wut. no. DA2 had the best Qunari lore. Sten was just a gimmicky arrogant zealot character. Arishak and Tallis fully realized Qunari as a full-fledge society. Ironbull went back to alpha-male gimmick. Veilguard is nothing but a fervent dream in Isabella's mind after a long night.

@@alexfrank5331 Sten was only an introduction to qunari as part of world building. Yeah, i think so too, DA2 had the best Qunari lore so far. @@alexfrank5331 DA2 and beyond crapped all over the qunari lore that was established in Origins, so much so that Sten got turned into an unreliable narrator of his own culture. To be honest, banter was quite genius in not only DAO (and Awakening), but also in DA2 and DAI. The banter between Carver and Anders, Carver and Merrill and Carver and Isabela was just chefs kiss, how he treated everyone differently. How Isabela was constantly teasingly mocking him, how Carver had a crush on Merrill while he despised Anders. And not cause Anders was a mage (and yes Anders accused Carver of that, too), but and I quote: "he wouldn't shut up about it". And speaking of Anders in DA2, how his downfall WAS foreshadowed in his banter with other party members, Varric in particular, over the 3 acts. A lot of people gloss over DA2 as a bad game but it imho truly had some genius writing injected in it. What was bad and I agree were the same maps over and over again, with tactically blocked passages, but the exact same layout... And then comes DAI, which has had some really genius banter writing, too! The best example is the chess game between Solas and Iron Bull, heck it mirrors the Immortal Game of 1851, yes the writers injected a real life tournament into DAI, made the banter super in character for both characters and they went with it. Like Iron Bull changes the name of the Queen to the Arishok, how Solas in the end sacrifices most of his pieces to win, which is freaking scary cause that also portrays how he's willing to sacrifice anything and anyone to reach his goal, how he sacrifices Flemeth (and possibly Lavellan's love) just to... appear in the Veilguard and get his ritual interrupted by stupid scaffolding... Like, where is THAT character writing we had for him in DAI and Trespasser? Why is he no longer as clever as he used to be? Also, where the hell is his petrifying gaze? Why he only remembers to use it in the very end of Veilguard if you get the "bad" ending? He could've used it on Rook when Varric was distracting him, boom, game over...

The different banter between companions kept me starting new playthroughs, my most recent memories were in DAI, wanting to hear the humor between Iron Bull and Sera, hearing Sera shut Solas down about discussing elves, having Vivienne Cole and Solas together was interesting. There were deep exchanges, thoughtful exchanges, flat out hilarious ones too. I think it was you Goose that mentioned there was no humor in Veilguard. I cant think of a single line that actually made me chuckle. One of my favorites is between Iron Bull and Sera when he wants her to hop on his back and he throws her... think of the mayhem sera... the mayhem.. lmaooo.. aw crap guess I'm doing another DAI playthrough now. Wish they would remaster Origins and 2 so I can play on console

I thought for sure they would be clever and come up with pendants or something to ward off that petrification ability of Solas’s, but instead they just dumbed him down. I suppose in his defense, Solas was using all his energy on the ritual and couldn’t spare a Medusa stare for Rook.

I really enjoyed this video, I've been replaying DAO for the last few days and I think everything you unpacked in these examples of companion banter really reflect how great the storytelling is in DAO. it feels so easy to engage with the world and feel like you have the freedom to determine your own moral stance within such a setting. I feel like the more time passes and the more DAO I play, the more my opinion of Veilguard sours. As highlighted in the example where Morrigan highlights how the elves are on a leash, as you said, there is not a clear morally correct answer to whether power (particularly magic) should be controlled/regulated or if it should be freely developed and encouraged despite the risks of corruption. There are clear nuances and consequences (both positive and negative) for either stance. This theme/ideological topic is engaging and us as players could leave a mark on the world of Thedas by leaning towards either side via crucial decisions in Origins (Circie of Magi quest), the end of DA2 and in Inquisition. In Inquisition, the Elven groups were inferred to be understandably tired of this "leash", which is why there was a progression towards the elves supposedly gathering under Solas. This theme of slavery, power/corruption & the racial context of how this theme has impacted the way in which elves have been treated by humans would have been so interesting to unpack in Tervinter. But somehow, this Elven army under Solas was erased from the game after all that handcrafted world-building and storytelling of such themes. Every game, the elves appear to get done dirty and us as the player could always choose to their do them dirty even more, or provide support, but in the grand scheme of things the oppression of elves was always there to stay, as the lore/storytelling suggests they have been done dirty for centuries. It feels like the original intention for Veilguard was for this racial/cultural tension between elves and humans to culminate in the elves banding together as an army under Solas, leaving the player to make difficult choices in interacting with and fighting against this army; an army that is may be justified in their extreme stance following such racial torment for so long. I would have loved to see companions that are Elven/Human/Mage/Templar to react under such context and challenge/fight the player depending on choices made (just as it was in Origins) and clash with each other just as Wynne and Morrigan have in this video. The consequence of erasing this entire theme and Elven army from Veilguard hurts. There is some released concept art for Veilguard and its clear this Elven army under Solas and this theme of servitude/slavery within the culture of Tervinter was supposed to be central to the game and it's narrative, which is probably why it was originally called "Dragon Age Dreadwolf". Veilguard's concept art from 2014 has been released this month by Veilguard's current art director, and It's interesting to see that even through concept art, you can tell how there was a drastic change in the approach & quality of writing in Veilguard's development. It's clear that nuanced/morally grey themes were supposed to be at the forefront of Veilguards story, which way more choices from DAO/DA2/DAI having a drastic ripple effect on the game and the world of Thedas. But previous choices and several core nuanced themes/ideologies have either been erased or simplified and it is really jarring that this has happened when you look at how DAO approached and introduced such themes and choices. Although this new direction hurts bad, I've come to appreciate DAO a lot more.

Writing literature in a non-native language is definitely a challenge. But it's also an entirely doable challenge. And with your outsider perspective, you might even notice some things other people do not in terms of language. You'll certainly have better training on the grammar. :) Embrace your strengths. As for Dragon Age, I agree with you, I'll just add in things you might have missed or just decided not to specify. Allistair and Leiliana 1) We learn Allistair cooked last night. This kind of throws back to his earlier conversation with Morrigan when she joined the party and there was talk if she would basically be the group cook. Based on this, she is not and we are forced to endure Allistair's cooking. 2) Allistair knows his cooking is bad. Yes, he stands up for local culture and kind of describes local cuisine. But he's also admitting HE doesn't know what to do beyond grabbing various bits and pieces and throwing them all in a pot. And he KNOWS it isn't good. He's as critical of himself as he is of anyone, perhaps especially himself. And he knows Leilianna is trying to complain or register concern about the food, even if she's too nice to be direct. 3) It builds on the character contrast between Leilianna and Morrigan. Which is actually critical, since for straight men (who would have been the assumed majority purchasers when the game was created, even if we know that there was actually a 50/50 gender split (no clue on sexuality) in the end) Leilianna and Morrigan are the two romance options, and you don't want to serve up two girls who are exactly the same except for hair color. So building contrasts between the two women are game critical. It makes for better companions, but it especially makes for better romances. Allistair and Zevran 1) The other two it would be critical to contrast are Alistair and Zevran because of their positions as the straight female romance options. So we have the honorable knight and the roguish assassin. The protector and the threat. 2) Allistair continues to have low self-esteem. That's a thread we discover beginning when he puts us in charge instead of taking charge himself. We saw it above. We see it again here. 3) We get foreshadowing of Zevran's potential turn. Why is he here? Maybe he's been here all along to spy on us. His social skills are better than his fighting skills. Morrigain and Wynn The only thing I'd add here is that Morrigan ALSO uses history. With the way both arguments are presented, you can take either side, or you can also stand back and say there IS no good side. Something needs to be done (or you get abominations and demons all over the place, untrained children killing people accidentally, etc), but locking people in concentration camps because of what they might do, is that really the best plan? One of the biggest disappointments with Veilguard is that Tevinter was an opportunity to show what happens when mages are on top. When they're free and have no restrictions. You show the slavery and blood magic. You also show the power for good that mages have for contrast. You show the corruption of a mage bureaucracy but also maybe show the corruption of a normal bureaucracy. Are the mages really worse or are they just people? As a location, stories in Tevinter have a lot going for them. And that just didn't happen. A KZbinr pointed out that they'd only seen 1 slave in the entire story. Maybe there is no good answer to the problem of mages.

A lil late, but theres banter in DAO, DA2, and DAI that live in my head rent free because they both revealed a lot about the characters but also made me think about my own philosophy. My personal favorite is between Isabela and Anders in DA2 about justice. - Anders chastizes Isabela about stealing the relic - Isabela shoots back saying that it was 3 years ago and that she has moved on - Anders replies that Kirkwall has only now recovered from the incident with the qunari - Isabela says (roughly) "what do you want me to do? Flog myself every day? Have you ever thought about how justice doesn't exist, save for that voice in your head?" And the follow up where Anders insists that there is justice in the world, and Isabela says that justice is like a bar fight. Someone throws a punch then suddenly everyone is involved and no one really knows how it all started. "Justice is an ideal. It exists in an ideal world, but not this one." It shows where Isabela and Anders' beliefs lie, but considering that this banter comes when Isabela comes back to return the relic, it's tells us a lot about how Isabela handles her own mistakes. She does a lot to pretend like shes completely selfish, but she does care without holding herself to the impossible standard she accuses Anders of having.

I beat Veilguard just in time to catch this video! 😁 The game was too neat. Too *sanitized* . Too *safe* . (I spit up what I was drinking when I heard your comment on people who are always happy!) The writing was a severe letdown. My big question? John Epler wrote two stories in Tevinter Nights. One of them, The Horror of Hormak, was one of my favorite stories in the book. Patrick Weekes has been involved in BioWare since Mass Effect, had significant contributions to DA:I, and wrote The Masked Empire, which I enjoyed as well. Both of these gentlemen have talent, I’ve seen it with my own eyes! So why was the party banter, main narrative and 90%< of the entire writing so subpar? Until I saw this video I couldn’t be sure that I wasn’t looking at the past through rose-colored lenses. Now I know I’m not. In quality contrast alone, comparing Veilguard’s writing to DA:O, DAII, and DA:I is like feeding raw chicken to an alligator! The writing quality of the three prior games shreds Veilguard. Why is that?

Ikr? 😂 It kills me to say that but I think it's censorship as I mentioned in my DAV review. They had to obey to save their job because of the decisions made by others. It's so sad really. The whole situation is ridiculous and makes me want to replay old games like DAO or Skyrim where we had zero politics. Idk, I'm pretty drained after the Veilguard, and Awoved art director did a bunch of weird stuff as well... After the Veilguard's lesson, I don't want to try Awoved anymore. Can you believe it? Making politically neutral videogames is now time consuming, risky, AND expensive. I want to finish my work day and enjoy the story. Do I need to become a game dev now? I want my own Dragon Age if I didn't get a proper one with the Veilguard 🤣 Sorry for the rant. I feel your frustration. We are in the same boat.

I’m also replaying the Castlevania series for the millionth time (don’t judge me! 😂) Have you ever played the Persona series, Mila? (Hope I’m not being too personal!) There is little by way of choice and consequence like other RPGs, but the games are fun. Especially if you like mythology in general. The games take on some really deep questions, as well. While I played Persona 5, I felt like the devs were asking me which was more important: peace and security for everyone, or personal freedoms and liberties? If you haven’t played Persona, especially Persona 5, I highly recommend it!

I feel like they couldn’t commit in Veilguard to making any decision that might make the player dislike a character, but that meant that i was less invested and the conversations weren’t actually that important or interesting. It’s important for characters to have flaws and/or very different viewpoints. Characters in origins make me feel things and think about them. I also liked how they allowed the player to draw their own conclusions in origins. It was real role-playing. Everything was so complex.

Nice and consistent review as usual. As I said before I'll now give a brief review of veilguard after playing on Nightmare. -Combat wise the game is fun but as you said, despite the amplitude of builds possible most players will stick to a style they grow accostumed with and in my case a multitude of area spells of different elements held me off against most crowds despite slugging down against bosses. -Companion wise: I found Davrin to be the most lacklustre because other than his tough guy who left his people for adventure his character arc isn't actually his but Assan's, the latter is a great character which I felt bad sacrificing. I found Harding's backgroung unfit for her character arc, she is a Ferelden surface dwarf with little connection to traditional dwarven history and they pushed that whole titan plot on a popular character rather than writing one were such important lore was personally meaningful. I liked Taash personally and specially in regards to her firebreathing and cultural decisions, what I didn't like is how the game does not showcase non-binary oppression as an issue, I mean, Dorian's family almost killed him with blood magic just so he would turn straight and continue their genetic legacy while Venatori and Antaam don't even bat an eyelash on NB characters who align with them. The worst we got was Taash's mother confused about her decision and while that felt real in writing terms it was nowhere near as impactful. I found Neve to be cool, calm and colected and my only complaint about her is that her investigations have too much exposition to guide the player rather than showing us her clues. I found Lucanis nice and brooding at the same time which is fine but his self control regarding his traitorous cousin and the lack of seriousness regarding Spite makes his character less appealing. I liked Bellara a lot despite her having cringe moments, I am into the disney pricess sort of character and she came of to me as a discount Tali which by this game's writing standards is a win. I think Emmrich is the best written character in the game because of how nuanced he exposes himself and shows emotion, I also liked Manfred a lot and really felt bad for choosing Emmrich's lich path which shows that the writing there was impactful. -Villain wise both Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nan are very threatening but they both get the idiot ball to justify their defeats, my opinion is that there was no reason for them not to bullrush Rook and take his dagger as soon as they crossed paths and especially while they still had their Archdemons. Given how the south of thedas was easily overrun by their secondary forces, my belief is that Rook should have had too run from them at every corner until seeing a chance to strike. Solas remains interesting but the focus on him only gets important at the end of the game unfortunately. -Lore wise we get many answers though not all of them are pleasing, I disagree with your view that Wardens shouldn't have weird lifespans augmented by the blight because Avernus and Larius already showed that it's possible to survive your calling with blood magic or severe degeneration, other than that I liked how the Elves came to be but I didn't like how the titans became the blight and how Solas was the do it all guy for Mythal and the Evanuris. Overall my score for Veilguard is a solid 7 in analitical terms while my inner dragon age fan would give it a 5.5 like you did because the writing made me cringe some 10 times and I did not get to wield blood magic after waiting 10 years for it. The game was worth purchasing and playing but I don't find much reason to go back to it other than testing some other builds on the arena at a lower difficult.

"Not to die" sounds like a plan. Will i stick to it? Mayhaps. Also hi Sunny Goose, nice to have you back Funny thing that i've realized while listening: there are banters like that in DAV that don't overexplain things and share personalities of each individual character (which the game struggles with on the regular basis tbf), I've heard like 1 or 2 of them so far (and i'm really slow with the game rn), which isn't much, but weird how it happened more than once. At this point, it's closer to be a miscalculation error from Bioware, but oh well. Sidenote: i know that you've said that DAV haven't inspired you to create more content about it, but maybe there's a point in making a video on things you been right/wrong about in your pre-release videos? Kind of a retrospective on things you thought about the game at the time: elven gods theories and descriptions which DAV might've proven right or wrong, how character designs told their stories, things like that. Pre-release DAV speculations and theories are a heavy chunk of the channel identity after all.

They just lost so many tallented writers... it's sad. I absolutely adore DAO and even the lift banter in the origial Mass Effect is better than hours of Veilguard's drivel. Also, where can you buy your books? :)

Sadly, I agree with you I hope the old writers will find a better studio for their talents. You are very sweet, thanks for your interest! You can find Rize Keer on Amazon

The name of your book, please. At least, I want to try the first of the series 😊 English is not my mother language too, so I completely understand what you mean.

Great video. Yes it can be improved. But this is very important topic within this section of gaming. The writing is the main issue with Veilguard, and the tonality, imo. Does not feel like Dragon Age. Sounds like a marvel-movie. Even the wokeness I could've ignored (even protested if they had a silent protagonist no dialogue wheel and some balls; but no I do no want that stuff in games). But the fact that it's just not the same world anymore, that it has turned from something grity and realistic to hollywood slop. To me Veilguard is like a bad game for kids, I can't understand why an adult would want to play it. And I can't understand why an adult would want their child to play it either. The biggest issue with the Banter is Origins is how you often need to stop in your tracks in order to hear the full spontaneous banter because any new dialogue that appears will simply cut it out.

DAO was the best, and it all went downhill from there

The banter in VG was so… useless and random. There were a few interesting ones but most of them had me tuning them out with how uninteresting the topics were.

you are probably the kind of person that reads the first page of Homer's Odyssey and said I can do better.
