Realistically speaking, a very heavy propeller (steel, perhaps, since weight isn't even remotely as big of a concern here as on aircraft) could be a very effective flywheel to preserve energy whilst breaking. Just stop the throttle, and hold on breaks applied to the wheels and it should still be spinning reasonably fast. Also, accelerating the engine with the break on wouldn't really be all that damaging here either. Genuinely does have some interesting benefits beyond the memes and what is shown here.
@djdewwott8540 Жыл бұрын
Some of the problems I could see it having is breaking could be tough due to having to slow down the propeller and the wheels most likely, though that’s a lesser problem in comparison to the gusts of air one of those would output. Larger cars would be almost entirely impractical, and even with smaller models the wind they would produce would mess with pedestrians and other propeller cars alike.
@charlesfawcett4178 Жыл бұрын
@@djdewwott8540 Both of you are taking this so seriously and are so dumb
@jorge859611 ай бұрын
A variable pitch propeller would take care of all of this in a much simpler way, if you reduce the blade angle the propeller will start windmilling, basically working as a giant airbrake, this is how you would use engine braking in a car like this. If you need even more braking just keep changing the blade angle and rev up the engine to get reverse thrust. This are things that airplanes do to slow down in the air and when landing respectively
@jorge859611 ай бұрын
@@djdewwott8540even a small 100hp general aviation plane on idle throws quite lot of wind backwards, a more powerful engine working hard would easily throw a person to the ground, Newton's 3rd law, you have to move a lot of air very fast if you want to accelerate a 1000+kg car. Also there is the problem that it may not be a great idea to have giant blades spinning at 1000rpm anywhere near pedestrians
@squidwardo70748 ай бұрын
You could also have "regenerative" breaking by spinning the propeller (the opposite direction) juts like on an electric car. Except that doesn't put gas back in your tank lol

Your propeller has to slow all the way down to 0RPM, and then speed back up to movement speed. Not to mention the danger of having an open propeller. All the vehicle accidents? Even more damage done with propellers. Probably some of the reasons why it never caught on, it just wasn't practical. Powered wheels (so far) are the most efficient solution for our purposes.

Few issues I saw with propeller car: - no clutch for propeller - in case when it's needed to be turned off, it won't work (can be solved with basic transmittion) - limited traction while turning (can be solved with back-wheel steering, spherical tyres or propeller with turning mechanism) - massive winds in cities - too much negative momenthum on Y axis (if a car gets stopped from front, it will tip over) - large fuel consumption - propeller is wide and prone to damage - lack of cargo space in this design But it would be great for e.g. sports car. Imagine some compensator reving the equivalent of a biplane outside your house at 3 in the morning 2. Safety. A large, fast moving propeller is going to hurt or kill people when out in the open 3. Wind. The third time you get your groceries blown out of your hands by one of these passing by is when you decide to commit homicide 4. Steering. The single propeller, as Muye's multiple jump cuts have shown, does nothing for steering, which still relies on the wheels. You know, the whole thing the propeller is meant to be a fix for

Just wait until Muye discovers propeller torque and its effects. Especially at low speeds, increasing throttle will cause the car to both turn and roll left; you may also experience asymmetrical thrust. Using a constant-speed (it adjusts its angle in order to keep engine RPM stable, almost like a CVT) contra-rotating (basically 2 propellers in front of each other spinning in different directions) propeller would solve or at least reduce the issues I mentioned, as well as allow you to stay in the powerband permanently without the reliability issues at higher power outputs that a CVT can have - back in WW2, constant speed props could harness the power of 1000, 2000, 3000hp engines even. If anyone is wondering about the efficacy of propeller driven cars then in short it would have tons of problems, they do exist and most consist of go-cart-esque vehicles and are fun, but that is for a few reasons: 1 they are meant to be driven in environments without other vehicles, its a massive safety hazard. 2 they don't restrict airflow, a vehicle like this with a push prop would be operating in a disturbed air flow environment, it is why you don't see lots of push prop planes, they're very loud and cause lots of vibration, and because it is operating in the "dirty air" of a car, the air is not smooth, think of a semi truck passing by you, lots of disturbed air that would make the prop inefficient and shake violently. 3 Quickly reversing an engine to perform breaking is not possible at moderate or high speeds. the engine has to slow, stop, and reverse, which is a slow process, imagine using having to brake, stop and reverse your car to a high rev to start reversing, yes, it doesn't care about terrain, but also not about time, because it's slow... so... yeah, that pedestrian is hienz ketchup in your window. Props stay in the Air, or on water in the case of fan boats, not on cars

but tbh braking would still be the same and you could equally spin out when braking on wet road. +would be better if the propeller was in the front so you would have better traction of front wheels (cuz its pulling instead of pushing the car) edit: i saw your method of braking but that's really not a good idea since it would take a huggge while to change the direction of the propeller while its going at 10k rpm

the intro is so unnecessarily scientific, and I love it.

Interesting, might actually be interesting to see a Super car that can use the wind to it's advantage and maybe even beat top speed records by using an engine and propellers.

We need fuel efficiency data, also anyone near this thing would get blown over. Not sure if you been on a prop boat but those fans aren't like this video game... they're extremely loud and powerful. Other vehicles and pedestrians would be in an immense amount of danger around this thing.

At 11:30 fuel consumption is shown and as expected the propeller pigeon uses a lot more fuel

you have to remember. It’s still a engine, body, and wheels
