back to Red after all these ears playing Allen. That has changed him and he will never be again Red. But also he can’t be Allen forever not if he wants to unravel the truth behind the war. I’m positive that the title in itself may mean the disappearance of A.W. But maybe not in the way of death of the protagonist but metaphorically. Also it is possible that Allen, Nea, Mana and the Earl may merge into one persona but I would rather believe that Allen will find a way to bring peace to Noa clan like he does to the demons, because as Cross says this isn’t their world anymore and Noa are only the vengeful spirits left lingering from the past.

Honestly I would prefer a new season once the manga is fully done. I saw a lot of people saying that they want a total remake like HunterxHunter, or what's happening nowadays with Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken... I mean my first issue with Hallow, apart form the graphics, the chara designs, the seiyuu, and the animation that aren't what we could expect 10 years after the old anime, is it doesn't adapt a lot, and even if it does show what's important to the story, the pacing is weird. (I don't really remember but I thought that the episode with Cross Marian and Apocryphios was too sudden. Man, I really didn't like Hallow and I always tell to people to read the manga, or watch the 1st anime (which is as good thanks to the soundtracks, the only fail beeing the animation and pacing), but always read the manga when you come to the Hallow part. (I mean the darkest arc has the most vibrant colors in the anime, it's a miss, it doesn't bring it justice) That's just my opinion of course, but I was nearly as pissed from Hallow than the Berserk 2016 adaptation... (when you see the openings you can tell it'll be good, and then surprise, it's not)

I know D Gray Man since my highschool years, because a friend let me borrow his mangas. I fall into it pretty quickly, and start rp with some oc on forums during at least 8 years. It has a powerfull imagery, and a lot of mysteries that has allowed us to play with it and built our own story. I didn't have a lot of theories on the ongoing plot, mainly because I'm not a theorist and that I'm more a passive reader. Except some rp, I never do any fanart, and I never really talk about the manga except to share my love with it with my friends. Spoiler I did see in advance that Mana and the Earl were the same character the moment I see the human face of the later. It looks like too much the Mana we see in Allen's flashback when he is on the Ark's piano room. After that, I start to ask myself how it was possible. Allen see Mana dying in front of him, litteraly, so how the Earl manage to resurrect a soul that was his all along ? Who really is Allen ? Are his memories false ? It could be for what we know, as a result of stress, trauma and the fact that he is the host of Neah. As for the future... I think that Allen will be revealed as the former Bookman's apprentice, which disappear before Bookman takes Lavi. We see Neah talking to someone in a flashback, someone who propose to let him take his body, no matter the cost. We see Marian be very surprise when he see "Allen" for the first time, far more young that what he expect. We know by Sheryl Kamelot that Bookman was very close to the Noah's clan before Neah kill most of them, so close that he threatens Lavi's life to gain information on the 14th. For the Earl, Mana and Neah, I wonder what was the first reason for the Earl to scind himself into two boys. Why not just one ? Was he trying to stop himself to becoming a pillar and bring the apocalypse once again ? Are the brothers the two faces of the same coin ? Neah didn't make any alliances with the Innocence, since Apocryphos try to absorb Allen, and to be honest, after what we saw, I can understand why. Neah had mutliple partisans on both camps, so, what was his proposition on this war ? Nobody is really given a choice to become a Noah or an Exorcist, it's the Memory/Innocence that choose you, which make them the "chosen" ones of an hidden war. Exorcists can't even doubt the innocence or they are threatens by rejection, the Noah's Memory is slowly eating their host. Did Neah try to stop the war, or did he try to change the power dynamic by bringing a third choice, one where Innocence and Noah need to be destroyed to free humanity ? I find this very interesting. The setting in a 19th century, even an alternative one, is perfect for questions on religious themes. I'm waiting for the next chapters to see where this is going. The mysteries are so interesting, and so entertaining.

The whole pierrot is based on a determined clown while sometimes Allen wears the Clown's mask ("Mana's mask"). Meanwhile, the Sword of Exorcism is a reverse version of both Mana and Nea's swords. Some people are hating on Lenalee for being annoying and constantly crying, but for me even as a kid watching this series, I understand her situation. Seeing her comrades suffer and she can't do anything to help them, I totally understand her reason to be whiny. And let's not forget that she's still young and the others too. So being in a young age and treated as a weapon to win a war, how can you blame her? Their struggles are the thing that makes their characters feel real and relatable. And I love it.

D.Gray-Man is a show that I picked up at random many years ago because I was looking for something to fill my time over summer break in high school, and honestly, it's never disappointed me. The characters, the settings, the overall themes are so rich that I don't mind how long we have to wait to see what happens next. I had finally convinced my husband to watch the series right before Hallow came out and we made some time to watch it together, and he fell in love with it just as much as I did. I really think this show has something for almost anyone. And just like another comment said, they pull the bait and switch really well. At the beginning of the series, it seems like it's going to be any other hero's story, that we're going to see Allen grow alongside his friends. And while that is true at least on a base level, there's so much more there that we never could have seen in the beginning. Hoshino took her time with each of these characters, their backstories, personalities, and you can really see it shine through. And then the darker aspects start to come in; people start dying, you learn of Lenalee's background at the Black Order and the mental breakdowns she had before her brother arrived there, and that shows just why Komui is so overprotective of her in the present, even if it's initially played off as a funny protective brother trope. *Spoilers Here that you didn't discuss* In the episode "Homecoming" where they all make it home from the ark thanks to Allen's piano playing, the moment where they lift up signs saying "welcome home" got me. And then when Lenalee ran to Komui like she had been away from him for so long, like she never thought she'd see him again, oh my god, I cry every time I see it, even to this day. This is one of the most long-winded comments I've written in a while, but I absolutely love this show and manga with everything that's in me.

Amazing video, wish you didn't praise Hallow though. What we don't need is another continuation but rather a reboot and I'll die on that hill. Hallow was pretty bad and lots of important dialogue were missing. In the manga Allen literally asks Mana if he's going to get revenge for the dead dog, in Hallow Allen doesn't even know what happened, they bastardised Hoshino's writing here. Even the animation was off for me, look at Apocryphos vs Tyki and tell me thats a well choreographed fight. I'll acknowledge that the art was an improvement to the original anime though at least. A reboot would make this series more talked about, it literally goes under the radar because its a series that takes long breaks causing the anime to also suffer. A well executed reboot would change this issue. Furthermore Hunter x Hunter didn't even need a reboot but it ended up with one anyway. Not only that, Hallow came way to close to the current stuff in the manga due to it sandwiching several chapters into only 13 episodes. We deserve better than what TMS Entertainment had to offer us.

Also look at the backlog sales the manga for HxH ended up with just off the 2011 anime reboot. D.Gray-Man could really benefit if it were to get a reboot.

I don't know if I want a reboot :'( I really like the original cast ( the first anime was amazing... though there is a lot of episodes that didn't follow the manga I like the fact that we see the fight between Tyki and Daisya -even if it was short- or this kind of moments... ) ... Well if D Gray Man become more popular thanks to it reboot, it would be good if new fans give a chance to the first anime because it really deserves it ! sorry for my bad english

To be honest, thank you for this video. D.Gray-man is one of my favourite works. It was my first manga I read without knowing the anime. I spent such a good times reading this manga and a lot of emotions. Seeing that there are people that sitll loving it like I do makes me happy. I love the story and, of course, I am hyped with the mystery you have mentioned, I spend lots of hours thinking about theories. And a think I want to mention is that last chapter was around 17 pages and it was two months after the previous one. I am wondering if Hoshino-sensei is going to release a chapter every two moths. I hope so 'cause I love the story, and Road. Please, recommend this story so much, Hoshino-sensei deserves it.

I feel like that might be for the best though because Hoshino said that his story would be tragic. He probably won't be the same Lavi we knew if he returned, because he was tortured for so long, and it is also possible that Bookman died and that he became the new Bookman. I bed Hoshino is just keeping him away for now, because it isn't quite time for him to appear yet. Maybe he'll appear after the flashback arc or closer to the end of the series. He's the only one out of the main 4 without an arc after all, so I doubt we have seen the last of him.

I hope when the manga was finished they will finally adapt the remaining arcs in the anime and I hope they'll bring back the dark and gloomy gothic art style of the anime and take their time on the animation so the fight scenes will look comparable to the first anime series that consist of over 103 episodes or probably much better animated fight scenes considering the huge progress of Japan's animated technology.

Every character ( evil ones included ) was unique in my eyes and so complete. And all the music is just genius. I even named myself after the main protagonist, Allen :)

Something is telling me, you're the only one that could bring justice to Fumetsu no Anata e/To Your Eternity... (my only 10/10 along with Berserk and D.Gray-Man, and it managed to make me cry, I mean without any music, I swear it is amazing and I think you would like it too, don't know in which team you are, but it gives me FMA 2003 vibes, a melancholic journey with fantasy elements, and philosophical problematics... An anime is coming next spring (supposed to come out this fall, but delayed) , but you should get interested starting with the 1st chapter, and then amazed with the end of volume 4. It's written and drawn by the author of A Silent Voice if you ask me, but I'm not biased since I haven't read the manga, nor watch the film. (but she's done the manga adaptation of Mardock Scramble, adapted from the novel of the same name, I have seen the movies and they were great too) I mean, I already know she's a special kind of mangaka.

Omg, I just want to thank you for this video. I watched years ago your previous video about "what happened to D.Gray-Man ?" and I was already stuck by each word you were telling. Here is my opinion. D.Gray-Man is bar far my favorite manga and anime, toe to toe with bleach. D.Gray Man has first one of the most astonishing character design in this industry. Hoshino is doing such a good job, besides all the bad health condition she had, she still tries her best to deliver a wonderful work. As she takes the time she needs for each release, I am never disappointed even when a chapter has 15 pages because I am just daydreaming on these drawings and these dialogues. Each frame, each page are full of deep messages and connections. D.Gray-Man has by far in my opinion the prettiest drawing design and environment and sometimes I compare it to the Clamp Studio Design with the famous Dark Shojo "Chobits". Moreover, the world, the lore and the personality of each character are so unique and well detailed. The fact that through the series, you discover that this is not a classical shōnen where there is a good side and a bad side. You have the choice to choose between them all and personally, I feel more with the Noah's than the Black Order, even though I love Allen, Lenalee or Miranda... The lore from the Noah side is so unique. I fell in love with Road Kamelot, and I am always searching each power of each Noah and their relationship between themselves. This manga can make you cry, laugh, smile and angry at the same time. We are discovering a big world as you said in the "Dark Soul" section, where we need to investigate on each chapter some hints for the following story. That's what makes D.Gray-Man so interesting and keeping its fan base excited. I feel like Hoshino, slowly but surely, is writing and setting new stories and lore to her Manga, she knows what she is doing, and she takes the time for it. I am glad to have the chance to read each month a chapter from her and I will never complain about the rhythm of release. I would rather read a perfect manga novel and watch a full and accurate anime than getting a garbage work made because of time release pressure. This manga is deep and full of secrets, we are discovering more and more each chapter and I see new fans coming and starting the D.Gray-Man serie, which make me so happy. D.Gray-Man, is a mix of Bleach, Full-Metal alchemist, soul eater and Re:creators. It's a huge artwork keeping its race and I can actually state that even the second season was so worth to watch. The relationship between Alma and Kanda made me so freaking sad and emotional. Thank you so much for your review, I will play Lala song for you, then Road song

D. Gray man was the 2nd anime I was introduced to when I first started anime back in 2015. One of the strongest emotions I can remember was crying for a week after episode 5. After that I continued to watch it and fell in love with not only the main cast of characters but the style, the story, the villians, the mystery, and everything about it. To this day, when I smell the autumn air I am only reminded of D. Gray Man. The characters bring so much comfort to my being and the memories of watching it for the first time are so fun to look back on. The story of it is also so fascinating to me. I love theorizing and I and, due to the mysterious nature of D. Gray Man, I have spent years trying to completely decipher every mystery in D. Gray Man. (I have a book with notes ^^') The characters are also amazing! I have reached a point in which I don't know who I want to root for in the story. The villians are fun and their interactions with Allen and his friends can be so casual and lighthearted sometimes that it's hard to think that they're the pinnacle of evil. Both sides act like a family to their respective cohorts and I don't want to see them ripped apart. Plus, with independent characters being made and introduced that have no clear loyalty to either side of this "war", to Allen, or even to Nea, the more difficult it becomes to figure out which character is worthy of succeeding in thier goals and which character is not. I find this show and manga so incredibly interesting and I am very happy to see other people who enjoy it as well.😁

I smiled all through out the video. Your voice coupled with the beautiful music from D Gray Man is really relaxing. D Gray Man is one of my all time favourite anime, I cried and smiled at the same scenes that I watched the first time again at the second, the third and so on. I would never get tired watching this anime, I love it in all its entirety. I love our protagonist, his friends, the Antagonists and the Villain's that you love so much, that you would wish there are the good guys. Another thing that I love is that the 'Gray' in D Gray Man is literally what this series shows us, there is no good and bad, the world is gray. There is no organisation that is fighting for good without doing evil to achieve the good, without a 'necessary evil'. There are no bad guys, that are only evil, but have a family they love and an everyday life that they life and that they too suffer in those fights to achieve their goal. There is no protagonist who unnaturally and far too fast overcomes a trauma or loss, that has no problems thanks to the power of friendship or because their fight for justice is more important, but still struggle, have real struggles and problems that may never lessen. People who face problems, in areal hard way to overcome themselves and get stronger, it just feels relateble and real, far more real than most other anime or series. It shows that justice is not something simple and for everyone the same, that its more complex and with the art and music just fitting so good to it, makes it just the more complete and incredibly beautiful. I heard a quote once and I feel like it somehow fits right now(don't know why): The Clown- Knowing that he can't fight against fate and change it, is he still going forward and hiding all his suffering and pain behind a mask of paint and a smile. All my love to D Gray Man and it's creator, for may it be still as beautiful as it is till the end. ❤️ (Sorry if my English is bad and for the long text, but I felt like I needed to convey my emotions)
