I don't think you realise what is being shown in those pictures. The 50s and 60s in the USA were its most prosperous years. The USA had won a war, the country was awash with money it made from selling weaponry, warships and supplies to the allies in Europe (this is not a criticism). This prosperity benefited nearly the entire population: with one job per household, one could buy a house, a car and a TV. Heaven. People had basic needs and were happy with simple pleasures. You're seeing the illustration, in idealised form admittedly, of the American Dream. This is what drew millions of people to its shores. And it was a land of huge opportunities. Millions came and prospered. It wasn't perfect (racism, old attitudes to sex and women) but it was damn close to perfect. The USA may have improved on the racism and sexism since then but then economic inequality has exploded. I wouldn't mind having been alive in the USA back then.
