Askellad trained Thorfinn. When he was a kid, he could have killed Thorfinn, but he didn't. He showed Throfinn how to keep up with the cruel world that they were in. He taught him how to protect himself. Askellad experienced what it felt like to be in Thorfinns situation when he was a kid. Askellad lost her mother, just as Thorfinn lost his father. And in a way, Askellad could see himself within Thorfinn, they were both warriors, and that's all they will ever be. Askellad, as a warrior, was battling against the Danes and the Welsh, both literally and figuratively. Thorfinn, on the other hand, was also in battle, a battle for his revenge. But in end, he later realized that it was a battle AGAINST his revenge. In the end, it was a battle to end his battle. A battle for his paradise, and his freedom. And Askellad helped show him that. Askellad, in my opinion, was a father figure to Thorfinn in more ways than one.

Askeladd actually recognized he lost to Thors and said he was a magnificent man and warrior, he definetly felt sorry for his death because it was nothing personal, just a job. For me, in that scene in which Thorfinn grabs a sword while Askeladd is apparently sleeping it was the moment in wich I realized that he really felt sorry and he would let Thorfinn kill him.

That only a man who suffered injuries from war know how cruel war is . But for that Thorfinn had to learn it . By killing hundreds of people. In the end he learnt his lesson on dead bodies of people. His father told him a real warrior a real warrior doesn't need a sword but to know that he has to test it throughout manga . But at last he knew his father was right . This also tells us his father was also advised by someone . But he also struggled his whole life which means a true warrior is someone who has wielded sword once but knows that it can only bring destruction . And he also failed to teach Thorfinn until his death .

@@ianpaulcana3088 The farming arc portrays what happens to a man when he lost his purpose of living. Thorfinn's purpose in life was to kill Askeladd, when his goal was snatched all that is left is an empty husk of a human shell. But throughout the farming arc he learns the meaning behind his father's words and has finally found a purpose in life, to find Vinland and build a country of peace. This is deep character and story writing, the development of Thorfinn's character is amazing and one of the best even. Do not be mistaken, the seinen genre is much more than gore, violence, and sexual acts. It portrays mature and complex writing, it portrays the philosophies and what it means to live. If you think Vinland Saga, a seinen manga, is full of action then you have made a mistake. If you wanted fight and action scenes go to Shounen instead, but it will not have the same level of character writing as Seinen.

My favorite thing about this show is the themes of religion and how it seems to compare norse mythology with christianity and also shows how much christianity has changed and not changed over the centuries. I also love how the characters religion seem to be the main drive of a fair amount of the characters, the only characters I would say aren’t driven by their religion is Thorfinn who just wants vengeance. Prince Canute for examples driven by his christianity either in accordance with god or more prominently in defiance of god, another example is Askeladd who is driven by the story his mother told him of a great warrior that would return and how maybe even because of his middle name he believes that he will at least try to be the warrior his mother was desperately waiting for.

There is so much about this show that resonates with me on some deep level, it's very hard to describe it in words. I really enjoyed over-the-top fight scenes, but with each episode, I felt more and more sorry about basically everyone in the story. Such a tough life in a very cruel world. Even Askeladd, an absolute beast and cold-hearted bastard, I felt so sorry for him. Really looking forward to seeing how Thorfinn learns the lesson his father gave him.

Personally I wasn't a fan of Thorfinn after a bit (he grew back to me at the end), but what I loved, was the side characters, the realism, the sadness and horrors of the raiding of villages. In most shows its like "oh haha they killed a village who cares". in this they just struck you in the heart that these are people with lives, love, family, and beliefs. Thats what is truly special about it to me.

When I read the manga years ago I thought to myself, This is too good to ever be adapted in to an anime... I was wrong. They did an amazing job... Now I hope they will someday animate Vagabond correctly. And maybe in the year 2283 we will get a good adaptation of Berserk.

@@zenbrown7144 The difference is that Kingdom would be adapted from chapter 1 all the way to chapter 600, if it's a good adaptation that means at most 3 chapters per episode meaning we would have around 200 episodes of content already.

It bothered me the entire anime that Thorfin never ONCE asked or got any details on why Askeladd killed his dad. He knew we was a mercenary, so surly at some point the thought of it being a job must have come up. I get he will still hate the guy who did the killing but it would have changed the dynamic to something that would have been deeper and more natural.

Wow ignorance is quite bliss. Makoto Yukimura holds a title which not many manga author has. Which is having both his long form serializations adapted by a prominent animation studio and have both be broadcasted on national broadcasting station, and this fucking channel is mandatorly charged if you have a flippin tv in Japan.
@tasogarerubica

@Afonso Almada Seems like the OC has no idea of what the author already has under his belt. You rarely get a genuine talent like Yukimura, and he's still got his youth to pump out several more long form serialization. Seeing his track record, guessing it'll end up being adapted too.
